SPE€rLlTO»S! SPE€lJLATOB§! SPECULATORS!
SPECULATORS! An infamous ring of New York speculators, making the high prices of wool and cotton a pretext for their rascality, formed a combination some weeks since to bolster up and sustain the present high prices of Dry Goods until after the Western merchants had visited New York and laid in their fall stocks. Our New York partners have been watching their movements, and while these speculators have been craming Western merchants full of goods under the false statement that "goods must bo higher," we have refused to buy a dollar's worth of goods except in such cases as where our terms have been complied with. The market is now breaking, just as we knew it would, and the result "will be that we shall get our fall stock at a very much lower figure than those who have allowed themselves to be "stuffed" with the notion that goods were going up instead of down. Our customers will not have to pay the high prices that other Western merchants must necessarily charge.

ANOTHER, Saturday dawns upon us bright and clear.
(Jo AND hear the gentlemen from Illis uois this evening.
GOOD speaking at the Terre Haute Temple this evening.
THE spirit of General Finnell will not march on to this place, as hitherto advertised by the Express.
GEORGE R. W^IDMNO is known throughout Illin^fe as "the rising young orator of the Prairie State,"
THERE area great many people from the rural districts in the city to-day. The great market day of the week.
WE,lee by a special dispatch to the Chioago Tribune, that Mr. Greeley will visit Indianapolis during the campaign.
4 THE President of the Louisville Con- & vention declares the whole thing a farce, and that he will have nothing further to do with it.
OUR city news department was sadly neglected yesterday because of our tira^ and space being occupied with Mr. Hanna's Temple speech.
GEN. HUNTER pensively reclined his head over Postmaster Burnett's table this morning, as he sorrowfully contemplated the certainty of his defeat.
THE gentle Matilda Fletcher, whom Wm. Henry Smith, of the Western Associated Press, would fain suppress, is to speak at Mattoon on the 10th inst.
THE Express ain't as lively as it was on the news from Vermont. It don't exactly like the thunder that comes from the green hills of New England.
THE collapse of the Louisville Grant Convention was a clear case of spontaneous combustion. This because the elements that made it up were combustible.
"PARTISAN POLITICS" is the theme of discussion by the Rev. E. F. Howe, at the Congregational Church to-morrow evening. Mr. Howe certainly never peleeted a more faithful subject.
THE Carbou Coal Company shaft, near Carbon station, on the Indianapolis & St.. Louis ltailroad, burned out yesterday. Spontaneous combustion is presumed to have been the cause of the calamity.
THE colored brethren were out in force evening, making quite a club display. They were commanded from behind the scenes by CJeueral Buruett and Commodore Magill of the Wabash oquadrons.
THE (ireeley Cadets had a pole-raising at the junction of First and Main streets last evening. The Hon. B. W. Hanna delighted the boys with an interesting and thrilling speech of about ten minutes' duration.
CHAS. O'CONOR says he will uot be the candidate of the Bourbons who met at Louisville, and will have nothing further tj) do with the matter, but to favor the movement. He sticks to his. determination to not accept the nomination. The whole movementris a most complete and disgraceful failure. But any? thing to beat Greeley.
Snnday Services.
Regular Sunday services at Centenary, Rev. James W. Greene, pastor. Atthe First Presbyterian Church there will be morning and evening preaching by Rev. Stinison.
The Right Rev. S. Burford will conduct the morning service of the Episcopal Church, at Dowling Hall.
Plymouth Chapel, preaching at 11 o'clock A. M., by Rev. R. O. Post. The evening will be devoted toiSuuday .school services.
At Christian Chapel, Rev. B. B. Tyler will preach to-morrow, at 11 o'clock A. M., on "Conformity to the World," and at 7:30 P. M. on "Eternal Life." All are invited.
Rev. S. M. Stimsou having returned from a short vacation, will preach in the Baptist Church, to-morrow morniag at 11 o'clock, and in the evening at half past 7 o'clock.
Second Presbyterian Church, corner of Ohio and Fifth streets, public worship to-morrow at 11 o'clock. Mark 16:19 subject, "Christ's Exalted Estate in Glory."
Rev. James Hill, pastor, will conduct services, morning and evening, at Asbury Church.
There will be morning and evening preaching at the United Brethren Church, Rev. Parker Milligan pastor.
Services in the Congregational Church, Rev. E. F. Howe, pastor, to-morrow at 11 A. M., and 7:30 P. M. Subject of the evening lecture, "Partisan Politics." Seats are free and all are welcome.
