A Mamvith Three Arms.

The WiIliiitn|)ort, Puun., Gazette and Ba'/eJin is responsible fir the following: Among the passenger* on the train iuml south last evening was a man born ami raised in ihecouniyol'Otseao, N. Y. Hi name is NVilMaii Jacobs. He prides hi tn-elf in three well developed arms and hands, the memberextraordinary having grown above the right shoulder blade. It hangs suspended down the back, and Cun be raised and lowered at will. Ill lviigih it is shorter than the awns proper, but possesses extraordinary mu.-ole. which he display whenever occasion demands. No person passing through a railro »d car or meeting him upon the atrect wuii observe any deformity, but alter becoming cognizant of this Mngular ca-^e would perceive a peculiar tit of his coat. He states that he has often been questioned as to why he does not place himself on exhibition or become one of Btrniirri's permanent attractions. His invariable reply is that he is averse to public exhibitions. His father being a wealthy larmer, he had always preferred to remain at home, and was the most active and profitable of farmer's help. He would assist in loading bay and at the same time hold securely the horse's reins. On several occasions lie came near breaking his unnatural member by sudden falls, and at one timesuilered the pangs of a full-sized felon upon the forelinger.

On one occasion, when about eighteen, the village boys thought they wou have a little sport at "three arras" expen-e, and commenced a system of ickiUtardism, followed by attacks upon liis person. Forbearance ceased to be a virtue, and, throwing off his lyose garments, he went at them in true pugilistic style, arm No. 3 performing its duty nobly, and apparently outrivaling Nos. 1 and 2. At the end of the skirmish six prostrate villagers told what a fierce opponent they had met, "Three arms" gained a notoriety and never afterwards was persecuted on account of his deformity. At the outbreak of the rebellion he joined a New York regiment, and so distinguished himself by bravery that be was finally promoted to ('aptain, and ranked as the best drill officer of the regiment to which be was attached. At the close of the war he returned to the farm, and has since remained there. He is uow en route for the (South to visit a sister somewhere in the interior of North Carolina, it may be a query with some how he could use his arm with the proper clothing upon his body. All his garments intended for laboring suits were so made as to open upon the bac and closed by buttoning the uue as a child's apron. Ueintr a man of fine conversational powers an interview with him is especially agree»hie, and he relates many pleasing anecdotes of himself with great relish.

A Chapter of Aci-idcn's.

They have a clever old gentleman in Portehesier, a mu-ic teacher, known as the Professor, or Professor Smith. On Tuesday night the Professor went into an oys'er saloon and ate' forty raw. He then told the waiter to put up fifty for him to take home, and insisted that they should b' pui in a iper bag. This was done. Before he had walked a bloek the bottom une out of the bag, and the oysiers (ell to the pavement and froze fast. The Professor tugged away at them without avail, and at leng'h went to the bir-room across the street to get some hot water to thaw them out. Between the Professor and the bar-room was a chain count cting two iron horseposts. He stumoled over the chain and fell headlong into the street. His hai flew off and sailed down the street before the wind at ice-boat speed. ie Professor started after it, but the hat won the race. The Professor returned to the barroom, L'ot a pitcher of hot water, and went for bis oysters. On his way over he fell across the chain a second time. He scalded his hand and broke the pitcher.

TH had a* terrifying sensation in a boarding hou-e in Divenprr, Iowa, the other evening, the result of the penchant of the lady for a little fun. This lady put on a ghostly mask, donned a coat of her husband's, and, creeping softly to the door of another lady, pushed it ajar, and, with a groan, put her head in the opening. The occupant turned and looked, and gave a shriek, and fell to the floor in spasms. The tun-maker saw the result of her spor', and bwooned away 1 The oise made by the victim caused a rush of other hoarders to the scene, who appreciated the situation at once. It was with great difficulty that the frightened lady was restored to consciousness, and after that she was in a crazed state of mind for several hours. Meantime the other lady was taken to her room, where restoratives brought her to Iter senses. 8'ie inq lired as to the condition of her friend, and when some one told her the facts, she fainted ag tin, remaining in au alarming condition so Ion,' that her husband and all about her were filled with the direst apprehensions. Both ladies were unable to leave their room next day.

