City and Neighborhood.

How's YOUR headache?

WE curtail our telegraphic dispatches to give place to matters of more local interest to-day.

WE have a lady physician among UP, "healing the sick." See her card in another column.

A COUPLE of cars were ditched oil the T. H. & I. R. R., night before last, occasioned by a broken rail.

REMEMBER that Manning's Minstrels appear in this city at Dowling Hall on thp 11th inst. See amusement columns.

XVHEN the young American orator wfnt for the bark on the tree of liberty, he very unfortunately "barked up the wrong tree 1"

BARNUM'S big moral menagerie will be exhibited in this city on the 31st inst. THe more moral of our community will Jewell to make a note of this.

THE fire clay mines, at MbtiteBU'ma, are to be worked by a new company, just organized. This ridh mineral deposit should be developed by all means, and wq feel assured that it^will be, as it is in the right hands now.

T'HE

gentleman who this morning

picked up an express package, labelled $150, went to the express office, had the same officially opened and fouticl it con tajned naught but soiled paper, is a Sunday School man, judging from his familiarity with scriptural terms descriptive of the horrors of the hereafter.

SOME fellow sent a rocket through a window of the Sixth street front of the National House, last evening, which fired the curtains, and would have resulted in a fcouflagation had not several gentlemen rushed in and extinguished the flames. No damage was done except the breakage of a few window panes.

THERE area couple of gravel pits along thie line of the Terre Haute & Chicago Railroad in Vermillion county, which are almost inexhaustible. Those of our citizens who contemplate beautifying aijd improving their yards, will do well to make a note of this fact, as there is no better gravel anywhere. The Danville Division of the E. T. H. & C. is ballasted with the gravel, and it certainly is fully as well ballasted as any railroad track in the country.

butcher named Olcott, who

kept shop near Heinig & Bro.'s Steam Bakery, celebrated the glorious 4th by scrupulously collecting all the meat bills due him, neglecting to pay those he owed others, and "jumping the town." If we are not misinformed, he managed to escape, indebted to various individuals in the sum of $500. Mr. Voris, the popular and well-known butcher, trusted him, "not wisely but too well," and now -we learn he wants to know his wherebouts about $170 worth.

IN our columns to-day will be found a pretty full record of the doings in this city and surrounding country, so far as we observed at Groendyke's grove, and could learn from other points. As will be seen, the day was pretty generally quite appropriately observed, and a very flattering degree of peace an}.good will prevailed eveiy where.

In the Qity proper, business was suspended, and the principal businessbulldogs were elegantly de?otat?d[ with the national

New Railroad Enterprise,

We learn from President Collett of the Danville division of the Terre Haute fc Chicago Railroad, yesterday, that the company he represents as chief executive, have under advisement the construction of a line of road from the northern terminus of that road—Danville—a line of track to connect with the Illinois Central at Paxton or Gilman, for the purpose of having a better and more courteous connection with Chicago. Paymaster Fitch, an accomplished engineer, is now surveying the two routes. The proposed route to Paxton is a distance of twenty-five, miles, and to Gilman, forty or forty-five miles distant from Danville. At either of these points the prposed road would connect with the Illinois Central, though Gilman is the much more direct connection of the two. Either route lays over a magnificent agricultural region, hitherto unpenetrated by a railroad.

This enterprise is superinduced by the uncourteous conduct of the Danville & Chicago division of the E., T. H. & C. line, the President of which, as representative of the will of the stockholders, insists on absorbing the Terre Haute & Danville division, including the management. Mr. Collett and the other directors and stockholders of the T. H. & D. division are

willing

to compromise the

difference, blit refuse to be absorbed. We hope the new line will be structed, for it will open up to Haute, though indirectly, communication with a very rich region of our sister Prairie State.

Morton and Hunter at the Wigwam. Pursuant to previous announcement, the Radieal Republicans made quite a demonstration night before last at their wigwam. The fiire works, under the direction of Chief Engineer Tennant, illuminated the heavens, and the Silver Cornet Band of Toute & McKiennon filled the still, damp air with melodious sounds and the reputation of Senator Morton and General Hunter called out a large audience, including a large number of ladies, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather.

The Senator addressed those in attendance for about two hours in one of his characteristic speeches, and was attentively listened to, though he failed to create bis wonted enthusiasm in his auditors.

He was followed by Genaral M. C. Hunter, in a fifteen minute speech, substantially the same as delivered at Brazil which we published at that time.

The exercises were liberally inter spersed by music from the band and a glee club.

After the speaking, the band serenaded the speaker at the residence of L. A. Burnett, Esq., and were individually introduced to the distinguished guests of Mr. B.

Not issuing any paper yesterday, and bding crowded for space to-day, we can not give a fuller report of the wigwam meeting.

MR. R. HITT, who is now actiing in the capacity of private secretary to Sen ator Morton, and who accompanied Mr. Morton to this city, is a graduate of As bury University, elassofl847 is one of the most skillful steno-phonoraphers in the United States, a most accomplished gentleman and scholar, possesses en viable social qualities, speaks the French, Spanish and German languages with great fluency, has enjoyed a varied and wide-extended experience in travel. He accompanied the Santo Do mingo Cotamis8io"n when the commiS' sion visited that island: During the regular business season at Washington, Mr. H. is regularly occupied in the most responsible positions, superintending the reporting of important national litigation, and legislative deliberation. At present he makes his headquarters at Indianapolis.

ONE of the gentlemen from this city who furnished oratorical thunder to a rural picnic, yesterday, was offered $5( for the service, but considering it a priv ilege, he deolined. The enthusiastic Chairman of the Committee of Arrangements, however, persisted in thrusting a bank bill of large denomination into his hand, .whereupon the orator was seized with cramp in the fingers. He is richer to-day than he was yesterday, while the rest of us are poorer. We refrain from giving the locality, for fear the goodly people will be beset with opportuning from young lawyers for the engagement next Fourth,

SOME impudent fellow In a buggy took fiendish delight in crowding a Terre Hautean, seated with two ladies in a buggy, from the high embankment on the road leading to the Fair Grounds, yesterday, which resulted in a couple of feminines receiving severe injuries, and a much more severe scare. While this may have been a cheerful pastime for the i. f., it did not tend to soothe the excited nerves of the Terre Hautean aud his company aforesaid.

AT the last meeting of the CouuciI, ,Mr. Milligan introduced a resolution to the effect that the Chief of Police rise to explain to the satisfaction of the Council, the truth or falsity of the charge rumored in public, that he failed to report a case of smallpox in his own house. The resolution was passed unanimously, but we failed to make a note of it, as did the other city papers. It is presumed th&f the chief will assume the perpendicular at the next Council meeting.

LAST evening, about six o'clock, a couple of gentlemen in buggies, accompanied by ladies, were trying the speed of their respective horses on Third street, when they run into an excavation, opposite the colored church, and all were badly "tore up." The gentlemen and ladies were severely injured, as were their horses. Hearing of ttiis about press time, we are unable to learn the names of the unfortunate parties
