From the New York World.

The Deprave# Drama.

It is a curious fact that the managers and the playwrights when they rusli into print in defence of the morality of their own acts assail with the most unfortunate fatuity the morality of the general stage. Mr. Boucicault, in behalf of his "Formosa," actually made out that the success of the modern stage depends upon its appropriation of all the filth that the daily press exhumes. And Mr. Charles Reade when called upon to champion his "Twelve Temptations," triumphantly vindicated his art by showing the world that he had taken his materials from the police records of the Tunr.s. Whatever painful or disgusting facts in the actual life of a community were published in the records of the day were fit subject-matter for art to amuse and edify the people with. Such indeed was the sum of the argument held by both these writers. We stated at that time that the worst possible result of this defense of nastiness in art would be the imitation of less competent workmen, who would not only step with alacrity upon the same dunghill, but would reproduce the same arguments in self-extenuation. That is now taking place here. The author who wrote and the managers who produced the play called "Black Friday" have both written cards taking issue with what are called "the virtuous censors of the age which we take to mean the dramatic critics of the New York press, though that appellation is not familiar to us in connection with these writers.

The plea put forth by the dramatist is that his production^ as pure as were the reports of the Fisk-Mausfield fight that appeared iu the daily papers. He calls the attention of "the virtuous censors of the age" to-a fact which, we dare say has escaped their attention, and which is that the circulation of the newspaper is increased with the fiagrancy of its reports "that those churches are most crowded whose preachers do not hesitate to give sensational discourses,, using personal examples to illustrate the vices of society." And he asks with a lo«ic that will make the lovers of drama tremble, "why then, in the name of common sense, should the manager be debarred from placing before the people that which should afford him the greatest return for his outlay?"

This profound misconception of the duties of the playwright could not have been shown by any other than the author of such a work as "Black Friday." It is because the stage is infested vith such unscrupulous and mercenary writers that it so often merits' the contempt of critics and public alike. It is for such playwrights that we are compelled to come down in explanation to the alphabet of resthetics and morality, and explain that a police report is not a work of art intended to be held up for the idle amusement of the people, and that post-mortem examinations are not specially adapted for the delectation of women and children, however great the return for the outlay. In the name and for the sake of common sense, some of that same commodity must be engrafted on the modern playwright if he would even hold the mirror down to nature with tolerable propriety. He is to be told that the public stage is no place for the arbitrament of unsettled public scandals, and that to travesty the person of an imprisoned culprit awaiting trial for his life is a frat that surpasses in its defiance of decency the most lawless newspaper exploit of which we have any knowledge.

That this play, which all accounts agree is the most conspicuous example of improper material inartistically used, that the local stage has presented, should be openly defended by its author and the managers who are responsible for its representation, and defended, too, with the plea that it is no worse than the newspaper reports, is one of the most humiliating evidences yet produced of the correlation of the theatre and the police courts. There was a time when the stage was healthy and vigorous enough to spew such filth out of its mouth without argument.

What Came of Answering an Advertisement for a Wife. The Rondout, Freeman says that a very respectable young lady of Haugerties, New York, has had her reason completely restored lately, as the following incident shows She discovered in some paper an advertisement purporting to have come from a highly respectable (worthy and handsome of course) Christian young man, desiring some young lady to correspond with hini, probably with a view directed toward matrimony. Now, as she was a plain country lass, although her folks were well-tivdo people, she was by

110

means one who

should waste her sweetness on the desert air," so she concluded to answer. In due time a reply came, and as time passed 011 the letters became more and more affectionate. At last affairs came to a crisis, and the young gallant was invited to come and see her. He did come. But alas for her hopes any fancies of delight! he came dead— drunk. But the joke of it was, he had to go two or three miles out of the village, and every house he went to he inquired if Miss lived there. Being very tight, he would generally state the object of his visit to her, and would read her last letter and pass on to the next house. He made out to reach her house at ten o'clock at night. The old folks were absent, but the two sisters were there. The meeting can be better imagined titan described suffice it to say that the correspondence has ceased.

In the Wrong Bod.

An amusing incident occurred iu Carver street last evening. A lady went up stairs to put her little son to bed, and, as she was about to light the gas, the child, hearing a sound of breathing, cried out, "Oh, mamma, there's a dog in the bed." "Guess not, child "I ain't no dog," iu an augry, childish tone, came from the bed. Turning toward the couch, the lady saw two eyes, shining like balls of fire in the darkness. Seizing her child, she ran af-* frighted and screaming to the* street. Two policemen were summoned. With clubs and dark lanterns in hand they invested the chamber, and wheu the gas was turned on, there, snugly cuddled up under the bed clothes was a four 'or five year old darkey, as self-possessed as if upon its mother's knee. "Who are you?" said the officer. "Horace Greeley Bennett, sir," said the child. Wheredo

you live?" "Iu Auderson street." "How did you come here?" "Father wpnt out, wid fie ice cream, acid I tuk a walk." The little fellow had seen the front door open, and entered. Going quietly up stairs and finding an unoccupied bed, he laid his drowsy form upon it for rest. The lady's heart had ceased to throb with fear, and, giving Horace Greeley Bennett a dougliDiit, she consigned him to the custody of the police, whasent him home. Boston Post.

For the Renov«ation of the Hair!

The Great Desideratum of the Age!

A dressing which is at once agreeable, healthy, and effectual for preserving the hair. Faded or gray hair is soon restored to its original color and the gloss ana freshness of youth. Thin hair is thickened, falling hair checked, and baldness often, though not always, cured by its use. Nothing can restore the hair where the follicles are destroyed, or the glands ftrophied or decayed. But such as remain can be saved for usefulness by this application. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sediment, it will keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from falling off and consequently prevent baldness. Free from those deleterious substances which make some preparations dangerous and injurious to the hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely for a

HAIR DRESSING,

nothing else can be found so desirable. Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts longer on the hair, giving it a rich glossy lustre and a grateful perfume.
