FALL PATTERNS: FALL PATTERNS! FALL PATTERNS! FALL PATTERNS!
Mme. Demorest's Fall and Winter Patterns, for Ladies' and Children's Dress, have just arrived. Catalogues can be obtained free of cost at our store, in which oach style is illustrated and price of Pattern given. We expect to very largely increase our trade in these Patterns this fall. They are so accurately cut, and the directions for cutting and making up any garment from them are so thorough and simple, that dress making is made easy. By their use much expense is avoided, and the annoyance from poorly cut paper patterns entirely done away with. Mme. Demorest stands at the head of American fashions, and her patterns are almost invariably used by first-class dress makers. Until recently her prices were somewhat higher than those charged for inferior styles produced by other pattern makers. Recently, however, all her 40c, 50c and 60c Patterns have been reduced to 20c, 25c and :50c, thus placing them in the reach of all.

WILL C. BUNTIN is in Cleveland attending the National Pharmaceutical Convention.
FREDERICK SHEPARD, Esq., who has spent several months very pleasantly at the Martin mansion, South Fifth street, has gone to Alabama on business.
THE handsomest posters ever seen in this city are those being posted up about in the country, announcing the Vigo County Fair. Dishon is doing the posting.
Tun lion. Jolm'B. Stoll, of Ligonier, now candidate for Auditor of State, will speak in this city on the evening of October 2. Let our German friends bear this in mind.
THE Greeley Cadets were out in force last night, with their torches and kettle drum. The Captain of the company sports a sanguinary looking sword, which gives him a warlike appearance.
ONE of our Egyptian exchanges tells about a ben having incubated the eggs of a crocodile and adds that no sooner had the terrible saurian come to consciousness than he proceeded to devour the ben
THE Everybody, for August, comes to hand late nevertheless, it is welcome to m- *al)Ie. The number before us contains one of the handsomest engravings we have ever seen in a magazine, that of "Maria, Theresa."

Narrowly Escaped Lynching. Our Danville correspondent detailed in our columns of yesterday the particulars of the dastardly murderof Deputy Sheriff Stewart, of Vermillion county, Illinois, while endt-avoring to effect the arrest of a daring robber named Conner, on a charge of cattle stealing.
Ayouag man named Link, a traveling agent of Forster & Fahnley, this city, chanced to be traveling through the com munity where the tragedy happened soon afterward. While pursuing his course in the discharge of his duties he was captured and almost identified as the murderer of Stewart. To make the identification complete it would have only been necessary for him to have been a little taller. A mob soon had him in charge, and had he not so earnestly assured them that he was not their man, directing them to telegraph his employers, he would most certainly have been lynched, notwithstanding his lack in stature. While they yet held him in charge the dispatch was answered by Messrs. Forster & Fahnley that the man they had apprehended was their agent. Then was he released, thankful that his life had been spared.
This is another proof that mob law is an outrage and a disgrace to civilization, under any circumstances. Enough men have been hanged on circumstantial evidence adduced in court, when the excitement of the murder had passed away many, too, have been executed on false testimony.
A Question of Courtesy..
Au interesting suit came up before 'Squire Dennihie this morning, in which the Express newspaper, represented by Messrs. W. C. Ball and W. H. Duncan, appeared as plaintiff, and T. J. Forrest, Esq., as defendant.
Plaintiff brought suit on accounts aggregating $68, some of the accounts dating as far back as 1866.
After the evidences was all in, and the 'Squire signified his determination to take the case under advisement, an animated discussion arose between the attorneys on the question of courtesy. Mr. Forrest took the grounds that it was a violation of the courtesy of the bar for one attorney to bring suit against another or rather that he would not bring suit against a professional brother, especially after that brother bad signified his willingness to liquidate the account, had he the means at hand, which he claimed men do not alwaj's have.
