FRANK R. MIKSCH, of thie Chicago Daily News, was in the city yesterday, and, like Stephens, of the New York Herald, failed to find the Altitudinous Sycamore in or about his accustomed haunts. This was sad.
TRERE probably never were so many pentiemen desirous of being Sheriff of this great and prosperous county as now—almost as many as want to be be Clerk. There will be some awful "sore heads" after all the conventions!

THE news from our exchanges daily points to the faict that the feeling for Greely is increasing. The tide is rising. The converts to the reform movement are not from the "drill-sergeants" of party organization^ but frota the thinking class of the people, Rjen who have a higher stake than the pursitft.of an office in their politics. ThefWeoda^rf Grefeley place their preference lor him on lofty •and patriotic grounds.

Those Resolutions.
We feel satisfied that the Mayor, Council Board of Health, and the several citizens who met at the Council Chamber yesterday, took the action most satisfactory to a majority of the people of this city and the best that could have been taken under the circumstances. The following resolutions were drafted, presented and passed:
Resolved, That the Mayor and Board of Health be granted full power to act in preventing the spread of smallpox, and that they are authorized to employ physicians ana erect buildings. They are also authorized to employ nurses and furnish necessary comforts to persons having this disease who do not desire to go to the pest house. ....
Jte^o'ved, That the Board of Health is ordered to attend to the duties prescribed in ordinances passed February 20, 1854, and March 10,187 and is furthermore instructed to fence in, when practicable, and mark in a plain manner, and to place guard over all houses infected with contagious diseases.
Besolved, That the Mayor make proclamation to the effect that no person will be forcibly removed to the hospital, and request information to be sent in promptly concerning all cases of smallpox.
This proclamation appeared in our columns yesterday and can be found there to-day.
We cannot see what better course cat) b^ pursued than this, considering that at present we have no hospital or pest hour-e fit to place ladies in. Where is there a man in this community who would be willing that his wife, mother, sister or daughter should be placed in a pest house, of little or no accommodations?
We are painfully aware of the fact that it is a difficult matter to prevent the spread of the infectious disease. Under the above resolutions and the proclamation issued by His Honor, the Mayor and Board of Health now have full power to act in the premises, and we have CONFIDENCE that they will do the best that can be done under the circumstances by any man or set of men.
The fact of the mater is that this pest house question should have been disposed of by the erection of such a building long since. That such action has never been taken hitherto is the misfortune of the city and the fault of the officials of the city and county in the past.
Now, the best that can be done we think, can be accomplished under the above resolutions. swill be seen by a careful reading of them, the Mayor and Board of Health have the power to take such action as they may think best.

THE New York Tribune says: We learn that Mr. Joseph Jefferson, who was engaged to appear this week in Philadelphia, has been obliged to decline on account of a threatened blindness. The loss of sight in one eye, if not in both, is threatened, but the oculists under whose care he has placed himself hafb wellfounded hopes of bis recovery.
From a private dispatch from the son of the great artist to T. B. Glessing, of Indianapolis, published in the Eveuing News of yesterday, we learn that Mr. Jefferson is better that an operation had been performed on his optical nerve, which relieved him iu a great measure. This news will be received with interest by Mr. Jefferson's many admirers in this city and community. The injury is said to have been caused by the stage lights.
Misterions Disappearance.
Charles Taylor, a conductor on the Vandalia Railroad, who lives on Mulberry street, between Eleventh and Twelfth, disappeared from his home last Tuesday night, since which time nothing has been heard of him. It was at first supposed that he went to St. Louis with the Germans, but it has since been found that be was seen on the street after the excursion train had left. He had just received his monthly wages, and fears of foul play are entertained. Any information of his whereabouts will be thankfully received.
A YOUNG lawyer took a little bill out to the eastern part of the city yesterday, for the purpose of collecting the Same. The lady of the house triumphant'y shook a red flannel unmentionable at the y. 1., and jeeringly informed him that they had small-pox in the family, which would oftset his small claim. The y. 1. returned to his office on Ohio street iu just one minute and three seconds, minus the amount of the account.
BE it said to the honor of Baltimore justice, the Grand Jury of that city has found an indictment against the Rev. Dr. Huston, the minister of theM. E. Church, South, who was recently tried before an ecclesiastical court on serious charges, and acquitted. Let the law take its course now, and all will yet be well— except the Rev. fraud himself.
WE learn from the Journal that the Democrats of Lost Creek township held* their convention yesterday, and selected the following delegates to attend the County dominating Con vention: M. L. Collins, J. M. Slater, John Hyssong, Wm. Gray and J. H. York. The meeting gave so iastjruotioDSto tbe delegated,
