WEDNESDAY, JUNE 26, 1872.
City and Neighborhood.
DELIGHTFUL showers last night.
COLORED picnic at Clinton to-morrow.
THE great man from the east is in town.
Go TO Groeudyke's gorgeous grove on the 4th inst.
WHERE, oh where, are the Dan Bryant Minstrels.
THE Journal is concerned about an epitaph. 'Tis too bad.
TONY PASTOR & Co., at the Opera House, to-morrow evening.
JUDGE ROACH, of Indianapolis, spent yesterday in this city on legal business.
JOHN C. SHORT, banker and capitalist, Danville, Illinois, was in town last evening-
WORK is progressing at a lively rate on the Cincinnati & Terre Haute Railroad.
TONY PASTOR denies that the luxurious Mrs. Mansfield travels with his troupe.
JOHN E. SIMPSON, Superintendent of the Vandalia Railroad, was in the city yesterday.
WILLIAM FARMER, of the iEtna House, Danville, Illinois, was in town last evening.
THE event of to-day is the interesting commencement exercises at St. Mary's of the Woods educational institute.
THE Hon. O. P. Morton, is announced by his organ, at Indianapolis, to speak in this city, Wednesday, July 3d, at night.
THE Misses McGregor, Thompson and Tuell have returned from college, to enjoy at their pleasant homes the cheerful holiday season.
OUR readers will find a very important financial report in our local columns of to-day, from Messrs. Saukey and Royse, pertaining to the county.
THE State Sentinel was mistaken when it stated that President Jones, of the State Normal School, had either resigned or contemplated doing so.
THE orgau did not Jenkensize the Normal School commencement of yesterday, but very modestly coufiued its report to about two-thirds of a column.
WE have a special correspondent at St. Marys to-day, who will furnish us an interesting communication for to-mor-row, on the graduating exercises of the Institute.
TICKETS to Groeudyke's Grove for the 4th of July Soldiers Monumental Association celebration are on sale at Bartlett & Button's Central Bookstore. $1.00 round trip.
THE Journal insinuates that Voorhees has in his possession a copy of W. C. DePauw's declination of the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor of the State of Indiana.
PROVIDENCE Hospital dedicatory exer cises on Sunday will be extremely interesting. The Em mett Guards of Indianapolis, and people from all parts of the country will be present.
THE Indianapolis police force excurse to this city on the 10th of Juljfr They have already chartered ten care of the Vandalia at $45 per car. They w|H pic-
Water Works.
We learn from Mr. John S. Beach, President of the Terre Haute Water Works Company, that the contract of supplying our city with pure water will probably be let to-day or to-morrow, as negotiations are progressing favorably, and that the system will be in full operation by the first of January, 1873 that this long delay could not be avoided and a perfect system secured. The company has spared no effort or expense in making observations and experiments with the various systems in use, wishing to secure the be3t and most improved that could be had anywhere at any price. They will probably decide on the Holly plan, improved on that in operation in Dayton, Ohio, and in Indianapolis and Evansville in our own State.
This will be gratifying intelligence to a parched populace, and we must confess that it gratifies us exceedingly to make the announcement.
JUDICIAL REFORM.—A committee of the members of the Bar of Indiana, has been appointed to consider needed Judicial reforms. Of the committee, chief Justice Buskirk is Chairman
First District—Asa Ijrlehart, Evansville Thos. It. Cobb, Vincennes. Second District—Geo. V. Howk, New Albany W. K. Marshall, Seymour.
Third District—F. Stansifer, Columbus Jas. Garvin, Greensburfr. Fourth District—J. P. Siddall, Richmond K. M. Hord, Shelbyville.
Fifth District—W. R. Harrison, Martinsville Jas. L. Mitchell, Indianapolis. Sixth District—Wm. Mack, Terre Haute Geo. W. Friedly, Bedford.
Seventh District—P. S. Kennedy, Crawfordsville J. R. Coffroth, LaFayette. Eighth District—David Moss, Noblesville John U. Pettit, Wabash.
Ninth District—Robert S. Taylor, Fort Wayne Walter March, Mnncie. Tenth District—W. M. Mitchell, Goshen Jas. I. Best, Waterloo, DeKalk county.
Eleventh District—A. L. Osborn, LaDorte Alfred Reynolds, Monticello. At Large—R.C. Gregory, LaFayette J. T. Elliott. Newcastle James Frazier, Goshen J. W. Gordon, Indianapolis.
WE see by our Council Bluffs (Iowa) exchanges that Dr. Payne, and the editor of the C. B. Times, are having a lively time of it. The editor assulted the Doctor with his little pen in his paper the Doctor retaliated by drawing his revolver on the pencil driver, but did not use it. Instead, he got into Court, and had a hard time of getting bail. Where the difference will end, remaius yet to be seeu. Dr. Payne is an itinerant quack, like unto those who afflict this town occasionally, and, if we mistake not, carry away much money from their patients that it would be to the interest of the patient, they steal instead of give treatment in return. We think it the duty of an editor to denounce such frauds, and take the consequences.
