THE Terre Haute & Indianapolis Railroad charges two cents a ton per mile for coal freight from Brazil to Indianapolis.

EVERYBODY is tired of winter and wishing for spring. In no previous seasou have we had so much continued cold weather.

THIS is the season when clothes line thieves are usually most prevalent, but we have not heard of their appearance in this city as yet.

SEATH FE HAGER have built several railroad switches for their convenience in building cars, near their shops in the eastern part of the city.

FEARS are entertained that one or two young school marmsof thiscity seriously contemplate giving up their profession for more pleasing duties.

THE erection of but few business houses is contemplated during the coming season, but an immense number of dwelling houses will be built.

WAT. BOSWORTH was confined in the county jail this morning, for attempting to soothe his wife and mother-in-law with sundry clubs and brickbats.

A PROMINENT minister was fined five dollars in the Criminal Court this morn ing for failing to return marriage certificates within the time prescribed by law,

WE learn that the C., D. & V. and E., T. H. & C. Railroad Companies have jointly bought grounds for a depot and other buildings in Danville, costing $14,0J0.

THERE are seveuty-eight students in the Normal School this term. At this time last year there were only thirty-six, showing an increase of more than one hundred per cent.

THE Valentine excitement appears to be on the decrease. There is hardly so great a rush at the book stores to-day as we have been accustomed to notice on St. Valentine's Day.

THE greatest literary treat of the season will come oft'at the Opera House tomorrow night. "What shall we do with our daughters?" will be highly pleasing and very interesting to.all.

WE were wrong yesterday in mentioning the new boot and shoe house of Crawford & O'Boyle, in saying that Mr. Crawford will close his retail store. Such is not the case, he will continue to run that also.

SOME of the county officers are preparing for re-election others are preparing for the grave. The cheerful anticipations of the latter class will most likely be realized uuless those heating furnaces are disposed of.

THE people of Brazil are becoming greatly alarmed over the danger that a rival town, having all the advantages of coal and water, may spring up on the banks of the Eel river, as soon as the C. & T. H. Railroad is completed.

WE are unable to learn the particulars of a shooting affray that is reported to have taken place in a saloon on Ohio street, Sunday night, in which one of the participant is said to have received a discharge in the face, attended with no serious injury.

A FAIR-HAIRED lad of severity-five summers was found dead drunk on East Main street yesterday morning. He was duly cared for by a sympathetic citizen in the neighborhood. We decline giving the name of the lad out of respect for the feelings of his parents.

A TIPPLING citizeu of Bagdad has created considerable excitement in that suburb recently, by the affectionate manner in which he is accustomed to caress his wife with a poker. This demonstrative kind of love may suit some people but it don't take worth a cent in Bagdad.

THB scarcity of all kinds of vegetables at this season of the year, was never greater in this city than at the present time. It is almost impossible to obtain any article of country produce, as the grocers' supplies are exhausted, and the severity of the weather prevents the farmers attending market.

A WELL-TO-DO

citizen of a neighboring

town came into the city the other day and purchased a lot of goods frooTa Main street shoe merchant, for which he paid the cash, and was about taking bis leave, when he happened to remember that his brother had formerly traded with the same merchant. Knowing that his brother had some traits of character that frequently subdued his honesty, he inquired of the merchant whether the brother's old accounts had ever been settled. The answer was in the negative. He then paid the bill, amounting to $20, ordered it receipted and sent to the wayward brother without any knowledge of who had paid it. Now the kindness of this man is only equalled by his shrewdness in not allowing his brother to know who did the rash deed, for he is said to be a man of "nerve," who would not submit to such treatment without resenting it, even from a brother. Should a duel between two brothers in a neighboring town be reported soon, this vile treatment just for the sake of honesty, will doubtless be the cause. ,£ .A iiflW 'V -4.

The "Prairie City Livery Stable Co.," Messrs. Fouts, Hunter & Thompson, proprietors, embraces three first-class establishments, located and managed as follows: The "Opera Stable," corner of Main and Eighth streets, W. R. Hunter, manager the "Fouts Stable," Second street, between Main and Cherry, A. B. Fouts, manager the "Thompson Stable," Third street, between Ohio and Walnut, A. J. Thompson, manager. At each of these three stables, first-class rigs can be obtained on short notice, including almost any desired style of turnout, from a "buck-board" to a fiue carriage or a choice band wagon. For an easy, fast saddle nag, call on either of the above named gentlemen.

Besides their livery stock, they have on hand 18 head of medium horses for the Southern market, and 20 head of heavy draft and fine horses. Their shipments for two days past include a car load of fine mules to the Boston market, leaving now on hand 24 head of the^e "long-eared melodious cusses" for further sale or shipment. Not knowing the given names of either of them, we can only introduce them to the public by their initials, as Mr. Wabash River Hunter, Batchelor of Ai ts Fouts, and Hickory or Andrew Jackson Thompson. As our friend Fouts presents quite a sedate and clerical appearance, we are anxious to learn from the aforesaid "A. B.," if heseut that last car load to the "hub" to "teach the young ideas how to shoot" around Boston Commons, or did our Wabash River "Bob" only send them to keep his two lonesome Bos ton mules company? "Bob's" joke may be the best and latest of the seasont but not Ike simplest or coolest on record. We mean "business." Enough, however, for one day about "horses, asses and mules."

When we first came here our high priest friends gave us just three months in which to "break up." Then they were kind euough to extend the three to six months, and so confidently expected that the wild winds of Deoember would sing our requium. Well, the "wild winds" didn't do anything of the kind, so, because of "the stern logic of facts," we were reluctantly given six months longer in which to sojourn among you, and we were left to encounter dissolution in the balmy month of May, just as the leaves and flowers, and the birds were coming forth to greet us. We "would not die in springtime," and as our health in a business way was better than ever, we failed to "dissolute" at the appointed hour. "Hope deferred" made our friends "heartsick," and they have therefore ceased telling the public when to expect our demise. We believe they are just now singing 'Twas ever thus since childhood's hour,

We've seen our fondest hopes decay."

And so it is that our light has not gone out from the business world, and it happens that we are yet selling all our best Prints at 9 cents a yard.

Main street, this morning, and as we an ticipated, feasted our optics on a most magnificent array of goods of all kinds pertaining to a wholesale notion estab lishment. These gentlemen, with the enterprise which characterises Terre Haute merchants in general and this financial and business firm in particular, have forced the season and secured a splendid stock of goods in their special line at the lowest prices, which will enable them to offer bargain sales to their hundreds of cus tomers throughout the vast territory they supply. While it is yet winter, their capacious and well-known notion establishment is receiving all the spring styles in inexhaustible quantities.
