From tKe Memphis Appeal.

A Southern Democrat on Greeley's Inconsistency. From now until the Presidential election the name of Horace Greeley will be a fool-ball to be kicked about the country by political blackguards. Already calumny is busy with his name. The car-let-bag thieves, like sappers and miners, have shouldered their pickaxes anil spades, and are ransacking the country, turning over every musty record and foul log, with a view of raking up some filthy falsehood to be used against Mr. (jfreeley. Morton, rotten with disease and moral corruption, is groping about knee-deep in the political sewers, hoping to fish up some plausible calumny or petty scandal. But the character of Mr. Greeley cannot be damaged by the slanders of the "bread and butter" politicians. His private character is blameless, pure, and unassailable, and the mountain waves of calumny that surge at his feet will break and return like the waves at the base of a huge rock in the ocean. The little Radical editors all over the country are chirping like spring frogs about Air. Greeley's inconsistency. But this charge, if true, is no crime.

No one cures anything about Mr. Greeley's inconsistency. If he has changed a thousand times, his last change is the most worthy of all. It is a great misfortune for the country that the Administration does not change. Griwit is consistent in everything consistent in his stupidity consistent in his usurpations and despotisms consistent in disregarding the Constitution consistent in favoring centralized despotism consistent in taking gifts from officeseekers consistent in his corruptions consistent in pensioning his poor kin upon the taxpayers, and consistent in his dishonesty and anxiety to obtain wealth by fleecing a tax-ridden people. It is a misfortune for the country that President Grant is so very consistent. The people would gladly welcome a change, for any change would be for the better—none could be worse.

From the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The Indiana Democrats Enthusiastic for Greeley. SULLIVAN, IND., May (».—I am a young Democrat, anil wish to express through the columns of your worthy journal the exact facts as to how the Liberal nominations were received in this section of the State. There can hardly he found a man in the Democratic ranks who will not support the ticket, and there are scores of Republicans who will vote for Greelejr and if the Democratic National Convention will make no nominations, but accept the ticket now before the two parties, but will all vote for Grant should the Democratic Convention nominate candidates and it is my candid opinion that the only way for the Democratic party to be successful is to accept .the Liberal welcome which the Cincinnati Convention has offered, and success will be with us.

To illustrate how enthused the people are over the platform and candidates, I shall say that the people, without any distinction of party, met at the Court House and took a vote for Horace Greeley and B. Gratz Brown, and there wasn't a soul who didn't vote for the said H. (i. and B. G. B. Then there c.une three long and hearty cheers from the whole assembly.

The Democratic majority in "old Sullivan county" is somewhere near thirteen hundred, and the opinion of the nio^t influential men of the town and county is that Sullivan will go from two thousand to two thousand ami five hundred for Greeley and Brown to represent them as President ami Vice President fijr the next lour years and we feel confident that the State will give "the honest old man" such, a support as has never been heard of for any of our former Presidents.

Read the platform over and you will have our united seutiments to a dot. FRANK.

Jt'Nu But TI BOOTH appeared as I.igo in Richmond, Va., the other uight, and in the audience was a smnewh'at unsophisticated individual, who inquired of a gentleman sitting near him, "Is this the play in which a nigger marries a white woman and then chokes her to death?" An appropriate reply wasj-iven. The questioner then rose to leave, remarRing: "Well, then, darned if want to see it. 'Twon't do for old Virginity!"

A Sad Falling Out.—It is indeed a sad falling out when, alter years of the closest intimacy, thebaic parts company with the head.* Fortunately the lamentable separation may be easily prevented and the twain more closely united than ever by a tf$mIy and systematic ue of LYON'S KATHAIKOX, the most potent invlgorantuf the hair and promoter of its growth and beauty known to modern pharmacy. It completely obviates the dry and parched condition of the roots of the hair, which is preliminary to its coming out, by supplying the precise degree of moisture requisite to its preservation in a healthy state. It is the only true dissolvent and evaporautof dandruff and other impurities of the scalp, whose preseuce is injurious to the hair. As a beautifier of the heat! the Kathairon has no equal. It notouly increasealhe quantity of the hair, but improves its quality immediately, imparting a lustrous appearance and silky texture which are Exceedingly attractive.

The Platform of the Liberal Republican

ttZCllt Rfform Party. The Administration now in powerlias rendered itself guilty of a wanton disregard of the laws of the land and of powers not granted by the Constitution.

It has acted as if the laws had binding force only for those who are governed, and not for those who govern. It has thus struck a blow at the fundamental principles of constitutional government and the liberties of the citizens.

The President of the United States has openly used the powers and opportunities of his high office for the promotion of personal ends.

He has kept notoriously corrupt and unworthy men in places of power and responsibility, to the detriment of the public interest.

He has used the public service of the government as a machinery of corruption and personal influence, and interfered with tyranical arrogance, in the political affairs of States and municipalities.

He has rewarded with influential and lucrative offices, men who had acquired his favor by valuable presents, thus stimulating the demoralization of our political life by his conspicuous example.

