Seeing tbe Point.

A boy returned from school one day with a report that his scholarship had fallen below the usual average. "Well," said his father, "you've fallen behind this month, have you "Yes, sir." "How did that happen "Don'tknow, sir."

The father knew, if the son did not. He had observed a number of dime novels scattered about the house but had not thought it worth while to say anything until a fitting opportunity should offer itself. A basket of apples stood upon the floor, and he said: "Empty out those apples and take the basket and bring it to me half full of chips."'

Suspecting nothing, the son obeyed. "And now," he continued, "put those apples back into the basket."

When half the apples were replaced the son said "Father they roll off'. I can't put in any more." "Put them in I tell you." "But, father, I can't put them in." "You can't? No, of course you can't put them in. Do you expect to fill it with apples? You said you didn't know why you fell behind at school, and I will tell you. Your mind is like that basket. And here you've been the last mouth filling it up with chip dirt—dime novels.

The boy turned on his heel, whistled and said, "Whew I see the point." Not a dime novel has been seen in the house from that day to this.

Others and older persons will see the point.

A WELL-KNOWN lady of BrookviHe read last fall that the nutmeg crop had entirely failed. She atoucesaw a chance to turn an honest penny. So she communicated her plans to a near friend. It was simply to "corner" the nutmeg market of the town. No sooner said than done. They put together their money, and bought and brought nutmegs, till they were ashamed to ask the grocers for more. Then they sent their little girls for nutmegs. Finally the stock in the town was exhausted, aud the two ladies had over one hundred dollars worth of the article. Then they were happy. Their confidence, however, was somewhat shaken in a few weeks, when down town, for they saw more nutmegs. Yet they had hopes. They thought the "rise" had not come yet, and waited patiently. Thus it went on all winter, and no "rise" came. A few days ago they silently and tearfully boxed up their stock and shipped them to a wholesale house in Cincinnati, where they realized about twenty per cent, less than cost price. They have solemnly resolved never to "corncr'' nutmegs again.—Ind. Journal.

THAT is a very good story told of a ministerwho, preaching in a neighboring pulpit by exchange, found in the Bible a note requesting the prayers of the church in behalf of Brother A., who had been deeply afflicted by the loss of his wife, and who, after reading the note and observing the request, learned, to his consternation, that it was a year old, and that the brother prayed for was present on that Sabbath, for the first time, with anew wife. The Congregationaiistdiaws from the story the moral that requests for prayer should never be leftin the pulpit Bible. Another lesson which it teaches is that all notices that go into the pulpit should be dated. The observance of that simple rule would often save the officiating minister from embarrassment.

The Queen of the Free-Lovers, IJtie's mongrel periods had but died Jiway when the tortured air bore another discordant voice in triumph aloft—this tjme tiie would-be lecturess was a stunner, a masher, a great big blonde, hearing the name of Rose McKinly. MeKinly js the rankest of free-lovers. I had the felicity of reading a poem by her, entitled "Psyche," and a very sweet thing it was. A law suppressing indecent literature will attend to that poem if it ever gets into print. Well, McKinly had a long-haired crowd of free-lovers, aud she held forth in a moderete sort of way for two hours. People got up and got out so her peroration wasn't heard by more than two dozen persons.

DURING the war, Major Moderwell, of Geneseo, was shot clear through the body, the ball euteriug the stomach and coming out at the back. The ball carried iuto his body a gold pec and silver pen case which the Major carried in his vest pocket. Since that time eight different fragments of those articles have worked their way out through the sufferer's cuticle. The pieces of silver and gold seem to be .traveling around through the Major's body in whatever direction they choose. Apiece of the pen attempted to get up into his head, but was corraled in the back of the neck and extracted. The favorite point of exit seems to be the bs.— Chicago Journal.

THK Belfast Morning News has called attention to the exportation of factory girls to Belgium, and a few days ago a solicitor brought the matter under the notice of the magistrates of the town. He states that a considerable number of factory girls have been shipped to Belgium, where it was promised they would be provided with employment at wages in advance of those received in that town, and that in some instances the girls have embarked without the knowledge of their parents or other responsible protectors.

