Oar Position.

A gentleman of this city remarked to us the other day that he thought we, and most of the Democrats of the city and county, were rather hasty in urging upon

the su pporting the tic* cinnati. He

Democratic party the necessity of ket nominated at Cinthought we ought to "wait until we could communicate with the prominent men of the party," our Congressmen, State officers and others, before we committed ourselves.

This is not a question for these men to decide. This is a time for the people to act, and dictate the course for the leaders to pursue. We have been governed by the professional politicians too long, and their government has resulted in continuous defeat, year after year. We must confess that we are tired of such leadership, and feel disposed to urge the politicians and office-holders to stand back for a time.

What more do our Congressmen know concerning the sentimeuts and wishes of their constituents than do we and the Democratic press of the country? We speak specially of our own Congressman, aud have the best evidence for saying that he has not attempted, since he has been in Washington, to ascertain the views of his constituents in this county in regard to the Liberal movement. If he has, we have been unable to discover it from any letters he has written to us, or to any Democrat of this county. He has been decidedly non-committal in regard to his own opinions. Congressmen are too far removed from their constituents to understand fully their feelings on political questions of recent origin, aud we do not think that we should be governed by their views at alf. Let the masses of the Democratic party act once for themselves, and show the leaders that they are intelligent men, who appreciate the situation, and are capable of ing for themselves. hy should we throw away the opportunity now presensed to us of driving corruptionists from the high places, in order to satify the personal feelings of men whom we have made what they are? We can very readily displace them and confer the honors they have worn so long on men who are every ready to commit themselves on all public questions, aud willing to make sacrifices in order to obtain a more honest administration of governmental aflairs.

We speak our sentiments, and believe (hat in the cool moments of reason that every Democrat in Knox county will endorse what we say. We should not await the action of the Democratic Convention before daring to express our sentimeuts— should speak out boldly and indicate to the gentlemen who will compose the National Convention what the people demand of them. Then, when that convention decides upon the policy best to pursue, all good Democrats should acquiesce in that decision.

This is no time for vascillation. The times demand that every man should, without fear or hesitation, avow his sentiments aud defend them at every hazard. This is our position, and we care not whether it accords with that of the Congressmen and politicians or not. We apprehend that' the masses of the Democracy are more deeply concerned in the overthrow of the corrupt dynasty now in power tiian are those leaders who rely ou big ]&mocratic majorities in their own local districts to perpetuate them in office.— Vincennes Sun.

A Private Letter Published with Geii. Comb's Consent. MY DEAR SIR: YOU will remember our conversation about the Cincinnati Convention and its probable nominee. I thought it would be Adams, the 9on and grandson of a President, and should have voted for him with much pleasure but the nomination of Greeley was inspiration, and he will sweep the country like a tornado. Adams would have oaptured the educated men of intellect aud principle, especially in the cities and towns but Greeley will not only get their votes, but he will strike the laboring masses, educated and uneducated, for he is one of them. We shall have a repetition of the storm of 1840, which I helped to raise, as you may remember, and I will blow a blast or two, old as I am, for the poor printer boy—the Second Franklin.

I believe he will' carry every former slave State, as well as New York, Pennsylvania, and part of New Eugland, to say nothing of the great Northwest and the Pacific frontier. He is exactly the reverse of Graut.

First, he is well qualified, and understands what statesmanship means. Second, he is kind-hearted aud gentle as a woman—uurevengeful aud geuerous to his opponents.

Third, he is a sober man—always has been—not a reformed or reformed drunkard.

Fourth, he is an honest man, uot an office seller or receiver of all sorts of gifts, or partner in all manner of villainous rings to pluuder the public treasury.

Yours truly, LESLIE COMBS. LEXINGTON, KY., May 5,1872. THE London Times, iu peaking llie Gra

Sresentatiouasofsays

ofthe

Miss Nellie Grant to

Hieen Victoria, the event is not so remarkable it would have been in the last generation, "for Royal personages now go freely on their travels." There must be great joy at the White House. Master Fre^l has been shouted over by the lazzaroni of Italy as The Prince," and Miss Nellie has been called a royal personage in the London Times. Who cares for Cincinnati now?

Editorial Notices are so common that it is almost impossible for an editor to express his honest opinion of any article without being suspected of interested motives. This fact, however, shall not deter us from saying what we think of a new addition to the Materia Medica to which our attention has been recently directed. We refer to DR. J. WALKER'S CALIFORNIA VINEGAR BITTERS, a remedy which is making its way into more families just now than all the other advertised medicines put together. There seems to be no question about the potency of its tonic and alterative properties, while it possesses the great negative recommendation of containing neither alcohol nor mineral poison. That it is a specific for Indigestion, Billiousness, Constipation, and many complaints of nervous origin, we have reason to know and we are assured on good authority that as a general invigorant, regulating and purifying medicine, it has no equal, It is stated that its ingredients, (obtained from the wilds of California,) are new to the medical world and its extraordinary effects certainly warrant the conclusion that it is a compound of agents hitherto unknown. If popularity is any criterion, there can be no doubt of the efficiency of of the VINEGA'R BITTERS, for the sale of the article is immense and continually increasing.

