Go TO Turner's Hall this evening.

THE Criminal next Monday.

THE river is not in very a navigable condition, we should judge from the present lowly stock of water on hand.

THE Republicans of Iowa and Ohio hold their" State Conventions to-day. Those of East Tennessee will hold their convention next Monday.

THE handsomest and most attractive external show case in the city, is said to be that of Riddle. It seems to attract its full share of attention, anyhow.

IF violators of municipal law wish to keep their names out of the Evening GAZETTE, there is but one way to accomplish that object—keep out ol scrapes.

THE disgusting details of a most nauseating and sickening case of incest and infanticide appear Express-ly in the old family organ, this morning. Characteristic.

THE linn of Fouts, Hunter & Thompson are still

THE President and Chief Eugsneer of the Terre Haute & Southwestern Railroad, Messrs. Tuell and Ball, are out on the piospective line of the road on a tour of inspection.

THE young ladies of the Normal School, who have been at home enjoying their vacation, are now returning, much refreshed, invigorated and encouraged to renewed mental effort.

IK thieves manifest a disposition to break through and steal, go to Shryer's and purchase one of those old reliable, though new, Smith & Wesson pepper boxes, or some other pattern.

THE real estate man, C. J. Brackebush, now astouishes the passing pedestrianating public by exhibiting a mammoth and magnificent "signs of the times" in front of his office on Sixth street.

THE successful merchants of this city are those who advertise in the Evening GAZETTE, the circulation of w^iich is so rapidly increasing, even now being so satisfactory to those who advertise most liberally.

THE workingmen's meeting at Turner Hall, on 'Ninth street, this evening at half-past seven o'clock. An Interna tional Workingmen's Association is announced to be organized as the order of business of the meeting.

comfortable coaches, or quietl}7 slumbering* in the gorgeous palace coaches. No one was seriously or slightly injured, so far as we can learn. The train was moving at a very slow rate of speed comparatively speaking, when this novel little episode in Vandalia Short Line travel occurred. In consequence of this mishap, the train did not reach this city until noon to-day, it taking some considerable time and no little

baggage coach. When at the station beyond Cartersburg, a freight train of

cars were met by the ex

press, and it is supposed by the officials of the road that this broken rail must have been the. „i„ ®i

result of the passage of that traitOnj the

Finkbine and Engineer Dod- Lplenjid

son were in charge of the ditched train and are much chagrined no doubt that this rare occasion should have fallen to their lot.

He Has Returned.

T. H. Riddle (as previously announced in the Evening GAZETTE) has returned from his extended business trip to the East, luckily missing the Lightning Express train on the Pennsylvania Central, which was hurled from the track near Johnstown, killing and wounding so many, among the latter our friend Becker, the clothing man. That Riddle escaped this tragedy, is not only fortunate to him, but to this community and country around about. Riddle is one of our business men whom we

our city of like means, the peculiar qualities of business pluck and enterprise characteristic of Terre Haute merchants. This is not all. It is necessary to the best interests of the community that he be here to oversee

and assist in the receipt, display and sale

of the immense stock of goods which he

purchased while East, and which are now

pouring into the Riddle store establish-

ment by every train that enters the city

not half in, it seemed to us this morning

that there was room for no more. How the boys will explain the Riddle of what shall be done with the goods which are now on the way, we know not we think, however, that those now secured will be rapidly sold, as usual. Among the many articles of new goods which were heaped up, shelved away, displayed on counters and in cases, we noted a full and splendid stock of magnificent Dolly Vardens, hose, laces, handkerchiefs, in short every tiling pertaining to a well regulated first-class fancy store. In the line of fancy, fashionable and heavy jewelry we noticed tiie finest watches, clocks, chains, and everthing to be found in a first class jewelry store in great profusion and endless variety.

The wholesale millinery department was slocked as it has never been our pleasure to note in of this successful department of a successful merchant's trade. In every department, accommodating clerks greet the customers with the blandest of smiles, and most courteous manners. Mr. Lightner never fails to give satisfaction in the jeweler's chair.

THE meandering youths who started West to grow up with the country, a few days ago, the mysterious disappearance of whom was duly GAZETTED to the public, returned yesterday. They got no further west than Paris, \ouug

The boys evidently had been in communication with the agricultural editor of the New York Tribune, judging from their following in the course of the star of empire, which westward takes its way. Magnificent Stock of Notions. We passed through the mammoth notion establishment of U. R. Jeffers & Co., Main street, this morning, and as we anticipated, feasted our optics ou a most magnificent array of goods of all kiuds pertaining to a wholesale notion establishment. These gentlemen, with the enterprise which characterises Terre Haute merchants in general, and this financial and business firm in particular, have forced the season and secured a splendid stock of goods in their special line at the lowest prices, which will enable them to offer bargain sales to their hundreds of customers throughout the vast territory they supply. While it is yet whiter, their capacious and well-known notion establishment is receiving all the spring styles in inexhaustible quantities.

Though their large rows of shelves, and commodious and substantial counters are weighed down with goods, it will be two weeks before the entire stock ordered, will be in, though this stock arrives and is stowed away by the car load each day—except Sunday .' What is to be done with that which comes in the future we will leave in charge of the firm, as we could not see where any more could be packed or stowed anywhere from "turret to foundation." As to the quality of the goods, all that it is necessary to say, is that these gentlemen won't have any hut the best. feb6tf.
