From the Brazil Miner.

A Yisionof 1890.

Returning to Indiana after an absence of a number of years, with some gentlemen who had been to Europe for the pur pose of placing in the market the bonds of the Brazil & Hudson Bay Railroad Company, we stopped a few hours in what was once the flourishing city of In dianapolis, but which was now an unimportant town at the junction of several railroads, and a distributing point for the vast quantities of coal, pig iron, Bessemer steel rails and otherimportant manufactures made in Indiana. The city appeared almost deserted by far the most active and energetic portion of the population residing in what was once known as the classic precincts of Stringtown.- A few men, clad in Kentucky jeans, moved listlessly about, squirting tobacco juice here and there and varying the monotony of the time by bowling cobble stones along what was once the road bed of the coal road that was to have supplied Indianapolis with cheap fuel, but which by reason of going by paths they knew not and ways they had not known, had proved a total failure others amused themselves by shouting through rusty iron pipes, which, I was informed were the remains of what was formerly known as the Holly Water Works. Standing on the corner of Washington and Illinois streets, and looking in either direction, there could be seen numbers of houses with placards in front, announcing that they were either for sale or to rent the steps and fences were crumbling away, and shutters hung creaking in the wind, while some hung pendant by one hinge or had fallen completely oil" to the pavement below. I inquired of my companions, "Whence this great change? Indianapolis, as I knew it in years gone by, was a flourishing and rapidly growing city its citizens were enterprising, and its future seemed bright and promising." They answered sadly—for they had once lived there—as follows:

A railroad to the coal fields of Western Indiana to be controlled by the city, was projected, but was opposed by some of the most influential monied men of the city, who foresaw iu it only a vast scheme of plunder by corrupt officials, who would suck the life blood from all who were not in the ring or connected with it but iu spite of all their endeavors and remonstrances, the coal road, (narrow guage) had been built to the vicinity of Bowling Green, in Clay county, passing through the counties of Morgan and Owen the route selected proved to be the worst which could have been chosen—deep cuts, immense fills and numerous short .•curves, entailed an expense that taxed the people of Indianapolis (the city having taken $500,000 in stock), to pay the assessments, beyond precedent an endeavor was made to sell bonds, but the shrewd capitalists of the East and of Europe, seeing the utter folly of building a road into a region of which nothing was known, and from the further fact of the road being narrow guage, rendering it of no use so far as connections with other roads was concerned, refused to invest and the whole cost of the road, rolling stock and all, amounting by reason of the corruption of the ring who controjled it to millions of dollars, came out of the treasury of the city, rendering it bankrupt and impairing its credit almost beyond redemption. Well, the road was built, but after it was built, the question arose, "Where is the vast amount of height from which the road was to have derived its revenue, and where is the cheap coal which was to have made Indianapolis the Birmingham of the West?

And some there are who still ask tke question as they pace listlessly to aud fro in the beautiful grounds of the State Asylum for the Insane, at Terre Haute but to most minds the question answered itself it was not where the road was, that was evident the managers had made the mistake of building the road first aud prospecting for the coal afterterwards had they gone a few miles further north where the coal was proved up and was being worked, the road would have been a success, but following out the insane idea of controling the mines as well as the road, led them into the error of ruuning the road to a section where they thought, (the wish being father to the thought) that everything could be had free, for merely building the road. The road having proved a failure, and the city which built it being bankrupt, the iron was taken up and sold at Sheriff" sale to the Brazil Rolling Mill Co., who rerolled it into heavy rails for the Florida, Brazil & Kamschatka Railroad, which was being pushed forward to completion for the purpose of briugiug to Brazil the magnetic ore of the North Pole which was conveyed from there to Kamschatka by vessels built almost exclusively of iron made from the same ore, which was a great saving in fuel, as the magnetic influence of the iron impelled it rapidly toward the pole. But to return to Indianapolis the first road having proved a failure, some were mad enough to endeavor to have a road built thence into Parke county, to strike the coal, which in a moment of excitement, Prof. Cox had hastily pronounced semiblock, which, being analyzed, (both the word aud the coal) means /»«//-block, the other half being made up of slate auu sulphur. But the coal having been examined by experienced iron men of the

East aud pronounced totally uufitfor the manufacture of iron or steel, on account of the foreign substances contained in it, the project was abandoned and the business men of the city commenced leaving, some going to Terre Haute and some to Brazil, which places had become great manufacturing cities the citizeus of the iatter place haviug awakened to the danger which threatened them, had built an immense reservoir capable of supplying a hundred manufactories with water. All State buildings formerly located at ludianapolis had been removed to Terre Haute, which had also acquired the hnmeuse wholesale business that Indianapolis once possessed, while the manufactories had been removed to the coal fields where cheap fuel co»W be obtained and the great city was now known only as the centre of a network of railroads, which carried everything beyond their reach, aud rendered her only a distribution point for the iron produc's of Braz'l and Terre Haute.

CON.UNDRUM.

AN INGENIOUS MACHINE.—The

only

machine in the United States or in the world, for that matter, for the manufacture of flower-pots, is now in successful operation ftt the Indianapolis Drain,

Tile and Terre Cotta Works, northeast of the city. This machine turns out the smaller sizes of flower-pots at the rate of nine a minute, and moulds the larger sizes about ten times as rapidly as the work can be done on the old plan. Ihe machine is the invention of one of the proprietors, und as soon as the facilities of the establishment are extended, to supply the demand, there is uo doubt that the company will monopolize the flower-pot trade of the United States. The Indianapolis clays used are the best in the United State?, burning'to a clear white, or beautiful flesh color.—hid. Eve. Journal.

So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of tlie tribe of vermes. The historv of Helmintliology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states of the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytem. EDWARD WILDERTs MOTHER'S WORM SYRUP is a true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a

vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its

effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live in its presense. Mothers! destroy the worms which infest your little ones, with this deiiglitfu syrup.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form ol the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all thcaffectionsof the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one cf these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilder-s Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that witli the use OJ this truly great medicine he is fully master 01 the situation, He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples with consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaiuub medicine at hand

Indigestion,

•Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to woi-mwyod," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is SAiiied in the book of nature. It is self evident tiia tlie different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality

The British army when it advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the imading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common la Europe than in out- own country they exist throughout the leDgthand breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sick811) ng influence of miasm. The three grep actors in this equation of disease are solar beat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. JTlie tiio, if separated, are harmless togetheir they are more potent forevilthan any other ljjiown agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be 'necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all Ifnown agents for this purpose, none is to compare with

Edward Wilder's Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any- form of-ague and-fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case.

For the Renovation of the Hair! The Great Desideratum of the Age I A dressing which is at once agreeable, healthy, and effectual for preserving the hair. Faded or gray hair is soon restored to its original color and the gloss and freshness of youth. Thin hair is thickened, falling hair checked, and baldness often, though not always, cured by its use. Nothing can restore the hair where the follicles are destroyed, or the glands ftrophied or decayed. But such as remain can be saved for usefulness by this application. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sediment, it will keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from falling off and consequently prevent baldness. Free from those deleterious substances which make some preparations dangerous and injurious to the hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely for a

HAIB DRESSING, nothing else can be found so desirable. Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts longer on the hair, giving it a rich glossy lustre and a grateful perfume.
