SPECUL4TORS! NPECVLATOBS! SPECULATORS! SPECULATORS! An infamous ring of New York specula tors, making the high prices of wool and cotton a pretext for their rascality, formed a combination some weeks since to bolster up and sustain the present high prices of Dry Goods until after the Western merchants had visited New York and laid in their fall stocks. Our New York partners have been watching their movements, and while these speculators have been craming Western merchants full of goods under the lalse statement that "goods must be higher," we have refused to buy a dollar's worth of poods except in such cases as where our terms have been complied with. The market is now breaking, just as we knew it would, and the result will be that we shall get our fall stock at a very mut'h lower figure than those who have allowed themselves to be "stuffed" with the notion that goods were going up instead of down. Our customers will not have to pay the high prices that other Western merchants must necessarily charge.

THE Express has righted the flag over General Hunter's appointments.

MAIL tranfer agent Walker is preparing for a rainy day." He's going into the hotel business.

MANY "death colds" have been acquired by sleeping in the yard, as many have been doing of late.

THE Hon. A. J. Hunter will make his Terre Haute speech at the Greeley Temple Saturday evening week.

COL. W. E. MCLIEAI^ will make his first speech in the city campaign at the Greeley Temple, Saturday night of this week. £i

WE understand that General John A. Logan will speak at the Radical Roost, in this city, in a few days. Saturday week, say.

EX-DEPUTY Postmaster Durgan, of Fort Wayne, is learning a trade at Michigan City. Another vote lost to the Administration.

THE defendant in the buckboard-smash-ing case, tried before 'Squire Dennihie, yesterday, is named Bensom. He was fined and costed $30.70.

COAL shipment has commenced, over the Cincinnati & Terre Haute Railroad, and the passenger business improves in a wonderful ratio, daily.

AUTUMN is dawning upon the temperate zone for the eighteen hundred and seventy-secgad time since the Christian era dawned u|»on a benighted heathen world.

WE hope the Georgia Minstrels will have a good house to-morrow evening, if they merit it they did when here before. Go to the Opera House, see and hear them.

MCKEE RANKIN, and his wife, Kitty Blanchard, have been engaged to play at the Union Square Theatre, New York City, the coming season, as has Mark Smith.

R.AFKA KKENE and Combination will not favor Terre Haute with a visit until ubouI November 1st, as satisfactory arrangements for an earlier appearance could not be effected.

Coles Comity Fair.

We are under obligations to the Secretary of the Coles County Agricultural Society for compliuaentaries to their loth annual Fair, to be giveu from September 10th to 1-ilh, at the city of Charleston, Illinois.

Supplementing the invitation to be present, Mr. Evans informs us that "their coining fair promises to excel any of their former efforts that they have improved the grounds and just completed an additional floral hall, dining hall, ladies' dressing room, new seates, stables and new track. The I. & St. L. R. R. will carry passengers from your city at excursion rates, and we trust many of your citizens will take this opportunity to take a holiday, as we will give them a fine show."

If any of our citizens can attend the Coles County Fair, we can assure them that they will be amply repaid for the investment, as the Association do nothing in their line but that which is first-class in every respect.

The Greeley Cadets.

The Greeley Cadets, to the number of 40, through the courtesy of Mr. Joseph Gilbert, enjoyed a torclilight procession through the streets last evening. Notwithstanding the fact that they were disappointed in getting their uniforms in time for their demonstration, they made a very attractive appearance. During the evening they were presented with an elegant flag by Mrs. S. W. Forrest, Miss Alice Fischer making the presentation speech in most acceptable style which was.appropria'tely responded to by Capt. Baird in behalf of the Cadets. Throughout, the evening was pleasantly and profitably spent by all who participated and witnessed.

The Cadets hereby tender their thanks to Mr. Joseph Gilbert for the use of the lamps, and to Mrs. Forrest and Miss Fischer for the honor of the flag presentation.

The boys will soon have their uniforms and torches.

Struck by Li.htning.

Mr. Shipley's residence on North Sixth street, was struck by lightning this morning during the prevalence of the storm. Mrs. S. and their little daughter were prostrated by the bolt. The latter was sitting on an ottoman near the door, which was knocked from under her leaving the child insensible on the floor. When the mother recovered from the shock, she found her daughter insensible, in which condition she remained some time, but finally regained consciousness, though her nervous system is considerably shattered.

The bolt went through the main building, into the kitchen, demolishing the stove pipe, smashing the dishes, and slivering great splinters off the woodwork of the inside of tbe building.

ED. SHAW aud Clara Carter were enjoying a drive and merry chat near Marshall, Sunday, until the Horse became frightened at something Ed. told Clara, kicked up his h§els, and Ed. climbed gracefully over the dashboard and stood on his head in the road. The horse then ran at a thundering rate of speed for some distance, when Miss Carter seized hold of the lines, braced her feet against the dashboard, and sat down, the horse necessarily stopping, simultaneously, in a fence corner.

We are pleased to learn that neither gentleman or lady were hurt.

MR. SULLIVAN, with his "brass kpucks," erected an awning over th.e op tics of Pat Shields, at the Hollow Square cess pool, yesterday afternoon because Pat had nobody to shield him from harm while he made love to the girls. Both are in the Station House. Pat in charge of a physician. Decent people have no sympathy for him, and will have none for his assailant if he is sent to the penitentiary, as he should be

JUDGE Samuel H. Buskirk, of the Su preme Court, honored the GAZETTE with a call to-day. He has been in the city for several days on business connected with the settlement of the Burton will case, he being leading counsel for Mrs Langford. The Judge appears to be worked down, yet he returns to his duties this afternoon. Supreme Court con venes in Indianapolis, too, Monday.

AN Engineer of the St. Louis & Southeastern Railroad came into Evansville, tbe other day, bearing in triumph, on his noble cowcatcher, a nice lot of veal, which he generously presented to the baggage smasher. The b. 8. sold it for $4, and paid the old farmer—to whom it belonged, ere the Engineer slaughtered it on the track—$2* to satisfy his claim!

THE storm came up about one o'clock this^ciorning, the temperature of the at mosphere changing from hot to cold in a very few moments. Just prior to the rain the wind whistled around house corners in a manner peculiar to autumn, forcibly reminding us that the season is on the eve of a change.

THE Crescent City Band, of Evans ville, one of thf best of the Southwest, is in the city, having accompanied the Evansville surviving members of the old Fourteenth Regiment and their friends to this city to participate in the reunion The baud is one of tbe best in the business, it is said.

THE Coroner's Jury of Marion county found that Crowe was, murdered by Dreaher, in the first degree. The wife of defendant arrived soon after the verdict had been rendered and seemed almost distracted with grief at the unhappy position of her husband.

THE Cincinnati & Terre Haute Railroad has a Grant locomotive of 48 tun, which is undoubtedly the largest running on any of the roads passing through Terre Haute. Like its name-sake, it is a "dead weight."

THE celebration of to-day, taken in connection with the drumming incident to the political campaign, serves to remind us all of the war times which we are all striving to forget in the glorious .time of peace and plenty.