A crnious case of optical delusion occurred in this city several weeks since, which has just leaktd out. A middleaged married m, of sound intellect and ahstemiuous ibits, retired at night us wan his usual custom, and, like his consort, Wits soou sweetly dreaming and silo itig the happy hours away. He was awakened in the night by something which he could not account for, and while listening for sounds of burglars, or other trespasses, he saw what he supposed to be a man's haml projecting above the foot-board of the bed. He was a man of nerve, and leaching for his revolver on the stand, blazed away at the hand of the robber. A shriek from his wife, as she awoke at the noie and changed her position, showing to the gentleman that he had shot at his wife's foot, which was protruding from beneath the blankets. His poor shooliiitt save him a surgeon's bill, and hereafter lie proposes logo out of the midnight "Schutzentest" business.—

A Wonderful Performance. Of all the sensational performances of the preseut day that of the Prussian Hercules Herr Holiuin, at the Hoi born Amphitheatre, is described at the moststrikiutr. There have been many performances of the gun trick, but the cannou of Herr Holtumisuota trick, but a reality. A

siesre gun, drawn into the arena by two horses,'is loaded by an artilleryman, and in sight of the audience a cannon ball of twenty pounds' weight is inserted. Then HerrHoltum walks to the opposite side, and, standing face to the muzzle, gives the word of command "Fire!" and sure enough, after a flash and a boom, which shakes the building, the cannon ball is caught by the Prussian Hercules. On one occasion—either throuyh some light error in the management of the guu, or owing to the charge of powder being too jrre.,t—the cannon ball passed over Herr Holtum's head, instead ofinto his hands and, as if to prove that "there was really no deception," carried away a portion of one of the pilasters.—Exchange.

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his timt had invested the nature of chest diseases thai any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form oi the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup,-bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to man age any one of these chest troubles he know? the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of tht many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward W ilderCompound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use Oi this truly great medicine he is fully master OJ the situation. He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence ever tamily should always have this invaluab medicine at hand.

Indigestion,

'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its bain. to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all tht disorders ol the stomach. It is also tht liiosi obstinate. It has been the most written about. .No disease presents such various, contrary, ant incompatible symptoms. They contradict ah the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency which regulate natural events they bother tht doctor, and can only be read by him who itsAi „ed in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has beei-i said that the perfection of medicaj skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician puisues unceasingly, and nevei can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder'* Xtovtach Bittern, their body beiiife the pflrestof copper-distil led whisky, make* this object attainable alike to all. They are specific—the disease specilying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality OJ lhe disoidtr by a corresponding speciality OJ cure, 'lliey should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health.

Gaudianna River-

The British army wnen It advancea on Tala vara and louglii the celebrated battle, whicl was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the imadint? armj was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common ia Europe than in ou owi country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some timt and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening intluence of miasm. The three grert actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. Tht tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a irit-dicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it bt necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all knowi agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wilder'* Chill Tonic, the master of ever} form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, al you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, aa£ cure Is guaranteed in every case.

St. Louis Hospital, Paris.

This ancient instiitution is one ot the largest, and to the n.edical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adorn the gay capitol of the French. It receives within Its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set apart tor patients suffering with diseases ol the skin, and every patient, old or young, is taking potash in some shape, and Hondurat sarsaparilla in some torm. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge ol the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether oi rheumatic or scrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nett/e-ash, roseash, pimples, scrofuia, ulcers, old sores, falling 01 the hair, etc. In all they did good, in 11 ost thej effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward Wilder'$ Oarsaparilla and totash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses viitues shared by no other combination of these substances. It is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the disease at which it is aimed it is simply resistless it never fails. See to it that you suffer not one day longer with any of the ills which it cures. Get it at once.
