STOltV Of A HAUNTED HOUSE.

Five Months of Misery.

The unu-iiMl quiet which has prevailed ill Allegheny f..r«ome time |»ast has beeu considerably dk-slurled tne last f«vv days by the report of the existence of "iiHunte.l house" in the eastern part of the city. It forms now the general topic of conversation, and the wildest rumors concerning it are sitioat.

Tne noises occurred for two months between the hours of 7 and 8, and the relining montus about 4

iu the

morning. One evening the occupant heard a knock at the door whicn leads from die hall inco the kitchen, but when the door was opened he found that no person was there. He closed the door, but had no sooner taken his seat than another knock was heard. He inquired wlio was there, when a voice representing a female answered, "Me." He next aked, "iVlmtdo you want?" wuen the an-wt-r, "I want in," was received. He then walked lig illy to the door and queitly opened it, when he heard soft footsteps £»lide

the stairs, but could

see no form. He then rushed up stairs and searched the rooms, but found that no persou was near.

At another time a lady visitor rushed in the kitchen, pale as a sheet, and was ut.aole to speak for some time. Afler recovering somewhat from her fright, she stated (it was about 7 o'clock) that she had come to upend the evening. When she entered the ill, and was walking towards the door leading into the silting room, some person pushed her violeully against tlie wall, held her there for a moment, and then fled up stairs. The search for the person, however, was fruitless. At another lime he was visited by his brother-in-law. One evening, while he was lying awake in bed, he felt a hand as cold as a corpse touch his face, lie jumped out of bed, struck a litiht, hut saw no persou arouud. Bein-z afraid to go to bed a^aiu, lie reclined on a sola, but beiore many minutes the sola rocked like a cradle.

The most wonderful occurrence remains to be told. One night a very singular n»ise was heard. When the parents arose a strange «ight presented itself. The child, who was lying in the cradle, was naked, all the bed clothes having been scattered about the floor, and the clothes taken off and also scatteied. Another lime, while tip-stairs, he heard a crash down stairs, as if a persou had a very heavy axe, and with it was striking a table wi all his might. He rushed down stairs, when, singular to relate, he discovered nothing unusual, and not the faintest noise was heard. He was astonished, however, to hear the same noise, but not quite so loud, from the very spot up-statrs which tie had left. He then went up-stairs with a revolver in his possession, when he heard light footstep*, if some person was walking around the room. He could, us on every other occasion, only hear the sounds, but not fee anything.

The above are some of the main incidents that have taken place .there. Bmui-times it would tie continued rapping*, sometimes talking or whispering, groaning, walking, etc. Some old residents in the vicinity say thai this house has been haunted for twentv yeaispast. Sometimes a year would pass and nothing unusual would occur. It is also

MUid

there have been a large number of deaths in the house.

Red Tape in the Court of France. The following illustration is iriven of etiquette in ilie time of Ijouis XV. In the leen's apartment there were two chambers. 0«if day the teen saw a speck of dust on her b^d, and allowed it to Ma lame de Luynes, her maid of honor. The latter sent for the valet de charabre, bed-maker to the Queen, that hv in glit .'•how it to the valet de ehambiv, lietl-maker to the Kim Toe latter arrived at the end of an hour, but said the dust was none of his business ftec-iuse the bed-makers the King make up the uommm bed of the queen but were f'orbiddeu 'o touch the !tale bed. Consequently the dust mu*t be removed by the officers of the household. The Queen gave orders that they should be sent tor, and every day for two months she asked if the dust had been brushed off, but they had not yet found out whose du'y it was to remove the speek. Finally tiie "Queen took up a feather duster v»nd brus'ied it off. Great was the scandal thereof, but no one dreamed of blaming the ab*eiure of the officer* they only found that the ieen had been wauling in etiquette.

Scare in Georgia.

A funny story qomes from Columbus, Gi. it appears that Columbus has a dark and gloomy bridge and dire stories of Ku Klux outrages »re connected with iis midnight history. N »\v, a fertain white Republican of the city the other uight^beiated on one side of the river, was obliged to pass through this bridge to reach his In me- 8'ipping cautiouly and quietly along under the protection of tne s.iadow he reached its centre. It so happened that a negro who had stolen a p'ank on the other t-ide was likewise cautiously feeling his ty over the btidge, and-just in the daike?-t part of the sto'en pHnK stiuck th^ timid Oaueacion full in the face knocking him down. He arose aud fl -d one way. swearing to inquiring f.iend that the Ku Klux had a.-saulted bim, and that he wiil.v escaped witli his life. The negro dripped his plank and ule a clean shoot lor the other side, reporting that the Ku Klux had met liim the bridge, robbed htm and maltreated him iu the most fearful manner.

