EDITORIAL CORRESPONDENCE.

Evansrille, Terre Haute, and Politics. EVANSVILLE, May 29,1872. The other day we took a drive with Mr. Henning, behind his fast trotter "Billy," all around and through thiacity, and were astonished at the largeamount of improvements apparent everywhere. Upon every street a great many houses are In the course of erection. Stor® rooms, dwellings, churches,

D»MK5

build

ings, large manufacturing establishments, and other houses necessary to be built, are progressing to completion on every side. The ring of the trowel and the noise of the hammer are beard all around. We doubt there is any city in the Stute improving faster, and with a more substantial growth. Conceded by all to be the first commercial point in the State, it is fast attaining such proportions that we would not be surprised if it would soon be the firsi c|ty in:tbeState*. Possessing but few railaoad advantages still it has the Ohio river, which is of as much advantage to it as a dozen railroads. Not favorably situated as to location, yet the energy and determination of its citizens will, in time, beautify it, so that it will possess as man* attractions as perhaps any other city in the State. There is much wealth here, and it is in the hands of men who possess it to use it, and who use it not only to add the cent per cent., but to advance the general good. They have here long lines of street railroad, that pay have water works, which are just beginning to keep the streets iree of dust and* thW houses and yards clean and beautiful and their system of sewerage is on a magnificent ecale, and when entirely completed will drain the city perfectly. "What Evansville needs more than any thing else, is the rapid tearing down of many of the business houses that are unsightly masses of bricks and mortar, and bnilding In their stead, houses up to tlie requirements and taste of the times. It has wealth, energy, enterprise and liberality, but it wants taste—tasW in' the architecture of its public and private building*. This, however, will not long be wanting, for all over the country 'ttye rude cabins of our fathers are giving to a superior class of houses, and Evaj)ji^ ville, the rivfti* nt'j* Mws"CJtate, dmwiitg to her a vast trade from a surrounding country, will not remain still in anything that goes to mak^^ thriving ami beautiful cltjr.

POLITICAL.

If the Philadelphia Convention nomTn ates Grant, the elements'will begin to work and if the Baltimore Convention affirms the action of the Cincinnati Con vention, they will blaze xn into publio action. Until the action of both those conventions, men everywhere are loath to take sides.

The Grant men here are delighted with Voorhees. They hug him to their embrace with all the fondness that the parental ancestor received back the wandering youth who had been filling his belly with the husks the swine would not eat. They love Daniel, and one of them told us the other day that be did not know which was the greatest renegade, Voorhees or ourself.

1

But wbdt W

stranger, they dislike us, about in the same degree that they like Voorhees. By the way, it has just oocurred to us that there should be a frflow-feellng tweeu V. and ourself, for we are just now about in the same political ^oat,. with this slight difference, we are going in the direction which leads to a splendid trii umph, while he is going to the d—1. However, we are not certain but we ought very much to admire Voorhees, and would, were it not for the feci that he is givlug his influence to the Qrapt ad ministration, just at the tYme'wh«n all the honest men of the country ane !eav» ing it on account of its corruption and ineftieWncy. All the virtue there is in the et urage of such an act, is wholly qbscured*by tbte want of judgment which it reveals.

CALIFORNIA VINEGAR BITTBKS, a remedy which is making its way into more ftmilies just now than all the other advertised medicines put together. There seems to be no question about the potency of its tonic and alterative properties, while it possesses the great negative recommendation of containing neither alcohol nor mineral poison. That it is a specific for Indigestion, Billiousnesv, Constipation, and many comi laints of nervous origin, we have reason to know and we are assured on good authority that as a general invigoraut, regulating and purifying medicine, it has no equal, It is stated thatits ingredients, (obtained from the wilds of California,) are new to the medical world and its extraordinary effects certainly warrant the coneIuion that it is a compound of agents hitherto uuknown. ACxAI :v YICTORIOUS!

Our recent onslaught upon the Carpet trade caused a decided sensation. We tyave nevjer seen more complete success. Within 24 houreafter we had announced our prices to the public, our Carpet room was crowded with customers, and each week our sales of these goods have continued to increase.

It is the Hit Bird that Flutters!

This accounts for the fluttering amon? our competitors. They sot tlielr backs up at once and rushed into print to tell the people that they had reduced their Carpets to the price of ours. The people answered, "We don't believe you, and even if you have, Foster Brothers compelled you to lower your prices, or you would never have done it. We propose to «ive our patronage to the merchants whose prices are so low that they have never had to reduce them to meet the prices of other stores."

THE "AMBULACE RIDER" BACKED DOWN!

HE MAKES AS" IXOI.ORIOITS FIZZLE!

His "Hand Loom" aud "Family" Carpets Prove to be a Humbug!

Knowing, as we did, that his "Hand Loom" Carpets, for which he was charging $1 40 and $1.50, were ex ictly the goods that were selling at $1.20 and $1.25, and that bis po-called "Family" Carpels at SI.00 were the same as our 85c goods, we submitted to him four distinct challenges ou the subject, which he has not dared to accept.

The brief campaign of the past few weeks has placed us

AT THE HEAD OF THE CARPET TRADE!

WE PROPOSE TO KEEP THE LEAD!

We shall do it by offering to the public only well known brauds of .Carpets, and by always representing our goods to be just what they are. As we shall keep no makes of Carpets to which the manufacturers are ashamed to put their names, it will never become necessary for us to dub any of them "Finger Looms" or "Family Frauds."
