FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 1872T.
City and Neighborhood,
THE Criminal Court is still in session.
in the municipal court
SHOWERS are wont to come up rather unexpected in this municipality of late.
MR. HENDRICK'S speech worries the Express beyond its feeble expression of very feeble language.
SENATOR SCIIURZ, the ablest orator ot the century, Will speak at the Greeley Temple, Monday evening. -4^
RIPPETOE has some luscious grapes peaches, pears and such, which he will dispose of for a fair consideration.
CARL SCHUBZ at the Greeley Temple Monday evening. Don't fail to hear him and heed his words of warning.
OUR exchanges are taking up the matter of the C. & T. H. R. R. excursion and they treat it in the dignified manner it merits.
THE Greeleyites have secured one of O'Boyle's magnificent rooms, in the mammoth stone front Main street block, for their headquarters. ...
THE office of the P. & A. Telegraph Company, this city, will he removed into Tuell's Block, on Main street, between Fifth and Sixth in a few days.
THE JExpre88 thinks the audience that listened to Mr. Hendrick's Temple speech were mostly Grant men. There were a few blackguards of-that persuasion there, we admit.
A MODERN David of mature age slung at cold potato at another fellow" this morning, and struck a lady in the face, knocking her down. Be careful how you throw potatoes.
READ the rest of Mr. Hendrick's able and eloquent speech and don't forget to note Mr. Voorhees' defense against the charges preferred by General Hunter regarding Mr. V.'s action in Congress during the war.
WM. H. LAKE was admitted to the bar before Judge Long on yesterday. We understand that Mr. Lake intends to go into the business of buying and selling real estate, and also to prosecute with determination the study of the law.
IN our columns of this issue, we pre sent our readers with the remainder of the remarks of Mr. Hendricks, at the Greeley Temple, and so much of the retoarks of Mr. Voorhees as we have room for, regretting that we cannot give it all, because it was able and eloquent.
RAY G. JENCKES & Co. have a mammoth stave factory down at the old reservoir, on the C. T. H. R. R., and quite a town is springing up around them. These gentlemen will keep up with the enterprise of the C. T. H. R. R., which is saying a good deal for their enterprise.
IT is currently reprted |that a policeman arrested a stranger, the other eveniog-. in the act of associating," not far from theVaudalia depot, and allowed him to go off on the train, in consideration of his paying him (the policeman) $10. 1 he stranger told it, and will return here for the purpose of having an investigation.
THE Cincinnati & Terre Haute Railroad Company yesterday afternoon
re
ceived six new passenger coaches direct fropi the shops, and over the Vandalia line. These will make up two trains, with the two splendid baggage cars received with thfem. These coaches are said to be the best in the West, and are in harmony with all the rest of the elegant eqqiptartents of this excellent line, which will have nothing that is not new and first-class. All aboard for Mlddtebury and polatft intermediate.
Sad Accident.
We regret to learn that Coroner Gerstmeyer is lying at his residence in a very precarious condition, the result of an accident by which he was thrown from his buggy while driving on South Sixth street yesterday. The doctor was driving leisurely along, when his horse "shied," throwing him violently to the ground. He was picked up, taken to his residence and surgical and medical aid summoned. Dr. Purcell, assisted by Drs. Robert*, Stephenson and Long, made an examination of the injuries, finding a compound dislocation of the left ankle, a fracture of the large bone of the leg and protrusion from the flesh. These injuries were of a very severe character and required great skill in dressing them but the gentlemen were equal to the emergency. They removed a portion of the lower end of the bone where broken, as it pressed upon the joint. The patient, though a great sufferer, will recover a fair use of the limb.
Resolution of Thanks.
TERRE HAUTE, IND., Aug. 6,1S72. At a meeting of the Directors of the C. & T. H. R. R. Co, held this day, the following resolution was adopted:
Resolved, That the Cincinnati & Terre Railway Company hereby tender their hearty thanks to the Indianapolis, Cincinnati fc LaFayette, the Indianapolis fe St. Louis, the St. Louis, Yandalia, Terre & Indianapolis, the Evansville, Terre Haute fc Chicago railroad companies lor generous courtesies and liberal lacilities afforded by those lines, both in the loan of cars and the free transit given to passengers over their roads to the participants in the celebration of to-day and it is ordered that the Secretary furnish a copy of this resolution to each of the aforesaid companies and to the press.
