GREELEY TEMPLE dedication

No MORE smallpox ia the cityplayed out.

-it is

DON'T shoot prairie chickens unless you'want to get into trouble.

THE hotels seem to be doingr a pretty fair business just now. Popular landloids is what does the work.

IF you want to hear a logical discourse of the issues of the campaign, go to the Temple and hear Hendricks this evening.

WE know of a grocer who, when complained to about the quality of his eggs, excused himself by saying, "at this time of the year the hens are not well, and often lay bad ones."

PROF. J. L. GAY, of Vincenues, is in the city, the guest of Rev. S. Burford, of St. Stephens Church. He attended the railroad opening yesterday, and took a deep interest in the enterprise.

THE circulation of the GAZETTE has increased immensely since the campaign opened. There is a revolution going on among thp masses and they are determined to have a first-class newspaper.

SENATOR SCHURZ will address bis fel-low-citizens of Terre Haute, at the Greeley Temple, next Monday evening. Let the masses attend and.bear one of the greatest orators of the day and generation.

A CERTAIN Grant member of the Terre Haute bar, after a painfully careful perusal of Sumner's arraignment of Mr. Grant's Administration, frantically inquired what was meant by that word nepotism.

A NOTE from Indianapolis informs us that several thousand copies of political speech are badly needed in that city.— Journal. "Rest in peace." Several thousand copies of a political speech were shipped to that city by express a day or two ago.

JOSEPH TREAT, ESQ., Financial Agent of tbe celebrated Bessemer Steel Manufacturing Company ^NewBruuswick, New Jersey, is iu the city. He makes his headquarters at 98 Broad way,New York, and visited Terre Haute to participate in tbe C. & T. H. excursion.

IN our columns of to-day will be found a full report of the excursion and speeches of the C. & T. H. R. K. yesterday. We give this report to the exclusion of our usual variety of general news and miscellaneous city matters, because we think it of more importance than all else.

THERE was a large crowd of people at Brazil j'esterday. Col. Thompson presided, and the Hon. Henry Wilson was the fpeaker of the day, as per programme. We have not room for further notice of the meeting, on account of the press in our columns of a matter of more general interest.

MATRIMOXTAI,.—An

interesting little

party assembled at the Graff mansion, on O to street, last evening, to witness the matrimonial union of Miss Clara A. Gaff and Mr. Levi T. Nelsou, Bev E 8 Watter officiating. After the interesting ceremouy concluded, a bountiful repast was enjoyed by all, and the happy party left on the night train for a bridal (our of the East.

from St.

Petersburgh

just received here,

state that a terrible conflagration has broken out in Nisliinongoad, where the great annual fair is now in progress. This fair which is the largest ever held in any city in the world, commenced on the first of July. It is held in a triangular space on the right bank of the river Volga. Vast quantities of goods and merchandise of every description have been already destroyed by the fire, and it is feared the entire fair ground may be swept clear of buildings before the flames can be arrested. The authorities of the city are exercising themselves to the utmost to stop the further progress of the conflagration but without success. The amount of loss is yet to be learned.

NEW YORK, August 7.—The Times' special from Raleigh, North Carolina, says the Sentinel of that place publishes the returns from eighty counties. It says Caldwell's gain will overrun the vote of 1870 by 389. Allegheny, Cherokee, Clay, Hyde, Jackson, Macon, Polk, Transylvania and Watalga counties are to be heard from. It is claimed that the addition of majorities for each candidate shows that Caldwell is 3,600 frtiead. D. A. Jenkins, Republican candidate for State Treasurer, runs several hundred ahead of his ticket. The returns for members of Congress show Cobb, Thomas, and South, Republicans, elected, and Waddell, Leach, Ashe, Robbins, and Vance, Democrats, elected. The Legislature is Democratic, the Senate by 10 and the House by 10 majority, making 20 on a joint ballot.

The Tribune's special from Raleigh says the returns received last night were unfavorable to the success of the Conservative ticket. The Conservatives have elected 31 Senators the Republicans 19. The lower House will stand 66 Conservatives, and 26 Republicans majority on joint ballot, 38. TheJTribune editorially says it still believes that Merriman's election is the honest result of the North Carolina contest. It charges the Administration with delaying the returns from remote counties until there was time to figure up the result and see what majority was needed to count for Caldwell.

In concluding, the Tribune says: "Whatever the final count may show, we have already gained far more than we expected, and have made sure of the State by a handsome majority in November. We believe that we have also honestly carried it now by a majority fully as great as that claimed iu the Tribune twenty-four hours after the election."

The Times thinks the result is positively, and under all circumstances, a disastrous Democratic defeat.

NK\V YORK,August7.—Gold advanced to 15J yesterday upon continued heavy custom receipts, which were stated at nine hundred thousand coin redemption 5-20's to date, $59,398,000.

Erie stiffened upon the announcement that Drew had closed out his famous contract to deliver 5,000 shares any time to December next at 55. Foreign exchange was nominal in consequence of the scarcity of cash.

NEW YORK, August 7.—A special to the Tribune from Chicago says, the Tribune of that city this morning publishes a letter from General John Farnsworth, addressed to Daniel Shepard, Secretary of the Illinois State Central Committee, in which he withdraws from the Bepublican party, and announces his intention of supporting Greeley and Brown.

Spotted Tail and other Indian chiefs will visit tbe Indian Commissioner today.

NEW YORK, August 7.—The World, commenting on the result of the North Carolina elections, thinks the inference, from the earliest stage of the campaign, have shown clearly that Greeley's prospects were better than Grant's.

Mace and Baldwin are still in active training for the coming battle. The former is at Thomson's, Highlands, Neversink. The final arrangements for meeting have now been made. The fight takes place in Pennsylvania but the exact locality is still a secret.

WASHINGTON, D. C., August 7.—The following dispatch was received at the White House, this morning

RALEIGH, N. C., August 7.

To the Presid nt: North Carolina has elected the entire Bepublican State ticket, by majorities ranging from 1,500 to 2,000. (Signed.) THOMAS SETULE.

WE QUOTE the following from Watson's Art Journal, New York, in refference to Bacon & Karr's Pianos, advertised in another column

Bacon & Karr, though really a new firm, are, by inheritance, old established manufacturers. Thirty years ago the firm was known as Bacon & Raven, and stood among the first manufacturers in the country. We knew their instruments well then, and also knew that they were held in the highest estimation for tbe beauty of their tone, touch, and finish, and for their remarkable durability. Iu all these qualities they were not excelled.

A change took place in the firm after the death of Mr. Bacon the elder it was then known as Raven & Bacon, and their pianos continued to be among the best manufactured in the country for they kept pace with the rapid improvements which sprung up from time to time, both iu Europe and here. The firm again dissolved in 1871, when a new partnership was formed, which is now known as Bacon & Karr, at 255 Greene street. Mr. Karr was ten years in tbe factory with the old firm, and is a thoroughly qualified piano-maker, having had over thirty years' practical experience in the business.

We have tried and carefully examined many of tbe instruments manufactured by Messrs. Bacon & Karr, and fiud them to be honestly constructed of good, sound material and beautifully finished. Tha tone is clear, true, melodious and sonorous, with much power the touch is elastic, quick, and powerful, and in all respects they are instruments that can be relied upon. Their new scale is au exceedingly beautiful instrument admirable in tone and touch, and with remarkable power. We can commend these instruments as sound an 1 worthy, and fully equal to all that is claimed for them.

Kotice.—A meeting will be held at Col. Dowling's office, on Saturday, August 10, 1872, at 2 o'clock P.M., for such business as may come before the Agricultural Society. All members are requested to be present. By order of the President. 6d3
