IMPORTANT RAILROAD MATTERS.
Lease of the Rockville Divlslon of the E. & C. R. R. to the Logansport, Crawfordsville & Southwestern Railroad Company.
And of the Springfield, Illinois Southeastern by the Indianapolis & St. Louis R. R.
A few days since we announced a meeting of leading railroad officials in this city, but at that time were not at liberty to announce the business transacted as it was not fully consummated and ready to go before the public through the press. Since writing that notice the following has been made public: The Logansport, Crawfordsville & South-
Crawfordsville & South
eastern by managing Director Cutter and President Lee made a proposition to the Evansville & Crawfordsville Company, represented by President Ingle, Director McKeen and Superintendent Pierson, to lease the Rockville Division of the E. & C. R. R. for the purpose of giving the said L., C. & S. W. R. R. connection with Terre Haute direct, the lease to extend through a numbers of years.
The proposition was accepted with the understanding that it should be submitted to the Board of Directors of each of the companies contracting, which decision shall be final.
The arrangement gives the lessees the right to the use of the depot, grounds and conveniences of the lessors in the city of Terre Haute during the term of the lease. This arrangement is to go into operation immediately, subject to the action of the Board of Directors as above stated.
We further learn that the Logansport, Crawfordsville & Southwestern Railroad is now constructed and in operation beyond Rockville, some sixty miles, and that the remaining distance is but about fifteen miles to the northeastern terminus of the line as at present contemplated and rfnder contract.
The portion yet unfinished is about ready for the iron, and will doubtless be finished inside of five or six weeks, when direct through communication will be consummated from Logansport to Terre Haute, and indirect communication established with the lakes and the lake shore cities of Toledo, Detroit and others, with all the intermediate places along the line of the road and its many connections. W. R. Cutler, Esq., of Ohio, has had immediate charge of the construction of this new line, which, when ably advised and seconded by President Lee, has almost completed one of the most important new lines connecting with this city, giving us direct communication with a rich agricultural region, dotted over with live cities and towns.
The other important movement we understand to be the leasing of the Springfield Illinois & Southwestern by the Bee Line, in the interest of the Indianapolis &St. Louis, itself a connection the I. & St. L. at Pana, and runs through Springfield to Beardstown, on the Illinois river, is a splendid road fully equiped and passing through the most productive region of the great and and growing Prairie State.
Under the new management, we have no doubt that this connection will be of vast more importance to the business and traveling public than heretofore.
By this route, Springfield, Illinois, is but seven hours ride from this city, and less than ten from Indianapolis, there being no change of cars or stoppage of trains but for a few minutes.
We are gratified to make these announcements for it is an evidence of the fast growing importance of out beauteous city of Terre Haute, which now has grander prospects for becoming a railroad centre than any city of like population on the continent.
The Groendyke Grove Picnic. Pursuant to previous announcement, the Sunday schools of Centenary and Asbury churches, left the city in ten well filled and handsome coaches of the Terre Haute & Chicago Railroad, bound to Groendyke's Grove, forty miles above this city, in Vermillion county, fully armed and equipped for a day of pleasurable pastime fcway from the turmoil of business and dust of the city. Upon reaching the locality known as Groendyke's Grove, Mr. G., the gentlemanly proprietor was there on horseback to greet them, which he did right royally, telling them that they were welcome, thrice welcome «to his hospitality to throw down his fences wherever they would, and he would have men tore-ad-just it.
The elegant coaches were unloaded of their precious living freight by eleven o'clock, and in a short time the beautiful and gorgeous grove was almost animated by the picnicers, who scattered hither and thither through its welcome shades. The grounds are of the handsomest to be found anywhere, consisting of 180 acres, adjoining the railroad track. Certainly there is not a more favorable locality in which to hold a picnic in this part of the State.
The excursionists during the day were joined by parties from Eugene, Newport and other places, each of which would have furnished a large delegation had the weather been propitious and the picnic had occurred as first advertised.
The day was spent in singing, base balling, croquetiug, courting, drinking— lemonade and water. A good time was had and duly appreciated by all, who united in pronouncing it one of the most enjoyable occasions of their lives.
Just prior to the departure of the excursion party, the following resolutions were offered and unanioqously adopted by acclamation.
Resolved,
That Centenary and Asbury
Sunday schools, and their friends, for the free use of this most beautiful grove, tender to Mr. Samuel Groendyke, the proprietor, our most hearty thanks, and we recommend it, in the highest terms, to all schools and parties in quest of a lovely grove for picnic purposes.
Resolved, That for the train, given us at very favorable terms, aud for many kindnesses and courtesies shown us, we proffer our sincere thanks to President Collett, Superintendent, Nesbitt and their employes.
The party then repaired fo the coaches, and were soon safely landed at the Union Depot, and th« most of them reached their homes in time to avoid a soaking rain.
BASE BALL caps are sought this season by a few enthusiastic and faithful worshippers at the shrine of our Rational .game,

Sodden Death.
Mrs John Clancy, wife of the well known paralytic expressman in the employ ofHulman ACox, was stricken with paralysis about five o'clock last afternoon, and died in about fifteen minutes. No person was at the house at the time of the sad occurrence, we learn, but some neighbors had been there just previous to her discovery in a dying condition. Deceased resided on South Second street with her husband, and was about fifty years of age at the time of her demise.
