Slface the publication of Prof. Foster's letter in the New York Tribune, in which he spoke of the superior advantages of Eel river as a location for iron and steel works over Brazil, or made an argument to that effect, our neighboring exchanges have been twitting the "Iron City' 'about it. Tfie following from the Bloomiiigton Progress is a fair sample:
The prospective building of the Cincinnati fe Terre Haute Railroad is waking up the people of Brazil to the fact that a rival is likeJy to spring up on the banks of Eel river, which, having the advantage of plenty of water at all seasons of the year, with as much and as good coal, and other advantages, may outstrip them.
The above facts are also apparent to the watchful and able editor of the Brazil Miner, who duly sounded the alarm through that publication to the citizens of his adopted city. He did this, however, from motives akin to those prompting the editor of theIudiauapolis Journal to assert that "Terre Haute is now the best place on this continent for the manufacture of iron and steel" viz: To stimulate his home readers and home manufactures to the importance of being up and doing in the matter less they be outstepped in enterprise and manufactories. There can be no doubt that when the Terre Haute & Cincinnati Railroad is completed, "Bessemer," the new town site on Eel river, will be a formipable rival of Brazil in iron and steel manufacture, from the fact that the former will have the advantage of the latter in water facilities, while coal will be almost fully as convenient at Bessemer as at Brazil.
Let the old and the new Brazil decide this momentous question among themselves and may the best and most enterprising win. So far as Terre Haute as a city is concerned, she will fight her own battles in the future as in the past. Being aware that she is destined to be the center of the iron and steel manufacture of this contiuent, she' is content to watch and avail herself of all the advantages, both natural and those which she may acquire by her enterprise.
A Good Record.
The "old reliable" Vandalia trails very seldom lag behind, and when they do it is caused by some other trains dela)'ing them in the outset. The truth Of this will be seen by reference to the following from the Indianapolis Journal of this morning:
Th a Vandalia has not had a train off the track during the present winter season, and has missed connections but three times.
Is there a line of railroad of the same number of miles that can show a better record than the above? We surmise there is not one. The cause of this, too, is easily divined by persons not noted for intuition. Good management is the only response to this query, when presented.
This popular line has a President in the person of our well-known and hjghly respected fellow-citizen, W. R. McKeen, Esq., who is untiring, aud unrivalled in efficiency. He is ever on the alert to contribute to the success of the road which he so well represents, as chief executive officer. General Superintendent. Simpson, of Indiauapolis, is on the road all the while, neglectful of everything but the interests of the stockholders. He discharges the responsibilities of bis responsible position in the most satisfactory manner. We will venture the assertion that in each of the above cases of tardiness in trains over this line, be investigated, the cause, and took immediate measures to prevent a recurrence of the same. Train Dispatcher Boyd, of this city, always keeps a true and reliable record of the whereabouts of all trains flrhije on the road. Lon. Robbins keeps the heavy freights out of the way of the lightning express. In short the Vandalia has the "right man in the right place" ill every department. The result, the Journal details above.

Richard Orloff is the name of the new and efficient General Agent of the I. & St. L. Railroad.
It gratified us to see Mr. Edmunds, of the Journal, on the streets last afternoon. He is slowly convalescing from his recent illness.
James Torrence, Esq.', of New York was in the city last evening. W. R. McKeen, Esq., President of the Vandalia, was at Indianapolis yesterday.
T. D. Craddock, Esq., a prominent railroad President of Illinois, and a resident of Effingham, that State, was in the city last evening.
Rev W. W. Curry, Esq., is in the city and is receiving congratulations from his many hundreds of friends. "':i!
Mr. George W. Cummings, hate of the Mail, will go to Bloomington early in the coming week, where he will remain until Commencement exercises at the State University, at that place. He will then and there graduate with his class, we trust and feel assured, with high honors.
Andy Adams, of Newport, formerly editor of the Hoosier State, is in the city prospecting for a future home..

Dowling Hall, last evening, on Itfe'occasion of the observance of Washington's birthday by the Prairie City Guards givinga magnificent reception thereat, was crowded to its upmost capacity, as a matter of course. To say that a most enjoyable time was had by all in attendance would be but to echo the expressions of all who were so fortunate as to be present. The music was excellent and the supper was all that could be desired by epicures, of a more radical type than the Guards or their guests. The Zouave drill of little Jolyiny Bryan, through which his father, put him, was truly wonderful, eliciting audible admiration and enthusiastic applause from all present* This prodigy is but 7 years of age, and goes through this difficult drill with the nonchaUance of an old veteran, this was not the least important and interesting feature of the entertainment if the performer was the least.

PETER CAKTWRIGHT, that old pioneer of Methodism who was almost as aged as the particular religious faith which he so ably represented, is no more. His valuable services as a minister of the gospel, extended through about three quarters of a century, during which period of time he probably did more to ad vance the good cause than any other minister in his time. He has preached all over this western country since its settlement. For the last few years he has lived a rather retired life at his home at Pleasant, Plains, Sangamon county, Illinois, near Springfield. For some time previous to his demise he had been suffering from a stroke of paralysis which caused his death.