THE Pythian Knights of this city, at their regular semi-annual election of officers, made the following selections, at their meeting in Gilbert's Block night before last, which was crowded out from yesterday's
is3ue
Worthy Chancellor—T. H. Riddle. Vice Chancellor—John Serbert. Representative—Clias. E. Lighlnor. The Lodge, though young, is in a very flourishing condition, there being some fifty members, who evince the liveliest interest in the brotherly order. The Order is a worthy one and is composed of worthy gentlemen, who are very anxious to have others join them. Those desiring to do so, by calling on either of the above named gentlemen, can be accommodated.
SPRINGFIELD, Illinois, is taking vigorous measures to prevent the smallpox from gaining a foothold in that city. Among other things would it not be well for them to establish "quarantine" relations with Terre Haute, as the press there seem to think we have it so severely here. Right here, let us assure the Springfield Journal that the contagion has beeu crushed out that there are but fourteen cases in or near.the city, and they are so closely guarded that there is not a probability of a further spread of the loathsome disease. At the same time we would advise Springfield to persevere in taking measures to prevent the disease getting a start, as we should have had no difficulty with it had the city authorities "taken time by the forelock."
TONY PASTOR and his combination will be in the city to-morrow afternoon, and give one entertainment in the evening. We don't know whether their entertainment will be good or not. Judging by the pretended performance of the troupe in this city last fall, we should judge not. Some said that company was a bogus one, and that Tony was not with it at all. We did not kuow how true that was and we do not know now. If it be true that it really was Tony, then we have no faith in Tony giving a good performance. The best way for our readers to know whether Tony and his show is a success, is to go and see.
AT the annual meeting of the stockholders of the Terre Haute Gas Light Compauy, held to-day, the following named gentlemen were elected directors and officers for the ensuing year
Directors—Wm. B. Warren, D. W. Minshall, A. McGregor, F. Nippert, Wm. Riley McKecu, Demas Detning, George Rugan.
President—Wm. B. Warren. Treasurer—Wm. Riley McKeen. Secretary and Superintendent—George Rugan.
HON. O. P. MORTON and Gen. Hunter will be in this city on the afternoon of July 3d, and will be guests of L. A. Burnett, Esq. It is intended to give them a serenade, and perhaps they will respond with a speech. It has been thought best to have no speaking on that evening at the wigwam, as folks will want to take a good rest preparatory to a ride to Groendyke's Grove on the Fourth. Everybody and everybody's wife and sweet heart are going.
QUITE a number of the property owners along the south side of Main street, between Sixth and Fifth, are extending their buildings far back in the rear. Messrs Forster & Fahnley have the rear extension of their building completed. Katzenbach has commenced work on hi?, and T. H. Riddle will follow suit shortly, we understand. Thus do we like to see our business men extending their business.
SCHOOL commencements are the order nighoat the country.
OUR local notice columns contain a notice calling together the survivors of the old and gallant Fourteenth Indiana Volunteers, who served in the late war, and who reside in this part of the country. The meeting is called for Thursday evening of this week, and will be held at the Council Chamber. The object of the call is to make arrangements for a grand reunion. This is commendable, and we hope the enterprise will not fail.
J. S. ARMSTRONG, of |Rome, New York, representing the Seneca Falls "Star Yeast Company," is in the city canvassing for the responsible manufactory which he represents. The yeast is highly recommended by our exchauges from Indianapolis and elsewhere. No well regulated household will do without the article after giving it a fair trial. Sold by all grocers.
MARTIN, at the Saving's Bank, is just twenty-oae to-day. His first vote will be cast for Greeley. He is giving orders on Baker soda fountain to callers.
Notice.—The members of the old 14th Indiana Regiment living in this city and vicinity are requested to attend a meeting at the Council Chamber on Thursday evening at 8 o'clock, for the purpose of consulting about holding a reunion of the remnaut of the old regiment. 26il2
A Card.—A preliminary meeting of the boss bricklayers of Terre Haute was held at the Council Chamber on Saturday evening with a view to effecting a permanent association to secure uniformity in the measurement of work. At that time a committee was appointed to report a plan of organization. All boss bricklayers are iuvited to meet at the Council Chamber this (Wednesday) evening, at 8 o'clock, to hear the report of that committee, and take such action as may be deemed expedient.

I would recommend all who want reliable and prompt payments insurance to insure with Havens & Faris in the Old Phoenix. 25d3 JOHN KIELY.
Insurance.—The Mutual Life Insurance Company of Chicago is a Western company now in its eighth year, hence the oldest company organized under the laws of the State of Illinois. It has ample assets, well and properly invested, does its business on the mutual plan for cash only, and loans its money in this vicinity. From the well-known energy and business capacity of its officers and managers, it bids fair to soon become the largest company in the country. J. H. Douglass is General Agent, office corner of Third and Ohio streets.
Jewett's Palace Refrigerators.—We still have a few of these celebrated Refrigerators on hand that we ill sell at cost, to close out. The reputation of the maker is too well known in this section for comment. SMITH & WHEELER, 19dlw 150 Main street.