THE boys who were in the Prairieton conflict the other evening assure us that they were invited into the watermelon patch, to which we made allusion day before yesterday. They claim that stones were thrown at them by a party of men and boys that one or more of their party opened fire with pistols that the assaulting party fled in disorder and dismay, pursued by the valliant Tanners who were in hot pursuit of their hides. Now the truth about the whole matter is, it was a very disgraceful affair. In the first place, the assaulting party did themselves no credit, but did the cause their opponents claim they cheered for, an infinite amouut of harm. In the second place, the firing of the party assaulted was not creditable to themselves but a dishonor to their cause, hence nothing but disgrace to all concerned can come of a further reference to the occur-
PENSIONS.—The pension office clerks, with their usual urbanity, entertained another large number of pensioners yesterday, and sent them home happy with their little checks, which were all promptly cashed at the First National Bank.— Springfield Journal (Grant).
The pension agent of Springfield is Mr,„ Sam Jones. That gentleman was appointed to the position just as SOQH as Dr. Jayne was removed for being a Liberal. The change was made through the influence of the Hon. S. M. Ciillum, late M. C. from the Springfield District, and the man who made the. motion for Gen. Grant's renomination' and to sum it all up, these gentlemen are both greatly interested in thd First National Bank alluded to above. The pension money they keepJn their own bank—and by reading, the above extract from the Grant organ one would be led to the conclusion that the fact of the checks being promptly cashed at the First National Bank was an unusual item of news!
THIS evening a couple of very able and eloquent gentlemen from Illinois will address our fellow-citizens at the Temple, on the political issues of the day. We allude to the Hon. Samuel W. Moulton and George R. Wendling, of Shelbyville. Both are brilliant speakers. The former has ably represented Illinois in Congress as Congressman-at-large, and is now as he has ever been, a Republican, his party having deserted him and gone over to the Bourbons, as represented in general convention at Louisville.
Mr. Wendling is a Liberal Democrat, and though he is young in years, he is a most eloquent speaker. Go and hear them.
THE Marshall Herald is considerably exercised about the C., D. & V. R. R. from Paris to Marshall. It gives a multiplicity of contradictory reports about its location and date of completion, and then petulautly breaks forth in something like the following storm of inquisitiveness: ,,iaI "If any body knows anything about it, or if anybody knows of anybody who does know anything about it, will he, she or they lend an ear while we give he, she or they one gentle interview 'Tis sad that the enterpising Herald can't work out the mystery.
One Way of Doing It.
This evening as the Grantites pass along the streets, with their one hundred thousand torch lights carried by the rank and file of the party, there will be standing on the sidewalks, with their hands in their pockets, the Postmaster, the Collector, the Gauger, and the leaders, who will reap all the profits from the demonstration and put the proceeds in their pockets, while the silly fellows who pay the taxes, carry the torches. It is first rate, but anything to beat Greeley.
WALLACE PAYNE, head clerk at Foster Bro's Terre Haute branch of the New York City Store, returned from the Barclay national camp meeting of Inskip & Co., and the Quincy Fair, iu Illinois, last night. He reports an interesting meeting and a splendid fair. He says the Leland Hotel, of Springfield, has no equal. Mr. D. N. Foster, managing head of the firm, is greatly relieved by Mr. Payne's opportune return, as his cashier is sick, and his duties have been of a pressing and general character.
THE Indianapolis grocers have adopted a plan that it would be well for our dealers in that line, as well as in other lines of busiaess, to adopt. They have entered into a protective association to protect themselves against imposition by those who run a bill at one place, and then leaving it unsettled, trade somewhere else. That is those-who are able to pay. Such offenders, under the working of the protective association, are published in a pamphlet for reference by the grocers.
D. B. WATSON had his foot badly mashed at the Terre Haute & Indianapolis engine house yesterday. Dressed at the Surgical Institute.—Ind. Sentinel.
Items of the Coining Fair.
The following persons have atready engaged stalls for thoroughbred cattle: Claude Matthews, Clinton, 12 Charles Lowder, Plain field, 12 Harvey Sandusky, Vermillion, Illinois, 16 James Gaines, Ridge Farm, Illinois, 9 John Giles, Sullivan, 20. All of the above are for thoroughbred cattle. The competition for the societies premiums will be lively, especially for the $100 premium for the best herd of five.
The sale of stands at the grounds was a grand success, the amount received for sales was $179, and several more are engaged in advance.
EVERY good, able-bodied Republican will be glad to take a torch and iall into line this evening.—Express.
The attention of the Express is mo.st respectfully called to a communication from a "Halting Republican" in another part of this paper, which was crowded out or yesterday's issue. We know of no more able-brained Republican than the writer, in this city.
