There is a c'acs of croakers who are predicting an unprofitable fall business jn consequence of llie Presidential election. We fake no stock in any such predictions. We look foran enormous trade during I lie next six months, and we are making our preparations accordingly. We propose to increase this fall our enormous s»le« of last season at least THIRTY I ER CENT. We shall do this t.y offering a more beautifully assorted and attractive stock than ever before, at e\en smaller profits than in the past.

City and Neighborhood.
\o MATTERS of general iuterest transpiring in the courts.
READ the GAZETTE campaign programme 011 fourth page.
ALL is life and thrift and energy along tie line of the & T. FT. R. R.
THF, Third Wtyd Greeley Club now has one hundred and four members.
SKE programme of the Fourteenth lunteer-i' re-union, in our local notice )1 umns.
THE Laura Keene Combination will appear at the Opera House the last of September.
REV. COLFMAN, of New York, preaches in Asbur.v Church, morning and evening, Sunday.
SOMETHING of interest to the friends of the "'. & T. H. R. R. will be found in our columns to-day.
WE are .under many obligations to Messrs. Peddle, Nesbett and Lewis, for courtesy extended us.
BROTHER PIERCE and Father Malone will "cla^p ha-^ds across the bloody chasm," this evening.
Up to the hour of going to press, we have not heard of the presence in this c'tv of the (Wilting editor of the Indianapolis Journal.
WILL the pile political preacher, this even'ng, toil his colored brethren about the Greeley meeting be attended, whsre there were but three men and a dog?
Now LET the Chairman of the Grant O ntnil Committee and the commander of the Liberal-Democratic Escort Club clasp hands across the bloody chasm.
WE pre-ent our readers with the report o" the Inspection Commission of the C. &T. H. R. R. in this issue. It is prepared and submitted by disinterested pirties, persons of great railroad experience.
REV. Whisky Gauger Hamilton and W. Kossuth Edwards addressed a small squad of Third Ward Grantites at Gilman's cooper shop last evening. The rest of the inhabitants of the city in their little beds were also edified and electrified.
IN the northeast part of the city will be established the new rolling mill the hominy mill is already located there the C. & T. H. R. R. runs through it, and other great enterprises are contemplated, which will eventually make that portion of our city one of the most important points of Terre Haute.
ONE of the most, interesting and pleasairt occurrences of the season will be the re union of the surviving members of the Fourteenth Indiana Volunteers, at the Fair Grounds, in this city, on the 2Sth inst. We have been furnished the programme of proceedings, which will be found duly noted in our local notice columns.
TIIE many friends of Superintendent Wood and the friends of the C. & T. H. Iv. R., which he so ably represents, will exceedingly regret to learn that he is suffering severely from a bilious attack. Too much labor and anxiety caused his rostration. We hope to soon be able to chronicle his restoration to health, and consequent usefulness.
WE learn from the Journal that the Hon. John R. Eden, of Illinois, will speak in this cily at no distant date. Mr. Ederi is a promineut lawyer of Illinois, was formerly a Democratic candidate for ^Governor of the Prairie State, and at .present is a Democratic and Liberal Reute for Congress ig the
XX ABLE ARGUMENT.
Third Ward Greeley Club Meeting. At a meeting of the Third Ward Greeley Club, at Sage's cooper shop, last night, it was ordered that one hundred lamps be procured for the use of the club. Fourteen additional names were added to the roster, after which the President introduced Mr. Richard Dunnigan, candidate for State Senator. Mr. Dunnigan then proceeded to make one of the most logical and convincing speeches that we have ev^i- listened to—one that would compare favorably with any made by much older political speakers, either in the arguments used, or the eloquence of its delivery. After showing how the protective tariff and national banking system operate agaiust the poor to the benefit of the capitalists, Mr. Dunnigan made a scathing arraignment of Grant's administration, showing Grant'sconnection with Corbin, Gould and Fisk in the gold transactions which caused the evermemorable Black Friday panic portrayed Grant's nepotism, aud his uulavvful and disgraceful efforts in behalf of the San Domingo scheme alluded to the frauds of the Leets, the Murphys, the Secors, the Caseys and others closing by stating that no patriotic Democrat could remain idle in this campaign without endorsing the corruptions and frauds of the present Administration. Democrats must work and vote for Horace Greeley, or the past ruinous policy of the
Gov
ernment would be repeated during the next four years in an aggravated form. He said if the Democrats would earnestly work for the whole ticket, a glorious victory would be the result in October aud November but if they hold on to the tail and denounce the head, the State and county ticket was seriously jeopardized.
