From the Scientific American
A Remarkable Telegraph Improvement. The Western Union Telegraph Com panv has acquired the exclusive ownership of the patents of 1868 of Joseph B. Stearns, of Boston, Mass., for instruments by which telegraph messages are transmitted in opposite directions by the use of a single wire. This improvement is one of the most important that has been made in connection with telegraphy siuce the introduction of Henry's inventions by Prof. Morse.
Many of the Stearns instruments are now. in use, and the Western Union Company is introducing them upon its lines as fast as they can be manufactured. The importance of the invention will be understood when we state that it practically doubles the transmitting capacity of every telegraph wire owned by the company.
Let none of our readers suppose that the chimera of "sending two currents in opposite directions on the same wire" has been realized in this invention. Not that, but its practical equivalent is realized, to-wit: Two messages are transmitted simultaneously iu opposite directions by means of one wire while the electrical current is always moving in one circuit, iu the usual manner. By ingenious arrangement of instruments at the two ends of a line, say between New York and Boston, the operator at New York is enabled to transmit a message to Boston while the operator in Boston is at the same instant transmitting a message to New York, one set of signals being transmitted by that portion of the current which passes over the wire, and the other set of signals being transmitted by that portion of the current which returns through the earth. We shall, on a future occasion, probably, illustrate and fully describe this marvel of telegraphy.
The actual money value of this remarkable invention to the Western Union Telegraph Company is estimated to-day at a quarter of a million dollars and each year, as business increased, its value must augment.
We ought to add that Mr. Stearns, the inventor, is one of the boat of living electricians, and his discovery is the simple Jesuit of profound and exact study of the laws of electricity. As a mau of genius, who has conferred lasting benefits upon his fellowmeu, Mr. Stearns is entitled to the highest respect.
Cameos.
To describe these wonderful productions—and they occupy the highest position in the marvels of glyptic art—is to give almost the entire history of the world's iesthetics. As lasting as precious stones, owing to the indestructible character of the material on which they are wrought, the most exquisite productions of Greek and Roman art have comedown to us in as great perfection as when they left the artist's hands. A cameo is to be regarded as a picture, and subject to precisely the same standards of criticism a sarbonyx, or sardonyx, is the canvas, and on this hard and unyielding substance the artist exerts his skill. Two painters may use the same material, select the same model but while one produces a miracle of beauty and truthfulness, the work of the other is wanting in grace, delicacy and sentiment. Take a cameo conceived in good taste and executed with skill without the jeweler's art it tills the eye with beauty take a poor production, mount it as elaborately as you please, and, notwithstanding its costly surroundings' it is no better than a wretched daub in an elaborate frame. Aside from the delicate perception of the beautiful, so necessary in all art, nothing can exceed the patient skill of the worker in cameos. Months elapse before any noticeable progress is made in the picture. Formerly subjects taken from the antique were only employed but modern taste has widened the field, and portraits of historic characters, reproductions of the heads froin the great masters of painting and sculpture, are much appreciated.
AN aged but rather rural deacon of Can bury, Conn., somewhat astonished his family on returning from a recent visit to Bridgeport by disclosing in the recesses of his capacious valise two valuable volumes in blue and gold, a prize package containing gold coin, a cake of tig paste, two pictorial papers, and a package of ice-cream candy. He said a boy on the cars gave hiiu these things. He confessed that the boy was an entire stranger, but fervently hoped Heaveu would paint him a sky-blue if he ever forgot his kindness.
A SARCASTIC Ohio editor notices that "last evening the beautiful daughter of Mr. Loveputi, the accomplished and gentlemanly wagon maker of this viciuity, was united in wedlock to George Beerstat, the talented artist, whose charming hint scapes are upon the dashboard of every buggy everturned out of his father-in-law's shop, and who at striping carriage wheels has no peer living since Rubens died-."
FASHIONABLE papas, who want to make a splurge, put among their •laughters' wedding presents a check for $10,000, or $.M).000, or $100,000, as the case may be, having taken the precaution beforehand to go to the bank and stop payment.
AT a recent funeral of a Spiritualist iu Sau Francisco, medium stated that the deceased was present, standing ou his head, performing all sorts of antics and making fun of the corpse.

For the Renovation of the Hair!
The Great Desideratum of the Age!
A dressing which is at once agreeable, healthy, and effectual for preserving the hair. Faded or gray hair is soon restored to its original color and the gloss and freshness of youth. Thin hair is thickened, falling hair checked, and baldness often, though not always, cured by its use. Nothing can restore the hair where the follicles are destroyed, or the glands ftrophied or decayed. But such as remain can be saved for usefulness by this application. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sediment, it will keep, it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from falling oft and consequently prevent baldness. Free from those deleterious substances which make some preparations dangerous and injurious to the hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely for a
HAIR DRESSING,
nothing else can be found so desirable. Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts longer on the hair, giving it a rich glossy lustre and a grateful perfume.
