OVER two hundred and ninety students are in attendance at Wabash College this term—a large increase over former terms.

MR. J. W. PLATT, M. C., will please accept our heartfelt thanks for "A scrap of history"—history that was never written, however.

WE weep over the proposed early demise of Blantou Duncan's True Democrat. "Short-lived and full o' trouble," should adorn its tomb.

PAUL STUOBACU addressed a meager mass meeting at the Wigwam, Saturday night. Paul spoke in German, and we presume he did it. well we don't know.

THE musquito nuisance is becoming already intolerable, and nervous people who have never before prayed in their lives, pray for the advent of cool weather.

Municipal Court.

The Municipal Court record shows the following cases since Saturday—a number of wards yet to hear from

William Allen, associating, $8.10. Wm. Donnaldson, associating, $8.10. James Allen, D. D-, 7.25. Geo. Williamson, D. D., discharged. James Wright, D. D., $7.15. Herb. J. Graff, associating, $8.10. A Morrison, D. D., 11.20. John Solomon, associating, $8.10. Frank McMorris, associating, $8.10. [AJmarginal note informs us that Mc. is a good man, this being his first offense. This is sad.—CITY ED.]

James Reish, associating, $S.10. Louis Link, associating, $8.10. George Smith, fast driving, $8.75. Kent Read, associating, $8.10. Edward Cronon, D. D., $8.10. Jos. Davis, D. D., $9. Lidia Hostetten, inmate of house of ill-fame, $8.10.

Mary Pentecost, inmate of house of ill-fame, $8.10. John Burton, fighting Elizabeth Colescott, $20.45.

A number of complaints against females of easy virtue were continued until Friday a number of other cases will be adjudicated this afternoon and evening, including a dozen cases against keepers and victims of a monster tiger.

The duty thai devolves upon us of publishing the names, coupled with the offenses named in each respective case, is a painful one but it is also one we owe to the public. Men are ever palming themselves off on society as worthy the circle in which they move, when in reality their characters in secret are blackened by acts against the law, municipal and moral, which should exclude them from the society of all decent people. We are saddened when we contemplate the grief of a sister or a mother at the misdeeds of a brotheror son, when made public property through the powerful medium of the press. But these facts, painful as they are, should be known, that society be protected. The general good is more the aim of the GAZETTE, than its object to shield the guilty, to assuage the grief of the innocent relatives and friends of the oflender.

WE are indebted to the Springfield licy'tnlcr for the following startling information

Maj. J. W. Rice, of this city, was married in Bloomington last evening. Up to the hour of going to press no particulars have reached us.

Had the hour of going to press been precipitated on the one hand and delayed on the other, the public would have been spared an agonizing suspense of six hours—for the particulars.

Meanwhile we will join in with many others in wishing our friend and schoolmate of former years, and his bridef whoever she may be, all the bliss incident to

to Indianap- £]ie holy relations they have assumed. We hope that their path through life may be lighted up by-the sun of love, and that its beautiful .brilliancy may never be shadowed by^the clouds of discontent.

"llieJI^ger, the Tiger."

Samuel W. McDonald has been keeping a flery untamed tiger down town for sometime. Saturday night, however, officers of the red-eyed law came

DICK YATES" was lying at the poio't down upon the exaggerated feline like

the wolf on the fold, capturing the vor cious beast-keeper,aud twelve human beings who were soon to have been offered up as victims to the never-satiated appetite of the glutlinous animal. In the Municipal Court, this afternoon, some time, this matter will undergo a legal investigation, when liabilities of keeper and voluntary victims will be determined.

THE RIGHT REVEREND SPRUILLE BURFORD delivered his farewell sermon at St. Stephens' Church to a large congregation,'yesterday supplementing the sermon, which was worthy the occasion aud the man, with a few feeling remarks to his parish, explanatory of his motives in resigning.

At the close of the service, however, Mr. Burford stated that, provided he could get leave of absence from his parish in Louisiana, aud permission from the Bishop of the Diocese of that State, he would officiate as rector of St. Stephens until his successor could be secured, if such an event could be attained at an early date.

IN speaking of the Indianapolis sideshow of Mr. Grant, the Cincinnati Enquirer says

They have shown their animus in a most striking manner, and we all know where to class them.

And long ere that convention wae called, we all knew the motives that abided in the hearts of those who figured for if. Anything to defeat Greeley aud elect Grant, has been their watchword. Whether success is the condition of their compensation we know not but we feel assured that there is compensation in view.

IT'S very sad, but said to be true, that Springfield, Ills., is afflicted with profes sional funeral goers of the feminine gender, of the ripe age of 25 and upwards, who go to all the "perfectly splendid" funerals, in order to satisfy their curiosity and get a free ride home—crowding the friends of deceased out of their own carriages. These feminiues were gently remanded by a "nasty, mean man," who carded them through the State Register, that they should not "crowd the mourners

AND now, the nine hundred aud nine-ty-ninth Xathau murderer has been discharged by Justice Dowling in the city of New York. We thiuk it high time that the detectives, press and telegraph now give us rest in the premises. A long suffering pqblic will doubtless be willing to exchange places with the murdered man, if these harrassing- speculations are to be continued.

THE marriage of Mr. James Holland, of the firm of Walbridge & Holland, phonographic reporters, St. Louis, to Miss Eliza Sappington was the social event of St. Louis society last week. The couple, have gone East on a bridal tour of several weeks. We don't see how a short-hand man can find time to get married during a political campaign.

OUT of 950 persons examined by the San Francisco attorneys, engaged in the case of the State vs. Laura D. Fair, twelve idiots—men who don't read newspapers—were found. How these twelve idiots are expected to deal out justice intelligently, we are at a loss to determine.

When any kind of merchandise gets so high that the people will not consume the goods, the best way is to do as we [Foster Brothers] have done—put the prices where the people will take them.
