•.THERev. J. H.Waterbuy, of LeRoy, N. Y., will officiate as Rector at St. Stephens' Church, this city, Sunday morning. He will address the Sunday school children in the afternoon.
WE have heard it asserted that the "Jenltin's" communication in the Express of this forenoon, over the signature of''Woman," was the from the quill of Jenkin's himself. Ts this thus?
Do THE mothers and friends of the young lady graduates from thfe Normal School, or the young ladies themselves, appreciate "Jenkinsism" as served up by the Express? is an oft-repeated query in our city's social circles.
THE Baptists will commence the erection of their new church building on the corner of Sixth and Cherry streets some time next mouth. It will cost about $30,000 when completed, and will be elegant, opmmodious and substantial.
THERE is a lively list of aspiring members of the bar of the Democratic persuasion who want to be candidates for the position of Circuit Prosecutor on that ticket. Others again are "playing 'possum," waiting for the angelic Daniel to t)Ot his horn.
THE Messrs. Ross are disposing of some elegant furniture at their establishment west of the old Court House square at bargains to the customers, if not to the dealers themselves. This sacrifice is made that they may retire from the business in April.
JOHN G. SHRYEK, ESQ., contemplates "setting up housekeeping" in the magnificent new brick residence on Cherry street recently constructed by L. Rothschild, and by him'sold to Oweu Tuller. Mr. Shryer gets possession May 1st, a very cheerful and auspicious mouth to engage in so commendable an enterprise.
A MUNIFICENT DONATION.—New Albanians offers eighty thousand dollars in cash to the stockholders of the Jeffersonville Car Works, destroyed by fire in that city day before yesterday, to relocate their mammoth establishment in the city of New Albany. This is certainly a munificent offer, and is worthy of consideration, certainly. But the gentlemen to their own business. If we had any suggestions to make it would be that they come to Terre Haute, near the coal fields. jsoT.if
c.r. "Jenkinsism^
In reference to our strictures on the Jenkinsism of the forenoon Express in reporting the exercises of the commencement exercises of the Normal School, that sheet this morning s^ys: "It is rather amusing to see a sheet tbat has nauseated all its readers by the most pryinji, disgusting style of 'Jenkinsism' a sheet whose editors have invaded the privacy of domestic life, and draged the manners, dress and habits of ladies before the public—supplementing its already too successful efforts to make an ass oi itseir bv criticising the style of the gentlemen vh reported the Normal School Commencement for this paper. That gentleman onlv followed the example of the most prominent journals of the country in describing the dress and personal appearance ol' three ladies who, i:i a public manner, entered upon a public career. And he did it so well tiiat a number of our cotcmporaries, in other cities, have copied

private circles is the abomination of all well-regulated mirids. But we fail to see that there is any impropriety in describing those who appear before the public for the avowed purpose of starting upon professional life.
The above bears the ear-marks of the writer, in one word which is descriptive and characteristic of himself and is often made us of by him. It is a word which we do not care to repeat here, therefore leave our readers to seek it out for themselves in the above extract. The writer of the above exerts himself to defend a very defenceless case. He holds that the Jenkinsism objected to by us, the Journal and at least three-fourths of the ladies and gentlemen of this community, as being entirely proper and within the legitimate sphere of modern journalism.
In support of this, the writer asserts that his "Jenkins" followed the example of prominent journals, and so successfully did he do the duty assigned him that a number of cotemporaries copied and complimented his descriptions. Where is there a paper that copied and complimented the report We venture to say, without fear of successful contradiction, that there is not^pe which had done so up to the time the above was written, so that the writer of Jenkins' defense could have received it. This being the case, his statement can be considered untrue until proven.
Even if papers of other eities did copy and compliment such reprehensible Jenkinsism, it would be no defense for the Jenkins who thus drags modest and worthy young ladies, their'dress, forms and age ridiculously before the public. Any one who attended the exercises and noted the style in which the ladies were dressed, upon reading the mental meanderings of this amateur Jenkins, would uphesitatingly pronounce the production a burlesque or the Jenkins laboring under a strange and unaccountably infatuation, thus being led into the reprehensible and ridiculous. We have heard no one speak in terms of commeudation of that part of the report referred to under .the head of Jenkinsism, though we have heard many condemn it in the severest terms, not only, but also denounce the writer as being out of his sphere to a tlegree disgusting in the extreme.
9
The charges preferred by Jenkins' defenders against the editors of this paper, because we made a conscientious criticism, are only the principle of "you are just as deep in the mud as we are in the mire."
We don't know of any journalistic mistake which the editors of the GAZETTE have made, which has met with such universal condemnation as this display of Jenkinsism of the Express. The only case in which we did Jenkinsize was on tlie occasion of Mrs.Moultou's first appearance here, and we did that because her agents advertised her magnificent wardrobe and persoual appearance much more than her musical talent. She makes the stage her profession aud the display of her wardrobe her practice. The young ladies Jenkinsized by the Express, made no such pretenses, were modest, in demeanor, plainly arrayed and most efficient in the exercises in which they participated.
Wemakethi3longstatemeutofthis matter because there is much feeling manifested regarding the case and a strong and growing disposition to enter into the discussion of the matter by all interested persons. We were very reserved in our first criticism, compared to the expressions of disgust heard by us' from many ladies and gentlemen#of this citj*. That nearly a column of defense of Jenkins and denunciation of the GAZETTE is made in the Express of this morning, we propose to be more severe. More if necessary.
The Fires. THE FIRST.
Yesterday afternoon about four o'clock or half-past, a fire was discovered in the rear part of the tenement house occupied by the widow of James Gordon and her family, her son Thomas and his wife. The alarm was sounded and department called out, the firjmen doing all they could to control and suppress the flames, without avail until much of the furniture and household effects of the families occupying the house had -been destroyed or almost ruined by fire and water. On this, we understand, there was no insurance. The-house was owned by Mrs. S. Whitworth, on which there is insurance to the amount of $1,000 in the ^tna, Hartford, Hager & McKeen, which is safe. The building, valued at about two thousand dollars, is almost a total wreck, hence the loss must necessarily be heavy.
THE SECOND
alarm was sounded about ten o'clock last night, and was occasioned by the burning of an old trunk in the rear of the postoffice building, which was discovered in the upper portion of the house by young Realy, one of the P. O. clerks, who promptly and with- rare presence of mind, hurled it into a back alley. By Mr. R.'s presence of mind you can go to the P. O. and get your, mail to-day.