A DOLLY VARDEN dress is thus described for the benfit of ignorant people: "A 'Dolly Varden' is a moire antique dress pattern, and it is made of some material, and is cut Was at the top and bottom and trimmed with Honiton polonaises and tube roses, with a peplum runuiug two chains aud three links to the southwest from the starting point, around the skirts of civilization, and pinned together with a self-acting safety-pin. The figures are so large that it takes eight dress patterns to show them off to advantage.

A NEW YORK letter says that Isaacs the New York hangman, is the person who is writing for the New York Commercial Advertiser under the nom de •plume of Eli Perkins. He is the only humorous writer employed by the Advertiser. Mr. Isaacs was formerly a leading journalist of Pittiburg, where he made a great reputation.— Courier Journal.

THE Olney Times says the editor of the Journal of that city runs a sort of newspaper, a real estate ageucy, a Sunday School, all the benevolent enterprises,

except

Catholic festivals, and the Pres-

bytt-iiau Church. But the trouble is he runs them all in the ground. The Carmi Courier says the Journal mau might prop a church, but he cau't prop a gate. That is the unkindest cut of all.

Yeas and Neighs.—If horses could make themselves understood in human language, they would signify by a universal "Yea," their assent to the statement that tbe MUSTANG LINIMENT is the best remedy extant for all these external ailments, and by a mostemphatic "Neigh!" show their displeasure at every attempt to use any other preparation in its stead. Ever since its introduction at St. Louis, at the close of the Mexican War, in 1849, it has proved a signal blessing to horse and man—curing, with absolute certainty and wonderful despatch, such equine diseases as spavin, ringbone, poll evil, scratches, hoofale, &e., and relieving and finally removing the painful affections which attack the muscles, sinews and external glands of human beings. It is a fact beyond contradiction that for all injuries or complaints of man or quadrupeds to which an external remedy is applicable, the MUTANG LINIMENT «is preferable to every other.

Old Prejudices are Dying Out.—New facts are killing them. The idea that invalids weakened by disease can be relieved by prostratiag them with destructive drugs, is no longer entertained except by monomaniacs. Ever since the introduction of DR.WALKER'S VINEGAR BITTERS it has been obvious that their regulating and invigorating properties are all-sufficient for the cure of chronic iudigestion, rheumatism, constipation, diarrhoea, nervous affections, aud malarious fevers, and they are now the standard remedy for these complaints in every section of the Uuion.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if tha medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This hasat last been done. EDWABD WILDEB'S FAMILY PILLS fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mUd. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state ol the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who sufl'eis from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched witn fevei and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.

Helminthology.

A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them trom the human sytem. F™WAKD WLLDER'S MOTHER'S WORM SYRUP 1 true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live in its presense. Mothers! destroy the worms which infest your little ones, with this deiightfu. syrup.

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in deteotiiig the nature and form the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilder-* Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation. He has no fear in the presence croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluab medicine at hand.

Indigestion,

'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and Inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident tha' the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its indi /idual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward WUder's Stomach Bittern, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality ol the disorder by a corresponding speciality oi cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health.

Gaudianna River-

The British army when it advanced oh Talavara .and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gandlana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the in-fading- army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three grept actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and, .vegetable decomposition. The tiio. if separated, are harmless together they are more.potent for evil than, any other known agents so long as they exist, Just so long will wehave need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious .effects, HO long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wilder* Chill Tonic, the master of every form and variety aiid'grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any,.form of ague and fever or chills and fevef, as a ci^re is guaranteed in every case .. .rmtii-llw"foes-tttut

This ancient institution is one ol the largest, and to the medical student, the most Interest* ing of the many public charities which adorn the gay capitol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set apart tor patients suffering with diseases ol the skin, and every patient, old or young, Is taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some lorm. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had eharge o! the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic or scrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettie-ash, roseash,'pimples, scrofuia, ulcers, old sores, falling of thehair, etc. In all they did good, in most they effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward WUder's Sartaparilla and JPotash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded toanyknowB medicine It possesses virtues shared by no other combination of these substances. It is a thei aiH'utic marvel. Against all the disease atwnioh it Is aimed it Is simply resistless it never fails. See to it that yon suffer not oae day longer witli any of the Ills which it cures.
