The claims of ex-Treasurer Sehoemehl were reported on adversely by the Committee on Finance.

A petition from City Attorney Rumsey in regard to fees was referred to a committee.

The Committee on Streets reported favorably on repairing Second street and filling up the canal at that point.

The same committee reported favorably on the improvement of the switch on North Third street, and the railroad company was ordered by the Council to repair the same at once.

City Treasurer's Report:

At the regular semi-monthly meeting of the City Council last evening, City Treasurer Paddock made the following report, which was received

CITY TREASURER'S OEFICE, TERRE HAUTE, July 2, 1872.

Bate of 0ity Taxation.

Under the workings of the ordinance passed by the Council at its session last evening, the basis of city taxation for 1872 is as follows:

Seventy cents on the hundred dollars, for general purposes. Thirty cents per hundred, for railroad purposes.

Eight cents on the'hundred, for Water Works. Fifty cents on each poll. Mr. Whittaker's amendment to the ordinance of seven per cent, on the hundred, for street improvement purpose, unfortunately, was lost.

CERTIFICATES of stoek to the Terre Haute Water Works Company will be for sale by President Beach in a few days. We hope our citizens will respond liberally and promptly in taking up this stock when thrown upon the market for water works are badly needed here at present, and will be much more needed in the future. The officers of the company have spared no pains nor expense co secure the most serviceable system of water works extant, and when constructed there certainly will be no failure, as every possible avenue to failure has been and will be carefully guarded.

WE have an abiding faith that the Groendyke Grove picnic will be largely attended to-morrow. The Committee of Arrangements have a goodly number of coaches engaged for the occasion, and all have the assurance that they will be made comfortable while on the road and Mr. Groendyke is well known as one of the most hospitable of gentlemen, and his guests, while enjoying his hospitality, will lack for no comfort. The fare has been put down to $1.00 for the round trip, which little amount, one and all can afford to spend on the natal day of our national independence, when a good cause is to be furthered.

A CROWD of smart fellows, bailing from the country, somewhere in Illinois, congregated on the northwest corner of Main and Fifth streets, to-day, who would have been in a more appropriate here had they & th« calaboose.

AT the meeting of city pastors, in the Congregational Church, last afternoon, to make arrangements for the reception of Father Gavazzi,, who will address the citizens of this place, on religous topics, on the 23d inst, Rev. Mr. Sterrett was called to the chair, and the Rev. James Hill was chosen Secretary. A mass meeting was resolved upon, and Rev's. Blackford Condit and James Hill, were selected to act as a committee of reception and entertainment. The Hon. R. W. Thompson will be invited to preside and introduce the distinguished pulpit orator on that occasion.

THE Emmett Guards and College Guards will attend the police excursion to Terre Haute on the 10th inst. It is expected that the Prairie City Guards will join them in a field and dress parade.—Indianapolis Journal.

The Democratic Voters of the Fourth Ward—and all interested—will meet at No. 3 Engine House, July 8th, 1872, at 8 o'clock P.