A Sad Falling Out.—It is indeed a sad falling out when, after years of the closest intimacy, the hair parts company with the head. Fortunately the lamen^ table separation may be easily prevented and the twain more closely uuited than ever by a timely and systematic use of LYON'S KATHAIRON, the most potent invigorant of the hair aud promoter of its growth and beauty known to modern pharmacy. .It completely obviates the dry and parched condition of the roots of the hair, which is preliminary to its coming out, by supplying the precise degree of moisture requisite to its preservation in a healthy state. It is the only true dissolvent and evaporant of dandruff and other impurities of the scalp, whose presence is injurious to the hair. Asa beautifier of the head the Kathairon has no equal. It not only increases the quantity of the hair, but improves its quality immediately, imparting a lustrous appearance and silky texture which are exceedingly attractive.

The Platform of the Liberal Repubiicaii Reform Party. The Administration now in power has rendered itself guilty of a wanton disregardof the laws of the land and of powers not granted by the Constitution.

It has acted as if the laws had binding force only for those who are governed, and not for those who govern. It has thus struck a blow at the fundamental principles of constitutional government and the liberties of the citizens.

The President of the United States has openly used the powers and opportunities of his high office for the promotion of personal ends.

He has kept notoriously corrupt and unworthy men in places of power "and responsibility, to the detriment of the public interest.

He has used the public service of the government as a machinery of corruption and personal influence, and interfered with tyranical arrogance, in the political affairs of States and municipalities.

He has rewarded with influential and lucrative offices, men who had acquired his favor by valuable presents, thus stimulating the demoralization of our political life by his conspicuous example.

He has shown himself deplorably unequal to the tasks imposed upon him by the necessities of the country, and culpably careless of the responsibility of his high office.

The partisans of the administration, assuming to be the Republican party and controlling its organization, have attempted to justify such wrongs and palliate such abuses to the end of maintaining partisan ascendancy.

They have stood in the way of necessary investigations aud indispensable reorm, pretending that no serious fault could be found with the present admiuistratiou of public affairs.

Thus seeking to blind the eyes of the people. They have kept alive the passious and resentments of the late civil war, to use them for their own^.dvautage.

They have resorted to arbitrary measures in direct conflict with the organic law, instead of appealing to the better instincts and the latent patriotism of the Southern people by restoring to them those rights, the enjoyment of which is indispensable for a successful administration of their local affairs, aud would tend to move a patriotic and hopeful national feeling.

They have degraded themselves and the name of their party, once justly entitled to the confidence of the nation, by a base sycophancy to the dispencer of executive power patronage unworthy of Republican freemen, they have sought silence 'the voice of just criticism, and stifle the moral sense of the people and to subjugate public opinion by tyrannical party discipline.

They are striving to maintain themselves in authority for selfish ends, by an unscrupulous use of the power which rightfully belongs to the people, and should be employed only in the service of the country.

Believing that an organization thus led and controlled can no longer be of service to the best interests of the republic, we have resolved to make an independent appeal to the sober judgment conscience and patriotism of the American people.

We, the Liberal Republicans of the United States, in National Convention assembled at Cincinnati, proclaim the principles as essential to a just government 1. We recognize the equality of all before the law, and hold that it is the duty of the Government in its dealings with the people to mete out equal and exact justice to all, of whatever nativity'race, color or persuation, religious or political. 2. We pledge ourselves to maintain the Union of these States, emancipation and enfranchisement, aud to oppose any reopening of the questions settled by the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Ameudmentsof the Constitution. 3. We demand the immediate and absolute removal of all disabilities imposed on account of the rebellion, which was finally subdued seven years ago, believing that universal amnesty will result iu complete pacification in all sections of the country. 4. That local self-government, with impartial suffrage will guard the rights of all citizens more securely than any centralized power. The public welfare requires the supremacy of the civil over the military authority aud the freedom of person under the protection of the habeas corpus. We demand for the individual

the largest liberty contistent with public order, for the State self-government, and for the nation a return to the method of peace and the constitutional limitations of power. 5. The civil service of the Government has become a mere instrument of partisan tyranny and personal ambition and an object of selfish greed. It is a scandal and reproach on free institutions, and breeds demoralization, dangerous to the prosperity of Republican government. 6. We therefore regard a thorough reform of the civil service as one of the most pressing necessities of the hour that honesty, capacity and fidelity constitute the only' valid claims to public employment thatotfices of the Govern-* ment cease to be a matter of arbitrary favoritism and patronage, and that public stations become again a post of honor. To this end it is imperatively required that no President shall be a candidate for re-election. 7. We demand a system of Federal taxation which shall not unnecessarily in terfere with the industry of the people, aftd which fehaU provide the means necegsary to pay jthe expenses of ^he Gov-