Mr. Dunnigan spoke for about an hour, of which the above is but a hurried and imperfect outline. At the conclusion, three hearty cheers were given for Dunnigan, three for Greeley and three for Hendricks. The club then adjourned to meet#ext Wednesday night at the same place, when Col. Cookerly ancl B. F. Havens will deliver speeches.
A Fraudulent Straw.
Yesterday, shortly after the special train of the Cincinnati & Terre Haute Railroad had pulled out from the depot, the Mayor came around collecting straws for Grant, General Burnett an 1 Commodore Magill, having previously ascertained that the Gramites had a majority on board. When the balloting had concluded, His Honor triumphantly flourished the following figures under our prominent nasal protuberance: Geeley, 3 Grant, 14 Brick Pom«roy, 1. Thinking, that probably, there was fraud somewhere, we made an investigation, aud found that undue influences had been brought to bear in two cases. While the ballot-box had not been stuffed in one of the cases, a voter who at first stated that he'was for Greeley, was denied the privilege of stuffing when the dinner hour arrived, whereupon he changed his vote to Grant. In the other case, a strong Bourbon argument was brought to bear 011 the Brick Pumeroy man, ehe the result would have been different. Now we submit to the law-loving of this community if this undue influence is to be exerted over this great and free people in October and November?
Fearful Freaks of Lightning. During the prevalence of the storm yesterday evening, an electric bolt descended upon the country residence of Ed. Bryant, of the Adams Express Company, northeast of the city. Mrs. B. was rendered insensible by the subtle sub stance, aud remained so for some half hour or more Miss Svvope, the servant girl of the family, was slightly stunned, aud Mr. B. was slightly scorched, but not so much so that he could not give immediate attention to his wife, who he found in a very precarious condition. When she recovered consciousness her nervoussystem was greatly prostrated still. This morning the family returned to the city aud are now abiding in their Chestnut street residence. But little other damage was done than above given, which surely is enough. The house struck is located not far from the famous Perkins place, where the fiery untamed bolts of aerial electricity have been playing so many pranks of late years. Four horses aud one colt have been killed aud several persons injured in that vicinity of late, by experimental nature.
REV. TENNANT, of our city, went to Sanford the other day on a political mission. When be arrived at his destination by the I & St. L., finding but few Grautites, he constituted himselt a committee of inspection, to inspect Boord's warehouse for "Suckers" who expect to vote for Grant. Upon finding but one such, he exclaimed in the agony of despair: "What, fa it possible that in a community where there are so many churches and school houses, so few Grautites are to be found?" Mr. B. mildly informed him that he had many things to learn in this world yet and he went away sorrowfully.
As THE special train of the Cincinnati & Terre Haute Railroad flashed through Corey yesterday afternoon a solitary druggist might have been seen in a building near by, dealing out Wabash bitters to the natives, who have to indulge in appetizers that they may be stimulated to take time from their diurnal duties of developing the resources of the county, to partake sufficient of the necessities of life to nourish andsustaiu them in their arduous task. That solitary druggist was late one of our fellow-citizens, Oscar Rankin.
A FREIGHT CAR belonging to a train of the Vandalia line had one of its journals so heated by frictiou that the boxing burned out and gave way when the train was moving across Third street yesterday afternoon. In consequence of this mishap, trains were delayed but a few minutes, as under the eagle eye of Superintendent Peddle, Master of Transportation Robbins, and the conductor of the train, the obstruction was hastily run off on to a switch, that waiting trains might pass.
THE many friends of that affable gen. tlenjan, "Conductor Black, of .the Indiapolis & St. kouis Railroad, will regret to learn that he is lying dangerously ill at
