DRY GOODS.
SLIOW-COACITERSZ SXJOW-COACHERS! &L<OW-COACII:ERS! SLOW-€OirH£BS!
A very large amount of the Dry Goods business of the West is done by "SIowCoacbers"—men who were educated in early life to doing a small business at fearfully big profits, and who refuse to accept the new order of things and keep up with the improved business principles of to-day. They expect to make as much money off of annual sales of $30,• 000 as we make off of our annual sales of $200,000. The result is that whije our trade keeps on rapidly increasing, thereby enabling us to keep our stock always new, fresh and attractive, their business .stagnates and wastes away, and their stocks of goods become old, soiled and unattractive. The Fall Trade is now open ing. If our friends respond as generously as we believe they will to our ef~ forts to please them, our trade this fall will very largely exceed that of last season.

Grady's Circus.
Though there have been mauy circuses in this city in the last few years, none have had much poorer financial success aud ncne have merited better than Grady's. All the ring performers, especially the acrobats, did exceedingly well, none could do better under the circumstances. All that was promised was presented, and by performers who were skilled in their professions. The acrobatic feats of the Miller brothers created a sensation, as did the training of the lions by their keeper, who entered the cage and fed four of the most ferocious Kingsof the forest wo ever saw. He did it quickly and energetically, as was imperatively necessary, considering the fierceness of the beasts, which, meantime, roared with rage, but cowed down in the cage as one after another of the chambers of a revolver were emptied in rapid succession.

A First-Rate Brick.
We have before us a brick made by the Bishop & Aguew machine, now in operation on the Romine brick yard, in the southern part of the city. The brick is a most perfect one, being more solid than those made by hand, and more beautiful in its formation. Experienced men pronounce it the best brick they have ever seen. It is some heavier than the ordinary hand-moulded brick, from the fact that more clay is forced into it, and it is more compact. When it is taken into consideration that this machine, which costs only about $200, saves the expense of one entire set of hands on a yard, its value will at once be appreciated by brick-makers everywhere.
A GENTLE, blue-eyed, dirty-faced youth, whose lieels were scared with the stone bruisesof some ten summers, called in at Ed. Johnson's the other night and enlisted Mrs. Johnson's kind sympathies in his behalf by relating to her an experience of starvation and brutal treatment from a relentless stepfather winch would have made any one weep. The kindhearted lady gave the lad a good supper and lodging for the night. Ed. that night suggested that the "little Arab" would meander before daylight. And he did, carrying with him a box of paper collars, Mrs. Johnson's pocket knife and such other articles as were handy.
THERE will be a pole raising by the iCemocrats and Liberals of the Fourth and Fifth Wards in unison, at the intersection of Sixth and LaFayette streets, Saturday afternoon. Persons who participate must be at that point at halfpast four o'clock P. M. Messrs. Voorhees aud Cookerly will be present and make appropriate speeches, after which all parties will march to the Temple, where Messrs. Moulton, Wendling and Hunter will make speeches.
The pole will be 130 feet high.

GRADY'S baloonatic did not go up so high in the air as he did the previous day but he went up almost vertically, coming down over Sage's confectionery establishment. He descended gracefully, feet foremost, and when he landed did so, energetically on his pedals, doing himself and the building no injury, however. The canvass then rolled off of the roof, lodging on the wires of the P. & A. T. Co., whence it was soon dislodged and returned to the circus tent.
WE see by reference to our Poughkeepsie exchanges, that Mrs. Roberts and Freeman, of this city, and the three children of the former, had a narrow escape from death a few days siwee, by being in a vehicle when it became detached from the horses, and precipitated the occupants from it, as it rolled rapidly down a hill. All the occupants were badly scared, and more or less injured, but not seriously, we are glad to learn.
PERSONAL.—Cy. Allen, Jr., returned on Sunday night from a week's visit to Evansville and St. Louis, whither he went ou business connected with the C. & V. Railroad. He lost his pocket-book, containing about $600 in notes and currency, in the night car on the Vandalia road but, on discovering his loss, he telegraphed the conductor of the train, and was fortunate enough to recovery his property. Cyrus, you are lucky beyond your deserts.— Vincenncs Sun.
THE "damphool" convention of Mr. Grant, at Louisville, did the dirty work commanded it by the office-holders of the country, by nominating a man who had previously declined the disgrace. The grinders of the President's county hand orgau are now doing his biddiug by spreading the news broad cast over the land. The Express acted well its part by posting lip the Associated Press bulletin.
FKOJI Dr. Stephenson we learn Mr. Wood's fall was more serious than we reported yesterday, the unfortunate gentleman having suffered both ankles badly shattered, his wrist severely mashed aud one of the bones of oue of his legs broken square ofl'. Mr. Wood iw a hard vvorkiug man and a good carpenter, and we regret to learn of his misfortune.

Bells]
Editor of Evening Gazette: I see that one of your correspondents suggests that we ought to have bells on our cars, like they have in large cities. Wonder if he got his metropolitan ideas while shoveling dirt for Richardson's livery establishment at Brazil. Be this as it may, if lie wants to hear the hilarious jingling of bells, he can procure a string of cow bells aud suspend them around his neck. Hirr.