ernment economically administered, the pensions, the interest on the public debt and a moderate annual reduction of the principal thereof and recognizing that there are in our midst, honest but irreconcilable differences of opinion with regard to the respective systems of protection and free trade, we remit the dis» cussion of the subject to the people in their Congressional Districts, and the decision of Congress thereon wholly free of executive iuterference or dictation. 8. The public credit must be sacredly mantained, and we denounce repudiation in every form and guise. 9. A speedy return to specie payment is demanded alike by the highest consid erations of cmmercial morality and hon est government. 10. We remember with gratitude the heroism and sacrifices of the soldiers and sailors of the Republic, and no act of ours shall ever detract from their justly earned fame for the full rewards of their patriot ism. 11. We are opposed to all further grants of lauds to railroads or other corporations. The public domain should beheld sacred to actual settlers. 12. We hold that it is the duty of the Government, in its intercourse with for eign nations, to cultivate the friendships of peace, by treating with all on fair and equal terms, regardiug it alike dishonorable either to demand what is not right or to submit to what is wrong. 13. For the promotion and success of these vital principles and the support of the candidates nominated by this Convention we invite and cordially welcome the cooperation of all patriotic citizens with out regard to previous political affiliation

Vinegar Bitters are not a vile Fancy Drink Made of Poor Ram, Whisky, Proof Spirits and Refuse Liquors doctored, spiced and sw.eetened to please the taste, called ^'Tonics," "Appetizers," "Restorers,"' Ac., that lead the tippler on to drunkenness and ruin, but are a true Medicine, madefrom the Native Roots and Herbs of California, free from all Alcoholie Stimnlants. They are the GREAT ItLOOD PURIFIER and A LIFE GIVING PRINCIPLE, a perfect Renovator and Invigorator ol the System, carrying off all poisonous matter and restoring the blood to a healthy condition. No person can take these Bitters according to directions and remain long unwell, provided their bones are not destroyed by mineral poison or other means, and the vital organs wasted beyond the point of repair.

They are a gentle Purgative as well as a Tonic, possessing also, the peculiar merit of acting as a powerful agent in relieving Congestion or inflammation of the Liver, and all Ihe Visceral Organs.

FOR FEMALE COMPLAINTS, whetuer in young or old, married or single, at the dawn of womanhood or at the turn of life, these Tonic Bitters have no eqnal.

For Inflammatory and Chronic Rheumatism and Gont, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Billions, Remittent and Intermittent Fevers, Diseases of the Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder, these Bitters have been most successful. Snch Diseases are caused by Vitiated Blood.-which is generally produced uy derangement of the Digestive Organs.

DYSPEPSIA OR INDIGESTION Headache.Pain in the Whoolders, Coughs, Tightness of the Chest, Dizziness, Sour Eructations of the Stomach, Bad taste in the Mouth, Billions Attacks, Palpitation of the Heart, Infiamation of the Lungs, Pain in the region of the Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symptoms, are the oftfeprings of Dyspepsia.

They invigorate the Stomach and stimulate the torpid liver and bowels, which render them of unequalled efficacy in cleansing the blood of all impurities, and imparting new life and vigor to the whole system.

FOR SKIN DISEASES, Eruptions. Tetter, Salt Rheum, Blotches, Spots, Pimples, Pustules, Boils, Carbuncles, Ring Worms, Scald Head, Sore Eyes, Eryslplas, Itch, Scurfe, Discolorations of the Skin, Humors and Diseases of the Skin, of whatever name or nature, are literally dug up and carried out. of the system in a short time by the use of these Bitters. One bottle in such cases will convince the most incredulous of the curative effect

Cleanse the Vitiated blood whenever yon find its impurities bursting through the skin in Pimples, Eruptions or Sores, cleanse it when you find it oostructed and sluggish in the veins: cleanse it when it is foul, and your feelings will tell yon when. Keep the blood pure and .the health of the system will follow.

PIN, TAPE, and other WORMS, lurking in the system of so many thousands, are effectually destroyed and removed. For full directions, read carefully the circular around each bottlejprinted in four languages—English, German, French and8panish.

HAIR VIGOR. AlEB'S

A I I O

For the Renoration of the Hair! The Great Desideratum of the Age!

A dressing which is at once agreeable, healthy, and effectual for preserving the hair. Faded or gray hair is soon restored to its original color and the gloss ana freshness of youth. Thin hair is thick ened, falling hair checked, and baldness often, though not always, cured by its use. Nothing can restore the hair where the follicles are destroyed, or the glands ftrophied or decayed. But such as remain can be saved for usefulness by this application. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sediment, it will keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from falling ofl and consequently prevent baldness. Free from those deleterious substances which make some preparations dangerous and injurious to the hair, the Vigor (San only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely for a

HAIR DRESSIING,

nothing else can be found so desirable. Containing neither Oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts longer on the hair, giving it a rich glossy lustre and a grateful perfume.
