Block Coal.

There is a growing tendency among the manufacturing interests of the East to move Westward. Among the recent removals are Colby Brothers & Co., manufacturers of willow ware ftc., the Case & Thomas Manufacturing Co., and S. H. Thomas, manufacturer of ink-, blueing, mucilage, fec., from Waterbury, Vermont, to Reading, Michigan.—Chicago Tribune.

And it behooves LaFayette to be stirring herself to secure at least a fair proportion of this emigration. Would it not be a good idea for the Board of Trade to appoint a committee to correspond, or communicate in person, with leading manufacturers in the East, to solicit them to examine into the natural advantages which our city can offer, and to consider the propriety of a re-loca-tion. There can be no doubt that there is a growing disposition among Eastern manufacturers, to come further West, and locate at some point nearer their supplies of raw materials, and their best market. The unexampled advantages afforded in the manufacture of iron and steel by our great Indiana block coal field, will no doubt serve to produce quite an exodus of founders from less favored localities. The competition for the location of these establishments in Indiana lies mainly between Indianapolis, Terre Haute and LaFayette. Terre Haute is nearest the coal fields, Indianapolis the greatest railroad center. Both are better organized for effective effort tfian LaFayette. Yet our city is more favorably situated than either of the others named. We are nearer the coal than Indianapolis, nearer the Lake Superior iron ore than either, and in shipping facilities hardly inferior to the Capital while we have an additional element of great importance in the Wabash & Erie Canal, penetrating the coal regions, and which, with a comparatively small expense, could be deepened and improved as to bring coal to LaFayette at least one cent per bushel cheaper than it can possibly be brought here or to Indianapolis by rail. Tne question is, shall we folly improve these, our great advantages Snail not correspondence be opened with the iron and steel men And when the great enterprises upon which we are now engaged assume visible shape, shall we not invite them to call and take a look over the ground, to see what advantages we have to offer?—LaFayette Journal.

Journal, like many in

dividuals, has fallen into the error that the great stratas of coal which, starting at Harrison and Crawford counties,'o& the Ohio

It is bituminous coal, and contains enough sulphur to render it almost useless for smelting purposes There is found, also, at different places, semi block coal, but the real genuine block ooal, which is entirely free of sulphur, that

and is admirably useful for making iron, has only been found in a region of country whose length is about thirty miles, and wbosenvidth is not over four miles About the center of this region is the village of Brazil, and it has not been discovered than ten miles north of this center, more

the value of silence at a time of great trial it is the Democratic party

Individual Democrats are very anxiotls to listen to whatever any intelligent per son may have to say bearing on the Presidential subject, and they will ask more questions than any set of men can ever hope to answer, or indeed that anybody can answer, having only human knowledge. But further they do not want to go They will listen t& any amount of talk on the subject, and will ask any amount ot questions But they will have nothing to say themselves. OPINION OF AN OLD DEMOCRAT. A prominent Democratic member from one of the Western States who has Been in Congress over ten years and is one of the ablest on the floor, said the other day to me that from present appearances he was afraid that Grant would not be renominated. When asked why he was afraid of it, and why he wanted Graut renominated he said he was the man that the opposition could beat, only

a large portion of the Western

States as well as New Hampshire, Con necticut.New Jersey and Massachusetts and perhaps New York and Pennsylva nia, to say nothing of the immense body of Republicans who have sloughed off from the party since it has been in the keeping of the present Administration?"

I asked the gentleman what the Dem ocrats wanted. He answered very quickly that they would prefer to nomi nate and elect their own for Presi dent and President, men

We are buying five pieces of carpets to your one. It costs us nothing sell carpets. It costs you 20 per cent. 'J'"

You stand no chance at all of competing with us. You must bow to the inevitable and give to us the lead.

During the past year and nine months we have bent our energies ehiefly to the development of our Dry Goods business. Having put that beyond the reach of all competitors,we now tarn our attention to the Carpet Trade, and we start out with the assertion that in a very short time we shall be selling a larger amount of carpets than is sold by any retail firm in the State of Indiana. When we propose to do a thing that settles it. Everybody knows it will be done, and

We do Propose to do- the Carpet Trade!

Our Carpet.Boom is over our Dry Goods Store, and so costs us nothing for rent. It is twenty feet wide and one hundred feet long, and is crowded with

stock of goods. Thousands of yards thousands of worth of new PETS, OIL CLOTHS, MATTINGS,&Cand
