says special trains from
various points conveyed Bourbons to this city Saturday.
SEKwhatW. S. Ryce & Co. have to say in their new advertisement to-day. The Buckeye is not to be left behind.
THE Wabash agaiu aspires to the dignity of a river, and boats again glide up and down its serene aud billowless surface.
BEACH'S new building on Main street is progressing rapidly. The stone for the front is furnished by Walter & Eppinghousen.
RIPPETOE has a flue lot of straw berries, and twenty cents a quart is all they cost. Who would go without strawberry shortcake now.
SEATH & HAOER'S new building ii very nearly completed. The stack is up, and it will be all ready for use in a few days. So we go.
STRAW USURIES are becoming quite plentiful in this market. They are now selling at from 20 to 25 cents per quart, and a still further decline may be soon expected.
TOM. GIST has anew sign at the buss office on Main street. It gives the time of the arrival and departure of trains, and is a good thing. Wildy & Poths were the artists.
CHAS. B. ULCKS, agent of the Georgia Slave Troupe Minstrels, is in the city making arrangements for their appearance at the Opera House, May 31st and June 1st. See advertisement.
AN oil well, or skunk taunery, is prayed for by the residents in the vicinity of a slaughter house in the lower part of the city, to disinfect that highly incensed and perfumed country.
PELKRE D'OIGNOX, is the name of one of the new fashionable colors. Translated out of the orginal Greek, and soaked in a washing machine, it means "peel of the onion." Result of public schools.
TOM GIST is out to-day with a new wagon for his own private use- He has a magnificent gray charger attached to it, and it makes but little difference to him whether "Dan." is for Greeley or not.
A HOUSE attached to a wagon labeled "The Weed Sewing Machines" broke loose from his mooring and ran away ou South Second street Saturday afternoon. The horse and wagon were .both slightly injured.
WHY should not the law in regard to hi tolling horses to shade trees, be strf&ly enforced: We have noticed several fiat shade trees in different parts of the city almost ruiued by horses pealing the bark from them. '**L
Yoi'NG ladies aud misses wishing to take part in the exercises of dt-coratiug soldiers' graves will, please report this evening between 4 and 5 o'clock at the ticket office of the Opera House, where tjiey tn»y procure baskets,

Neighborhood.
FINE grqwing weather, this.
THE market is full of luscious strawberries.
THE Utiiou Depot is putting on airs. Lots of new furniture.
.JIM EDMUNDS has anew "tile." It is not a Greeley by a d—d sight.
THE Misses Ceppi give a concert each evening this week at Mozart Hall.
WOOL is coming in lively. Seventy cents was the current rate to-day for tubwashed.
GEO. PALMATER is on the sick list, but the street cars still continue to make regular trips.
Sumner Resorts.
By the close of next month the fashion ables will commence their periodical flight to the different watering places, and the number of Dolly Varden suits fair faces and Saratoga trunks, big enough for a small family to set up house keeping in, which will be seen at the depots, will prove that all the world and his wife, with marriageable daughters, &c.t are about to depart for their happy hunting grounds, by the "Sad Sea Waves," or other localities which ^e ton have voted to be "the thing."
A summer tour through the noted resorts, affords much pleasure to the student of human nature. He sees it there under the varied aspects as his uttermost wish can compass. The contrast is strong, it embraces the statesman and the fashionable belle, the scholar and the dry goods clerk, the fast man and the divine. He hears the policy of the Administration discussed on the one hand, and on the other Niagara, voted fine but tiresome, whilst scientific terms clash with turf slang. In honest truth, however, the attractions presented by these places are very great. Cape May and LongBranch, Newport and Narragansett Pier, are rich in their natural beauties. For the lovers of ocean scenerythe views are grand. The broad expanse of the restless, hearing water, the gleam of the white sails, and the ceaseless roar of the surf, impress the mind with a force greater than can be produced by any work of art.
The display of wealth is also an attractive feature. Fine horses, in single, double, tandem, and four-in-hand harness, dash by, drawingelegant carriages, filled with light hearted men and women. Strains of rich music from the bands at the hotels float on the air, and in the evening the flash of lights and the ring of voices from the ball rooms, show that all goes "merry as a marriage bell."
A quieter spot is Martha's Vineyard, save when, in August of each year, the great Methodist camp-nieeting gathers there. At other times the place is giveh up to those who gather for actual rest and recreation. A small town of beautiful cottages has sprung up within a few years. The light architecture of the Swiss aud Italian styles, predominate, but all built for combined elegat?ce and comfort. Here are to be found all tho natural advantages of the sea-side— splendid view, pure fresh air, with fine fishing and bathing. The yachts of the different squadrons come in and drop anchor for awhile, then spread their cauvass again and dash away like swiftwinged sea-birds. Here, as the evening closes, we catch every few seconds the flash lrom the Freshnell light at Gay Head, carrying assurance of safety far over the waters to homeward bound mariners, and through the darkness the voices of the great deep come borne on the night breeze. Far different are the inland resorts. Saratoga, perhaps best known of any, is dry and sandy. Here, however, congregate still with every year hundreds of persous, some who go as invalids to drink the water, others because others go, and still another class for the pleasures of the race meetings.
The White Mountains, too, will ever continue to attract their share of pleas-ure-seekers. Those who have once climbed the rugged sides of Mt. Washington, and gazed from its summit upon the magnificent view which opens on all sides will gladly return again at some later day to renew their happiness.
Upon the brink of Niagara the spectator stands entranced. The thunder of the great fall flfls the air, but does not drown the voice of the spirit which speaks within him. Looking above the fall to where the wild water is tossing madly, he sees it grow smoother and smoother, till in one glass-like sheet it pours over the verge into the abyss be* low. Peering down into those depths from which the spray rises ever like a mist, he seems to look into another world, such a one as the ancients peopled with their conception of the immortals.
Language is too weak for the portrayal of the scene. Words can convey no adequate idea of Niagara. It must be seen to be understood and appreciated, i•••.••
Niagara Is a nice place to get rid of money. It is full of feathered fans with stuffed birds in the middle of them, ala: baster whistles, squaws, bead moccasins, canes cut of the falls, eaglets stuffed with straw, owls chock tull of bay, little birds that wish they were alive, two cents' worth of ice cream for a quarter of a dollar, and such like.
ENCOURAGE men to come and locate with us, especially the worthy and active, whether they have capital or not. Those who have means will purchase lots, build manufactories and houses, and give employment to labor. Stimulate every legitimate enterprise by giving it proper encouragement or by uuiting our industry aud capital in the cause. The importance of our people spending their money at home is great. There is a not a quicker or surer way to build up a City than to encourage home business. Home arcbitects*shouId plan our buildiugs, and home mechanics do the work. Encourage our own manufacturers by purchasing what they make that we may need. By this means all will he benefitted and our town will grow into importance. Such a course will enhance the value and demand for houses and land. Let every man cultivate a public spirit, and talk less than he works. Help your neighbor. If he is in danger of breaking down, prop him up in some way iustead of kicking him under—his talents and labor are worth something to the community. Encourage our citizens and local authorities in making public improvements, and stimulate every individual ente**prise. If every citizen would lend a helping hand in furthering public improvements of every kind our city need not fear the rivalry of neighboring towns. But if there is a disposition on the part of those men, who have pecuniary interest at stake, to hold back and discourage every enterprise that may be inaugurated, then we may expect to be totally annihilated by our rivals. There In a number of this c'a in cor city who show no disposition whatever ttimssist in makingTerre Haute one of the principal, if not the leading town, in the Stale.
