TUESDAY, AUGUST 6, 1872.

City and Neighborhood.

COUNCIL night.

A PLEASANT day for a railroad excur-

THE new Greeley Temple is approaching completion.

JOHN G. SHRYER returned from Saratoga yesterday morning.

J. F. BETTS, Philadelphia, Treasurer of the C. & T. H. R. R., is in the city.

SIMON HIRSCHLER, of Goidman'S Clothing Emporium, left for the East yesterday.

MR. J. B. EDMUNDS, of the Journal, was quite sick yesterday. Too much excitement.

THE last sheet of the city director# were printed last night, and the work will be delivered next week.

G. W. INGALLS and wife, of Springfield, are in the city, and are spending the day with the C. & T. H. excursionists at Middlebury.

NOTWITHSTANDING the large reportorial staff of the Daily Almanac, that puerile publication was not represented at the wigwam meeting.

WE recret to learn of the sudden death of the Hon. Martin M. Ray, of Indianapolis, which melancholy event occurred in Indianapolis, yesterday.

HON. JOHN. S. SCOBEY was in the city tn-day, on his way over the C. & T. H. Railroad. He brings the most encouraging news for Greeley from the eastern part of the State.

WE heard a couple of ill-mannered city boys "snickering" at the appearance of a portly country boy and his blooming bride, yesterday. Rumor hath it that the newly wedded pair pair were from Mattoou.

TO-MORROW the Christian Sunday School Convention, for the State of Indiana, will be in session at Greensburg. W. B. Wharton, Esq., and lady, of this city, attend as delegates from the Terre Haute Christian Chapel.

W. C. WICICHOFF, Esq., managing editor of the New York Tribune is in the city. He and General Alfred Pleasanton, President, came west to participate in the opening excursion of the Cincinnati & Terre Haute Railroad.

THE pious and impersonal editors of the Bedford press are at it again. According to their papers, somebody has lied about the printing press, this time. How we do like to see the brethren dwell together in peace and harmony!

THE Second Presbyterian Church, of Springfield, a magnificent new structure, is to have the name of Rev. Gilbert Robertson, erased from its corner-stone, because he gotdruuk asd went off to Chicagender1

THE Science of Health, for August, has come to hand. This publication is a monthly which has a high mission and will live. There is need for£ft, and it will.not be to the credit of^ the AmeriQan. people to let it die. The Water Works. TERRE HAUTE, August 5,1872.

Editor of Terre Haute Gazette: In your Saturday's Evening GAZETTE, you have a paragraph in reference to the construction of the Terre Haute Water Works, in which you say "The Water Works machinery will be commenced in a very few days." You also say, that "The indications are, that the works will be in successful operation by the time specified in the contract, viz: January 1, 1873." May 1 rise to explain Work was commenced on the machinery nearly a month since, and the boilers are nearly completed. You may be very

the works will be fully completed before the time agreed upon. It

been easily done in ninetydaysbutfor two important items the articles or agreement Your Water. Works Com nanv hi very fortunate in its selection of ffiEU. They succeeded in making a contract, requiring us to throw sixteen fire streams one hundred feet high, when your Council, by the charter, only required six. Besides that, we have to build the machinery with special reference to a possible rise of twenty-six feet in your river. It is therefore necessary to make the machinery of a different construction from any for which the Clapp & Jones Manufacturing Company had patterns. An entirely new set of patterns having to be made, it takes time consequently the machinery will be longer in building than under other circumstances, giving ample time to complete the other parts of the work without any extraordinary effort.

I had an ambition to build the works not only superior to anything of the Fame capacity in the country (which is apart of the agreement), but also to do it in less time. In the latter particular, possibly my ambition may not be gratified but all your good temperance people may rely upon an abundant supply of filtered water, from twelve miles of pipe, and the other sort can change their whisky from forty rod to a less capacity, from the same source, by the 20th of December.

While I am up, let me explain that this is not the Holly system of water works, but the Clapp & Jones system, Mr. M. R. Clapp, who has no superior as a mechanic in the country, being the in ventoraud constructor of the work. It pumps water directly into the pipes with a given pressure varied at will, and con trolled by Clapp's automatic regulator.

That same thing was done three hun dred years since, minus the regulator. The Clapp & Jones Manufacturing Company do not claim that as especially a part of their system, neither do they ad mitthat any one has any special claim to it as apart of any system at the pres ent time.

