The Fire Last Sight.

Sometime about midnight inst night the alarm of fire was sounded from thej First Ward Engine House-, ami resounded throughout the cit^H^The fire department, under Chief Van P.runt, were out promptly, and repaired at great speed to the Teutonia Hotel, where the lire liad iwio a.m already been loc-itcd. Arriving there the firemen located their engines, communicated the hose with the lire-cis-terns, and commenced the work ot suppressing the flames, which they soon did, though they were getting under good headway, having reached the upper flo.or. Holes were cut in the flooring from above, the mouth of the hose asserted therein, and the conflagration deluged with water, and thus hundreds of thousands of dollars of property snatched from the embrace Qf the dread destroyer of the accummulations of a|li#e time. "Our reporter", has been at great pains to gather up and put together the facts and circumstances of this case, .which go to implicate a party in having something to do with or knowing something about the origin of the flames. These facts aud circumstances so near as we can learn them are as follows That the store room where the fire originated has for somelime been occupied by Jas.

P. Hill, of the firm of E.G. Collins & Co., Boston, as one of a series of "Dollar Stores." Of late it has been occupied and kept open by Jas. P. Ilill and a boy. At 4 o'clock yesterday the boy was sent from the premise.- fit about 6 o'clock the front door of the room was observed closed. Between 10 aud 12 o'clock in the night, Andrew Kelly, of the regular night police, discovered that the inside of the room was in a blaze. He gave the alarm, broke out a light in front, and entered. Almost simultaneously, special Merchant Policeman Jack Robinson discovered the fire in the store room from the rear, and entered from that point. Upon entering, we understand these gentlemen found thefire burningcombustible material in three places, two places under the counter, in one place burning up through the counter, each place where trie fire was burning being too far distant from the stove to admit of a possibility of its having been communicated therefrom. Straw, dry goods boxes and other combustible articles were piled up and heaped about in the vicinity of the flames in great profusion.

The flames had already commenced to burn through the floor above, and the Chief of Department thinks that had the discovery been made fifteen minutes later,* they would have bee»» under such head way .that it would have beeu almost impossible to have controlled them with the facilities at hand. Had this been the case the most costty aud beautiful block in the city, would this morning have greeted the eyes of beholders a mass of smouldering ruins.

It is said that the stock of goods in the room was not worth over §200, on which there was an insurance of SI000, in the Andes. Li3s to stock about $2 75, to the block between $200 and .$300. President Bennett- has beeu telegraphed for instructions what to do under the circumstances and facts of the case, and the turveylance of a policeman is over the proprietor of the stock thus insured, for the present. We hope that Mr. Hill can account for these circumstances and harmonize them so as to clear him of the cherished belief of many that lie has been careless or criminal in the matter, if he i^s innocent. Meanwhile we trust that public opinion will be suspended as to the gentleman, who itsiems is under a cloud.

To the police, regular and special, and the efficient Chief of the Fire Department and his assistants, is due the salvation of much valuable property and the thankslof property owners aud the entire community.' This occurrence should inspire the people of Terre Haute with confidence in their .police &nd Fire Department. Both ou last evening fully redeemed themselves fro'm any charges of incompetency and more than rendered an equivalent for all they have cost the city since they have been in the city's employ/ jUFf-J*!

The Concert.

There was not quite so large an attendance at the grand Opera House last eveuing as there was the previous evening, though there was., a very good sized and certainly demonstrative audience preseut. The programme presented was of rare merit and rendered in most acceptable style. Mrs. Moulton's rendition of "Tender and True, Adieu, Adieu," was touchingly beautiful, touching the hearts-of many ladies and gentleman in attendance, and filling them with sym-% .pathetic sentiment. In fact, she- did well in all she undertook wliile here. Though not a successful rival of Nilsson and one or more other distinguished prima donnas we could name, she is truly a Kreat singer and a magnificent lady/v mil* "Her support is excellent throughout. Especially fe* this true, in the popular sense, at least of this city, so far as Brookhouse Bowler is concerned. He fully deserved the euttfusiastic plaudits of the audience last evening, and we know he appreciated the reception that greeted him, for lie was not loth to respond to the many encores with which' he was greeted.

Wehli, as a pianist, completely won the admiration and applause of the house at each appearance, being encored at the close of eaeh rendition. The accomplishment of this gentleman in the way of.li.is favorite vocation makes him, iii the estimation of the critics of two continents, one of the most eminent pianists of,, his time.

Sig. Forsetti seemed unfortunate in being Allotted difficult and unappreciative parts, thus failing to secure his share of applause.

George W. Colby, as mucical director, furnished the piano -Accompaniments with rare ability and accomplishment.

Gentlemen, we must have control of the Carpet trade. If necessary to secure this control, we shall mark the price of Carpet in our establishment down to New York cost. If that will not do it, we will deliberately lose five thousand dollar's upon our Carpet department, and trust to the trade of future years to. bring it back. We are in earnest in this matter. We are not here in Terre Haute for one year, five years, or ten years but we are here permanently and are willing to" lake any loss that is necessary to continue us in control of the Dry Goods and Carpet trade. We have nerve, capital and enterprise. We h^vve youth, euthusiasm and experience. We love our business and are willing to givo it our best and closest attention, and we are bound to place it miles ahead of the business of any of our competitors. 7-dlt FOSTER BROTHERS.

Removal.—On or about April 1st, I will remove to my new store room, on Main street, between Sixth and Seventh, where I shall be better prepared than ever before to show an unusual fiueand attractive stock of our spring millinery. With thanks for the very liberal patronage for the past few years, no effort will be lacking to merit its continuance. 7dtf M. A. RAFIDON.

We tender oar apologies to that grim, gruff, growling, grumbler of the Express, of this morning. We are sorry if our "troupe of boys"-have awakened him from a somewhat late morning nap, at the "unseasonable hour" of niue or ten o'clock in the morning. We regret, also, to have to spoil his grunmling growl by informing him of ivhat he well knows—that our boys with circulars^ are never allowed to ring bolls of private houses. We are at present, however, engaged in distributing, gratuitously to all citizens, a book usually sold at 20 cents a copy, containing cuts of all the newest styles in Ladies' and Children's dress, and we have instructed our boys to place these directly in the hands of the residents of every house in the city. If growling grumlber will «send us his address, his wife shall not have any, and we will avoid doing anything hereafter to interfere with, his right to sleep until noon. Magnificent Stock of Notions. We passed through the mammoth notion establishment of U. R. Jeffers & Co., Main street, this morning, and as we anticipated, feasted our optics on a most magnificent array of goods of all kinds pertaining to a wholesale notion establishment. Thele gentlemen, with the enterprise which characterises Terre Haute merchants in general, and this financial and business firm in particular, have forced the season and secured a splendid stock of goods in their special line at the lowest, prices, which will enable them toofl'er bargain sales to their hundreds of customers throughout.the vast territory they supply. While it is yet winter, their capacious and well-known notion establishment is receiving all the spring styles in inexhaustible quantities.

Though their large rows of shelves, and commodious and substantial counters are weighed down with goods, it will be two weeks before the entire stock ordered, will be in, though this stock arrives and is stowed away by the car load each day—except Sunday What is to be done with that which comes in the future we will leave in charge of the firm, as we could not see where any more could be packed or stowed anywhere from "turret to foundation." As to the quality of the goods, all that it is necessary to say, is that these gentlemen won't have any but the best., fe£6tf.