By order,
C. F. BETTS, Sec'y.
As announced in the GAZETTE of yesterday, there was a meeting of the Greeley Club l»3t night, in the room over Donnelly's drug store. The attendance was quite large, and there was an evident desire on the part of every one present to engage in the work of the campaign with a will. Joseph Gilbert and James H. Douglass were elected Vice Presidents of the Club, and A. Kelley as an additional Secretary. Other business of importance was transacted, and the Club adjourned to meet again on Saturday evening, when arrangements will be made for the reception of Carl Schurz on Monday evening next.
SOME TiMdfeince we chronicled an accident which deprived Yardmaster Wood, of the Vandalia, of an arm. We regret to announce that the household has been seriously bereaved. Yesterday, Mr. W.'s son, Willie, aged sixteen, and who carried water to the workmen on the construction train, fell from that train while it was being drawn, at full speed, over the road. The lower part of his lower limbs were horribly crushed and mangled and it was necessary for the attending surgeon to amputate one Of them. The unfortunate and interesting young fellow, is doing as well as could be expected under: the circumstances.
BRICK POMEROY'S paper caricatures both Grant and Greeley.—Journal.
Wherein the blackguard of Pomeroy Democrat differs with the Bourbon dirtheaver of the Terre Haute Journal, who devotes his vigorous energies to carica turing Mr. Greeley. No wonder his papers are distributed to Indianapolis Democrats, free of charge, by the office htofders and seekers.
THE Northwest Indiana M. E. Con ference meets at Thorntown September 4th, Bishop1 Janes presiding. This Con ference holds in- its power the destinies of our worthy Pastors, Green and Hill for the next term. We hope the mem bers of Asbury and Centenery will exhibit their accustomed activity in eir culating a paper provitfrag for their re tention here another year.
THE Congressional Globe one of the spiciest and most enterprising: papers of the day—but the people are not yet educated up to the fact!—Journal.
And the Terre Haute Journal Is a wonderfully enterprising sheet—and it has fully educated the people up to the fact —that its enterprise is all manifested in its unrivalled ability to throw dirt.
RECOVERED.—A letter was received yesterday by James M. Gordon from Mr. Henry Greenawalt, in which the latter states that he has completely recovered from that railroad accident. The matter was greatly exaggerated by the papers, he not being seriously hurt by the accN dent. Mr. G. will be at home about the 25th inst.—Journal.

WE QUOTE the following from Wat son's Art Journal, New York, in refference to Bacon & Karr's Pianos, advertised in another column
Bacon & Karr, though really a n^v firm, are, by inheritance, old established manufacturers. Thirty years ago the firm was known as Bacon & Raven, and stood among the first manufacturers in the country. We knew their instruments well then, and also knew that they were held in the highest estimation for the beauty of their tone, touch, and finish and for their remarkable durability. Iu all these qualities they were not excelled
A change took place in the firm after the death of Mr. Bacon the elder it was then known as Raven & Bacon, and their pianos continued to be among the best manufactured in the country for they kept pace with the rapid im provements which sprung up from time to time, both in Europe and here. The firm agaiu dissolved in 1871, when anew partnership was formed, which is now known as Bacon & Karr, at 255 Greene street. Mr. Karr was ten years in the factory with the old firm, and is a thor oughly qualified piano-maker, having had over thirty years' practical expe rience in the business.
We have tried and carefully examined many of the instruments manufactured by Messrs. Bacon & Karr, and find them to be honestly constructed of good, sound material and beautifully finished. Tha tone is clear, true, melodious and sonorous, with much power the touch is elas tic, quick, and powerful, and in all re spects they are instruments that can be relied upon. Their new scale is an ex ceedingly beautiful instrument admire ble in tone and touch, and with remark able power. We can commend these in strumentsas sound anl worthy, and fully equal to all that is claimed for them.
Notice.—A meeting will be held at Col Dowling's office, on Saturday, August 10, 1872, at 2 o'clock P.M., for such business as may come before the Agricultural Society. All members are requested to be present. By order of the President 6d3