He has shown himself deplorably unequal to the tasks imposed upon him by the necessities of the country, and culpably careless of the responsibility of his high office.

The partisans of the administration, assuming to be the Republican party and controlling its organization, have attempted to justify such wrongs and palliate such abuses to the end of maintaining partisan ascendancy.

They have stood in the way of necessary investigations and indispensable re orm, pretending that no serious fault could be found with the present administration of public affairs.

Thus seeking to blind the eyes of the people. They have kept alive the passions and resentments of the late civil war, to use them for their own advantage.

They have resorted to arbitrary meas ures in direct conflict with the organic law, instead of appealing to the better instincts and the latent patriotism of the Southern people by restoring to them those rights, the enjoyment of which is indispensable for a successful administration of their local affairs, and would tend to move a patriotic and hopeful national feeling.

They have degraded themselves and the name of their party, once justly entitled to the confidence of the nation, by abase sycophancy to the dispencer of executive power patronage unworthy of Republican freemen, they have sought silence 'the voice of just criticism, and stifle the moral sense of the people and to subjugate public opinion by tyrannical party discipline.

They are striving to maintain themselves in authority for selfish ends, by an unscrupulous use of the power which rightfully belongs to the people, and should be employed only in the service of the country.

Believing that an organization thus led and controlled can uo longer be of service to the best interests of the republic, we have resolved to make an independent appeal to the sober judgment, conscience and patriotism of the American people.

We, the Liberal Republicans of the United States, in National Convention assembled at Cincinnati, proclaim the principles as essential to a just government 1. We recognize the equality of all before the law, and hold that it is the duty of the Government in its dealings with the people to mete out equal and exact justice to all, of whatever nativity' race, color or persuation, religious or political. 2. We pledge ourselves to maintain the Union of these States, emancipation and enfranchisement, and to oppose any reopening of the questions settled by the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments of the Constitution. 3. We demand the immediate and absolute removal of all disabilities imposed on account of the rebellion, which was finally subdued seven years ago, believing that universal amnesty will result in complete pacification in all sections of the country. 4. That local self-government, with mpartial suffrage will guard the rights of all citizens more securely than any centralized power. The public welfare requires the supremacy of the civil -over the military authority and the freedom of person under the protection of the habeas corpus. We demand for the individual the largest liberty contistent with -public order, for the State self-government, and for the nation a return to the method of peace and the constitutional limitations of power. 5. The civil service of the Government has become a mere instrument of partisan tyranny and personal ambition and an object of selfish greed. It is a scandal and reproach on free institutions, and breeds demoralization, dangerous to the prosperity of Republican government. 6. We therefore regard a thorough reform of the civil service as one of the most pressing necessities of the hour that houesty, capacity .and fidelity constitute the. only valid claims to public employment that offices of the Government cease to be a matter of arbitrary favoritism and patronage, and that public stations become again a post of honor. To this end it is imperatively required that no President shall be a candidate for re-election. 7. We demand a system of Federal taxation which shall not unnecessarily in terfere-with the industry of the people, and which shall provide the means necessary to pay the expenses of the Government economically administered, the pensions, the interest on the public debt, and a moderate annual reduction of the principal thereof ami recognizing that there are in our midst, honest but irreconcilable diflerences of opinion with regard to the respective systems of protection and free trade, we remit the discussion of the subject to the people in their Congressional Districts, and the decision of Congress thereon wholly free of executive interference or dictation. 8. The public credit must be sacredly mantained, and we denounce repudiation in every form and guise. 0. A speedy return to specie payment is demanded alike by the highest considerations of cmmercial morality and honest government. 10. We remember with gratitude the heroism and sacrifices of the soldiers and sailors of the Republic, and no aet of ours shall ever detract from their justly earned fame for the full rewards of their patriot-

11. We are opposed toall further grants of lands to railroads or other corporations. The public domain should be held sacred to actual settlers. 12. We hold that it is the duty of the Government, in its intercourse with fojeiun nations, to cultivate the friendships of peace, by treating with all on fair and equal terms, regarding it alike dishonorable either to demand what is not right or to submit to what is wrong. l:i. For the promotion and success of these vital principles and the support of the candidates uoiuinated by this Convention we invite and cordially welcome the cooperation of all patriotic citizens without regard to previou? political affiliation.

HAIR VIGOR.

AyiSrs

A I I O

For the Renovation of the Hair! The Great Desideratum of the Age! A dressing which is at once agreeable, healthy, and effectual for preserving the hair. Faded or gray hair ia soon restored to its original color and the gloss ana freshness of youth. Thin hair is thickened, falling hair checked, and baldness often, though not always, cured by its use. Nothihg can restore the hair where the follicles are destroyed, or the glands ftrophied or decayed. But such as remain can be saved for usefulness by this application. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sediment, it will keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from falling ofl and consequently prevent baldness. Free from those deleterious substances which make some preparations dangerous and injurious to the hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely for a

HAIR DRESSING, nothing else can be found so desirable. Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts longer on the hair, giving it a rich glossy lustre and a grateful perfume.
