SPECULATORS! SPECULATORS!

SPECULATORS! SPECULATORS! An infamous ring of New York speculators, making the high prices of wool and cotton a pretext for their rascality, formed a combination some weeks since to bolster up and sustain the present high prices of Dry Goods until after the Western merchants had visited New York and laid in their fall stocks. Our New York partners have been watching their movements, and while these speculators have been craming Western^nerchants full of goods under the false statement that "goods must be higher," -we have refused to buy a dollar's worth of goods except in such cases as where our terms have been complied with. The market is now breaking, just as we knew it would, and the result will be that we shall get our fall stock at a very much lower figure than those -who have allowed themselves to be "stuffed" with the notion that goods were going up instead of down. Our customers will not have to pay the high prices that other Western merchants must necessarily charge.

A CORRESPONDENT writes us that he knows of three persons who were paid to carry torches in the Saturday night's procession of Mr. Grant.

THERE has been a great fall of Radical majorities in the ola Liquor Law State. Grant will never receive 28,000 majority in that State again.

MR. GRANT'S Herald likes to deal in sensations. Its latest is that its master (so long as he is President) will sweep the country in the coming election.

THE Chicago Daily News, a very sprightly aud vivacious, though youthfa!, paper, of Chicago, has changed from a morning to an afternoon publication.

"Miss DIMMOCK, residing in the country ne.ir this city, recently lost a canary bird aged IS years—died from old age was the verdict of the ornithological Coroner's jury.

VUTHUK MrKsiCrHT, a very brilliant newspaper correspondent of prominent papers, who has just returned from a trip to the Pacific States, is stopping in the cit v.

IT is said that Robert Bonner, of the New \ork, Ledger, will retire from the immediate supervising management of that mammoth metropolitan paper after the present year.

A FORLORN specimen of human animation solicited aid from the bay-win-dow fronted 'Squire Beauehamp, yesterday. He said he was poor but honest, frugal but unfortunate that his future existence depended on getting out of town and out to Brazil, where the land flows with milk, honey, aud block coal. Beauehamp, very sorry that he had no money, would write him a pass, which he did, in something like the following language: "Conductor: Please pass bearer through the bloody chasm, and charge to Christianity!" The fellow^ raised his eyes heavenward, grasped the 'Squire by the nose, and broke forth in something like the following strain of blessing: "May the good Lord, in his magnanimity, bless you for this act of kindness to a poor but frugal man and departed.

"SHORT-HAND Made Easy," is the attractive title of a new phonographic catch-peuny concern, published by G. S. Dwyer, New York, and sold for "the low price of fifty cents, that it may be placed within reach of all who wish to acquire proficiency in the science."

Advertising short-hand as easy of acquirement does not establish that fact. We can assure all who undertake the art with the expectation of becoming proficient in practice, that they will have a very difficult task to perform, a task which will require a large stock of patience, perseverance, and above all, the peculiar fitness for the practice known as intuition.

AN interesting and enterprising though virtuous family in Vermillion county, have a systemized system of blackmailing the wealthy rural roosters of that county. A man known to have money passes by the house, the wife beckons for him to come in of course, his curiosity leads him in. No sooner does he get into the house than the doors and blinds are closed, the door locked and a thunderous rapping is heard at the door, which is unlocked by the affrighted wife and her husband enters with a ponderous navy revolver in each hand, demanding the heart's blood of the destroyer of his happiness. From $10 to S100 however, usually effects a compromise.

R. G. HERVEY, Managing Director of the Paris & Decatur Railroad, was in our city this morning, and we understand it is his intention not only to resume running their trains through to Terre Haute, commencing on Monday next, but to have two express trains a day each way, arriving here at 10:40 A. M. and 5:00 P. M., and going west leave here at 11:45 A. M. and 5:25 P. M. The train leaving here at 11:45 makes close connection- at Areola with the Illinois Central for Chicago, arriving there at 9 P. M.^ and passengers leaving Chicago at 7:30 A. M. reach Areola at 2:18 P. M., and Terre Haute at 5 P. M. J'-

THOSE distinguished and nationally known statesmen, Piatt and Hays, continue to favor ife with wooden editorials over their franks, written by Government clerks.- The facts and figures arrayed in these voluminous documents, are startling and thrilling in the extreme. Our/waste basket has' bees" edited by these enterprising gentlemen in General Grant's interest for sometime, with singular regularity and wonderful ability. The GAZETTE itself, however, is for Greeley, and in sentiment has no connection with the waste basket.

THE ^rjpyessinnocenlty asserts that etorts are being systematically made to lie down their procession of Saturday night. Such, so far as we are aware, is not the case, though there is a systematic effort to lie it up to over 2,200, when there were but 1,600 torches in line. Not only do the Express apostles of truth lie up their own procession and meeting, but vainly endeavor to lie down those of their opponents. If there is to be any lectures on lying in the Express, we would kindly suggest that they be care fully read and applied in that sanctum.

"POOR OLD JOE" is what they call the late eminent and affable Judge Ledlie, who engineered the Springfield department of Mr. Grant's Louisville side show. The poor old towhead returns to bis home and resumes his former occupation as Surveyor of the county of Sangamon, which position he holds as a charity act from the political friends he recently deserted. As he rambles through the San gamon "bottoms" and through the adja cent woods, in thedischarge of the duties of his position, he can contemplate the loneliuess of his desolation.

The above named candidates are represented as responsible and reliable gentlemen, strong with their constituency.

JOHN SMITH, now, turns up in San Francisco, where he got married, and was charivaried by his bride's school mates. Smith became desperate at the unearthly, nocturnal disturbance, hoisted a window and indicated his willingnecs to surrender, by a free display of a garment of immaculate whiteness. The girls fied in wild afright at sight of this awful apparition, not understanding the display was desigued as a surrender.

THE man of destiny, G. Frank Train, after having been collared and cuffed to outer darkness from the Louisville sideshow of Mr. Grant, has abandoned his Presidential aspirations in supreme disgust, and embarked for Europe. As his stately form, .arrayed in cerulian blue and glittering gold lace, graced the gangplank of the departing ship, he heaped one profound anathema upon Mr, Grant and his sideshow.

THE Hon. A. J. Hunter will address the citizens of Terre Haute, without regard to their political belief, at the Temple, Thursday Evening of this week. Mr. Hunter recently made a very effective canvass of this county but at that time did not address the citizens of Terre Haute only as they went out to the township meetiugs to hear him. He is a pleasing and effective speaker,and should [be wajeofje jwjietfce.

THE case of Messrs. Shannon and Ha vens, vs. the New York Mutual Life In surance Company, is on trial in the C. Court, to-day. The case is one in which plaintiffs sued defendant for violation of contract, and lay damage at $10,000 Messrs. Baird & Cruft, and Allen Mack, for plaintiffs and Messrs. Thomp son, and Davis & Davis, for defendant The Hon. John T. Scott presides.

HAL. DONALDSON, in addition to his arduous duties as agent of the Empire Freight Line, the duties of which posi tion he discharges most faithfully, con templates taking the agency of a patent leather broad guage boot, an article very useful in a Presidential campaign, espe cially if knock down arguments are to be resorted to.