Mr. Ball argued that he knew of no established rule of courtesy to protect a member of the bar from the law that they brought the suit in this case on behalf of the Express newspaper, as professional lawyers. Meantime, Mr. Duncan retired from the court room in disgust, while Messrs. Ball aud Forrest grasped each other's hands across the bloody chasm.
THE Northwestern Farmer, published at Indianapolis, is one of the best agricultural exchanges we receive, especially for Western farmers, for whose benefit it is intended. Its articles are carefully prepared and arranged under appropriate headings. An important feature of the paper in future will be one engraving, or more, in each number, of the fiuest stock in some of the best herds of thoroughbred cattle in Indiana. Now that the Banner has the indorsement of the State .Agricultural anil Horticultural Societies and a large number of County and District Associations, it Is placed upon a permanent basis and should receive the support of every Indiana farmer.
A GRANT office-holder yesterday approached a gentleman of the Democratic persuasion, after the announcement of O'Conor's nomination by the Louisville Convention, in the afternoon, and the following conversation, in substance, was overheard
Grant office-holder—Now you have a good Democrat to support. Democrat—But he is put forth by a Grant side-show, aud I will have nothing to do with him. I shall vote for Horace Greeley, if I stand alone!
This ended the interview, which proved to be short but decisive.
ST. JOHN, the fire alarm telegraph man, has been in the city of late, and has talked the City Council up on that little improvement again. We see by reference to City Clerk Schwingrouber's neat records that the matter was referred to a committee of the Council at the last meeting, with a view to reconsider the action of the body sometime since, in rescinding the contract. We need the improvement, and will need it more and more each year of our city's growth, and we are of the humble belief that we can never get it cheaper therefore we hope the Council will reconsider their action in rescinding the contract.
THE Chicago Evening Mail shouts with gladsome glee over the happy thought that the best ticket possible for the Louisville Convention to nominate, would be the following:
For President—Wilber F. Story, of the Chicago Times. For Vice President—Lydia Thompson, of the beautiful blondes.
We joiu in with this Mail, after having seconded its nomination. Such a ticket would, indeed, present a striking picture of shakiug hands across the bloody chasm, in view of Lydia having cowhided Story, not many years since.
THE shrewdest if not the most daring act of the modern metoropolitan newspaper reporter, was that performed by Chambers, of the New York Tribune. This detective reporter feigned insanity, was admitted to the Bloomingdale a-ylum on payment of fees by an assumed relative. Having made observations of the process of admission to the institution and the treatment, of inmates, having carefully noted them, he comes forth and makes an expose which will revolutionize the treatment of the insane and learn managers of such institutes not to be so defiant of investigation.
SKVKN thousand dollars are given in premiums by the Vigo Agricultural Association, whioh will open its annual exhibition on the 17th inst., at the far grouuds near this city. The present fair bids fair to be the most successful oj ever given by any county of the Statg, not excepting the Vigo fair of last yg$r which was never before equalled.
THE amiaBle editor of the" Sallivan County Union grows indignant over the accusation of some that he will vote for Greeley, and takes this position
When we cast a vote for Horace Greeley, for any office within the gilt of the people, General Grant will do the same, and there is about as much prospect of either doing so as there is of the Mississippi river and the Wabash changing beds.
After having thus let loose hispe .'-up feelings the Union man was carefully deposited in his little bed.
By the way, what Ike says above is doubtless true, but we did liot expect any better of him. Grant, however, has more at stake than he. G. can niak millious out of his position, and B. can make but about $800
MR. VOORHEES enjoyed another gia ovation, at Greencastle, last evening The Radicals had posted the platform from which he delivered his address with extracts from his speech of the 17th of May against Greeley. But Voorhees like, he made capital even of them The Rads had just as well let up on that game, Mr. V. is equal to all their tricks which with him are vain.
Oar friends will bear in mind that at our approaching County Fair we offer a Triple-plated Silver Ice Pitcher, worth $25, for the best collection of specimens of work done upon any sewing machine by any lady not in the employ of any sewing machine office. This pitcher will be on exhibition at our store any time time after Monday, September 9th.
