City and Neighborhood.

DON'T shoot the robins. THE Western fever rages. PICNIC squads leave the city almost every day.

SPRING chickens will soon be ripe enough to "pluck

ICED TEA has not yet become popular, on account of the coolness.

THE steam brick yard has not yet been putin operation this season.

GREEN apples and diarrhea will s^oon be prevalent among the boys.

EARLY cherries are gettinn lusciously red, and will be ripe in a few days.

WHOOPING-COUGH prevails to some extent among the children in our city.

THE grape crop in this vicinity promises to be larger this season than for several years past.

M. B. HUDSON is following the example of his neighbor, Judge Grain, and-is putting a new front, or rather a part of one, in his store.

"WEEDS grow wondrous'y fast. At least so think our citiz ens who are cultivating small garden patches.

IN some places that we know of, they fine people for fast driving. A few ease.« of that kind should take place in Terre Haute.

GEO. W. CUMMINGS dropped down from Chicago this morning. He goes to Bloomington this afternoon, and returns to his editorial duties at St. Louis on Saturday.

THE City C«nncil ought to get up a self-8otingr hog ordinance. The present one ain't worth a cent. The hogs have no more regard for it than they have for Sunday.

A COLORED "gennnan" of the ton^orial artist persuasion says that he would sooner vote ftr Jeff. Davis than Horace Greeley. Verily, the spirit of secession is still abroad in the land.

AT the present time, when there is such a demand for mechanics and laboring men of all kinds, there is no excuse for idleness. Loafers are simply such now through pure cussedness.

WE are informed that Mr. Voorhees will use his best endeavors to secure the nomination of Judge Davis at Baltimore. Also, that Mr. V. is not averse to accepting the second place on the ticket.

SEVERAL kilns of brick have already been burned in the different brick ya^ds south of the city, and the work of moulding is being actively pushed forward. The make will be much larger this year than last.

SEVERAL of our ruralistic exchanges announce that salt sprinkled around potato hills will prevent the ravages of the potato bug. This reminds us that a small quantity sprinkled on the tail of birds will enable .yon to catch them.

WE are in receipt of a very fine specimen of printing fmm Foster Brothers' New York Store, Terre Haute. It is a letter head, worked in three colors and a bronze, and was executed at the GAZETTE job rooms. It reflects great, credit on the store, ttie office, and the foremau of their job rooms.—Marsha'I TIerald.

THE scarcity of small houses for rent is still complained of. Now is a good time for enterprising men of capital toerecr them. The investment will pay a good percent., besides conducing to the grow tli

prosperity of our city.

LAST week our' devil had a relapse of the spring fever. He thought that if there would only come a coo!, refreshing shower he would got better. The shower came, but we do not notice any diminution of the symptoms, unless talk of going fishing could be so construed.

WE do not know of a vacant house in the city. Every day we are asked if we know of a house to rent. If our moneyed men would put up tenant bouses, it would accommodate those who desire to settle in our midst, and be a source of profit to them. What say you

THERE is a law prohibiting the tearing pown of posters and hand-bills, which is probably not known to some persons. Thei-e is too much of this thing done in thiscity and vicinity, and it would be well for those who have been in the habit of defacing or tearing down bills, to deny themselves this pleasure in the future or they may come to grief.

PROF. ATWATER and Rev. W. B. Treat, of Bloomington, X.J. Aylsworth, of Fort Wayne, and L. S. Carpenter, of Wabash, are in the city to participate in the Sunday School Institute to beheld in the Christian Chapel, beginning this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Others are expected. There will he an address this evening at 8 o'clock. All are invited.