The Holly system, with its more recent improvements, has two sets of machinery, one with a set of gang pumps, for domes tic supply, the other rotary pumps for fire protection. Clapp & Jones construct two entire sets of machinery, with Clapp's patent piston pumps only, the same pumps working at different velocities gjving both domestic supply and "fire streams." It is practically in its workin a combination of the Holly system an the stand pipe system, having none of the objectionable features of the one, and remedying all the objections to the other. In the Clapp Jones system, one or both sets of machinery being in operation, if an alarm of fire is given, it is only necessary to inscrease the speed, to give any number of fire-streams required, thus avoiding the necessity of getting another set of machinery in operation before that can be done.

But I am taking up too much of your valuable space, aud will take my seat. Yours, &c., J. A. RICHARDSON.

WE QUOTE the following from Watson's Art Journal, New York, in reffer ence to Bacon & Karr's Pianos, advertised in another column

Bacon & Karr, though really a new firm, are, by inheritance, old established manufacturers. Thirty years ago the firm was known as Bacon Raven, and stood among the first manufacturers in the country. We knew their instruments well then, and also knew that they were held in the highest estimation for the beauty of their tone, touch, and finish, and for their remarkable durability. In all these qualities they were not excelled.

A change took place in the firm after the death of Mr. Bacon the elder it was then known as Raven & Bacon, and their pianos continued to be among the best manufactured in the country for they kept pace with the rapid improvements which sprung up from time to time, both in Europe and here. Th« firm again dissolved in 1871, when anew partnership was formed, which is now known as Bacon & Karr, at 255 Greene street. Mr. Karr was ten years in the factory with the old firm, and is a thoroughly qualified piano-maker, having had over thirty years' practical experience in the business.

We have tried and carefully examined many of the instruments manufactured by Messrs. Bacon & Karr, and find them to be honestly constructed of good, sound material and beautifully finished. Tha tone is clear, true, melodious and sonorous, with much power the touch is elas* tic, quick, and powerful, and in all respects they are instruments that can be relied upon. Their new scale is an exceedingly beautiful instrument admirable in tone and touch, and with remarkable power. We can commend these instruments as sound an 1 worthy, and fully equal to all that is claimed for them.

THE HON. B. W. HANNA has his harness on, judging from the following list of appointments which we clip from the State Sentinel:

Worthington, Thursday, August 7. Danville, Saturday, August 10. Nashville, Brown county, Tuesday, August 13, 1 P. M.

Vienna, Scott county, Wednesday, August 13, 1 P. M. Salem, Washington county, Thursday, August lo, 1 P. M.

Hardinsburp, Washington county, Fridav, August 16, 1 P. M. fiartford, Crawford county, Saturday, August 17, 1 P. M.

Jasper, Dubois county, Monday, August 19,1 P. M. Winslow, Pike county, Tuesday, August 20.1 P. M.

Petersburg, Pike county, Wednesday, August 21,1 P. M. Princeton, Gibson county, Thursday, August 22,1 P.

Evansville, Friday, August 23, night. Mt. Vernon, Saturday, August 24,1 P. M. This long list of appointments, so closely following a long list he has just finished up, indicates that Mr. H. is not lacking in enterprise and endurance in the present political campaign.

L- DCENWEG denies that he signed the "Liberal" Republican roil. The Journal says that a large number ot the names on that list are well known Democrats. Morning Almanac.

MR. MARTIN informs us that the telegraph operators on this circuit stand, politically: One for Grant and nine for Greeley. Our Democratic and Liberal friends, therefore, may rely on thewrrectness ol the Associated Press telegrarns when Repuplican successes are chronicled. —Madison Courier.

The operators send merely what :s written by the reporters of the Associated Press, and in this city the agent is the political editor of the only Radical paper in the place. The Associated Press agents and reporters are responsible for the character of the dispatches of the association. The reason the operators are so nearly all for Greeley is, the fact that they know of the lies sent over the wires designed to bolster up a bad cause. Had all men the intelligence of the average operator, there would be many more Greeley men in this country, even than there are at present.

TOM. E. WOODS, of the Mattoon Journal, accompanied by his handsome bride, were in the city yesterday afternoon. The mystery of the establishment of a new Administration paper in Mattoor^ is fully explained. Tom. has such an attraction at the house, that he finds it impossible to tear himself away, hence allows Grant and his little cause to languish. We are sure we caunot blame Tom. if our eyes decived us not.

ONE by one they come to see the error of their ways: The La Grange Independent, edited by Messrs. H. A. Sweet and A. Bayless, hitherto a strong Grant paper, has come out in favor of Greeley.

Another added to the strong phalanx of Republican papers supporting Greeley and Brown in the present canvass.

Jfotice.—A meeting will be held at Col. Dowling's office, ou Saturday, August 10, 1872, at 2 o'clock P.M., for such business as may come before the Agricultural Society. All members are requested to be present. By order of the President 6J3