A Singular Phenomenon.

The Worcester, Massachusetts, Spy says: A singular electrical phenomenon is manifest at a dwelling on Pleasant street. In passiug around the room and rubbing the feet on the carpet a person becomes highly charged with electricity upon touching the register or any good conductor, a oriiliant spark ot large size is developed. The gas can be readily lighted by first turning it on, and then rubbing the feet ou the carpet and holding one finger over the jet.

A

spark

often darts from the feet wuen passing over certain places in the fl.)or, producing.-* painful sensation. Tne electiicity is only de\eloped by rubbing the feet on a irpet laid with Mauilla paper. When

three or four peraous take nold of hands "°A'

and walk around they all become powerfully charged, and the one first touching a couductor would not care to repeat the experiment. What peculiar arrange mem in a house is necessary to produce this phenomenon, and its influence on the health of its inmates, being constantly charged wifch electricity, is a question for the scientist. ^ROBERT

had been for several days watching at the bedside of Robert's sick father, went to sleep in their house near Carrolton on the night of the 30th ult., taking their inf.tnt child to bed with them. During the night the child crawled out of bed and fell to the floor, anil although its cries were heard by the neighbors, they failed to awake its parents. After some time spent in suffering the infant froze to death, and when the somnolent parents awoke iii the morning, they found that their child had been almost devoured •y rats.

Helminthology.

A

distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that ever} situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale Is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms iu the production of diseast and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency oi worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ol the animal economy, all tenu to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds havt been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permauentij expelling them iroui the human sytein. This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his timt had invested the nature of chest diseases thai any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form ol the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in Ills knowledge of remedies. Be drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhB and all the affections ol the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to man age any one of these chest troubles he fcnow* the value of the wild cherry he is acquainteo with its supreme virtues he is aware ol th« many potent agents which enter into the combination of Mkiward Wilder'i Compound Extract oj Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use

They died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in oui owi country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—every where at some timt| and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three grey actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. Tiit tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other knowii agents .so long as they exist, just BO long wih we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it bt uecessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all knowi agents for this purpose, uone Is to compare With Edward Wilder'* Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. They were esteemeo by the renowned physicians who had charge ol the skin department as well-specilic in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether ol rheumatic orscrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettie-ash,rose-ash, pimples, scrofula, ulcers, old sores, falling oi the hair, etfc. In all they did good, in ost they effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward Wilder'* darsaparitta and Potaah to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses viitues shared by no other combination of these substances. It Is a therapeutic marvel. Against all tbe disease at which it is aimed it is simply resistless it never fails. "TO" C~v TQ A will cause the bowels to be emptied, and I M-A M2U alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if th# medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterbacb. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it Is speedy. Purgatives in some slia e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple uisoniers of the system are benefitted by their use. Tiie great desideratum iu their admlnistra tiou lias been to get on«s which has either iaxa. live or purgative, as was needed—always luiio but always eihcieut—aud the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This hasat last been done.

this truly great medicine he is fully master OJ the situation He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cola, or catarrh. Hence eveiy lainily should always have this invaiuab medicine at hand.

Indigestion,

'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its baln to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of alltht disorders ol the stomach. It is also the mcti obstinate. It has been the most written about. .Nodisease presents such various, contrary, am. incompatible symptoms. They contradict aL ihelawsof order, constancy and inconsistency which regulate natural events they bother tin doctor, and can only be read by him who sil .ed in the book oi nature. It is self evident tiia the diheient forms of indigestion are to oe met by corresponding methods of cure. It has beeis said that the perfection of medicai skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, ana nevei can rest satisfied until he_ has overtaken. Edward Wilder'* ijtomuch Bitter*, their body beiiifc ihe purest of copper-distilled whisky, make? tbis object attainable alike to all. They are specilic— the disease speciiying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality OJ ihe disorder by a corresponding speciality oi cure. Thin hair is thickened, falling hair checked, and baldness often, though not always, cured by its use. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sediment, it will keep it clean and vigorous.' Its occasional use will prevent the hair from falling oft and consequently prevent baldness.
