But, thank God! it is yet more than this to be a widow. It is to feel that the soul which was part of your being on earth is an angel now to know that in the spirit land he yearns for your voice, your touch, your presence that even there his lips have not forgotten to syllable the sacred uame of "wife that his memory, pure aud true, guards and

Dnnn Piatt tells the following touching story. A Sunday school Superintenpeut, out in Alaska, treated his entire cn.irrfe to a sleigh ride. There were juct forty-oue of the cherubs and a six horse sleigh. On the way home they were beget by a pack of ferocious wolves. Cool and collected in that honr of fearful trial the Superintendent saw at a glance that he must soon be overtaken. In an Instant his quick miud grasped the only cuance oi escape. Poor Man's Darling. A TALE OF HARD TIMES.
Why did you leave me, Asthore M.icliree You were life, you were light, you were all to me Oh, our hearts are fafl, and our cot is lone, For we miss your face by. the old hearthstone.
We cannot laugh, for we do not hear Y-iur merry laugh, love, so solt and clear We never dan- as we danced of yore, When your feet beat the cabin floor.
But we gather round the fire at night, And the wnite wal.s gleam in the ruddy light There we see your clo il and your little chairBut oil, my darling, you are not there 1
Your pra.ver-bo^k is faded, old and brown— Here and there, as you left them, the leaves urued And oh, my darling, I ever trace Your fiugei-niarks some well-worn place.
Then each faded leaf I fondly ki«s: Uh, no relic of old is so dear as tt is And I weep, my darling when none are near, O'er the littie fingers that rested here.
My gentle Elly, you came to me 1 the coid dark hour of adversity We wereverv poor ut a jewel raie Shone on our heartn, love, when you were the- e. Dearer yon grew to our hearts each day— Every co.id, harsh thought, love, you smiled away And each want in our love we soon forgot. For you biouuht content to our humble cot.
Light was my heart as I toiled away. For I thought of ou as I ios»ed the hay And the tairest blossoms timt round me grew, My own little darling, I kept for you. Blithly I sang whe my toil was o'er, As 1 sauntered on to our cabin door For I saw in the shade of the old ash tree Your smiling face iooking out for me. All, me! how your sweet blueeyes would shine As I climbed ihe hill with yi.ur liaud in mine But you taike so wise thai you made me start And clasp you.^lose to my trembling heart. The golden Autumn glided past, And ihe dreaued Winter came at last Wh )e smaller each day grew our little store, Till the last had gone and we had no more.
Ivaty and Mary would cry for bread, But you laughed danced, love, and sang instead. Oh, dear little heart, ynu were kind and brave You knew there was none, oO you did not crave. You sang when your voice was faint and weak, When the bloom had faded from your fair, round cheen. In your tiny breast gnawed the hungry pain, But your lip*, my dear, would not complain. Oh, 'twas sweet to feel your soft arms twine, Aiid your warm young face pressing close to mi ne. "Are you hungry, love I would whisper low But you shook your head, and answered, "No!"
My darling! I saw you Jade a ny, Li teethe last soft glance of the closing day As the dying note'of 8 me magic strain Tnat charms the heart, then is hushed again. The shadows of death, love, dimmed your eyes. As the dark clouds passed o'er the sunny skies And the drooping lids o'er those sweet eyes fell At the .a-itsoft stioke of tao vesper bell. A little sigh—it was all 1 heard— Like the fluttering wing of a captive bird A .d a obbin voice, from beli.nd the bed, Baying "Father, father, i- Ellv de id?" —Chambers' Journal.
Widowhood.
"I think it must be a jolly thing to be a youug widow." I heard this remark the other day, in a group of laughing girls. I think I remember saying such a thing myself in the careless girlish times. Do you know, girls, what it is to a widow? It is to be ten limes more open to comment ami criticism than any clemoisel could possibly be. It is to have men gaze as you pass, first at you, then at your black dress, and then at your widow's cap, until your sensitive nerves quiver under the infliction. It is to have one ill-natured person say: "I won der how long *he will wait before she marries ayain?" and another answer "Until she gets a good chance, I sup-po.-e!" It is now and then to meet a glance of real sympathy, generally from the poorest and humblest women that you meet, and feel your eyes fill at the token, so rare that it is, alas! unlooked for. It is to have your dear fashionable friends to condole with you alter the following fashion "Oh, well it's a dreadful loss. We knew you'd feel it, poor dear." And in the next breath, "You will be sure to marry agaiu, and your widow's cap is very becoming to you."
was exhausted. But the brave fellow had economized his material nobly and besides, a whole Sunday school slows off a pack of wolves perceptibly. We have always noticed this. In another moment the sleigh dashed into the village, and the grand, noble, true-hearted man knew he was saved.
"MINERAL COTTON" is the name of a substance being exhibited in the South. It resembles spun glass in appearance, and is produced by pouring a jet of steam through a stream of liquid furnace slag. The slag is blown into flue threads, which are collected, and form the mineral cotton. It is proposed to use it as a nonconducting covering for steam boilers and pipes.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration has been to get on«s which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This has at last been done. Edwabd W ildkk's Fam

Hclminthology.
A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helmintliology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms, The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection vitli enfeebled and morbid states ol the animal economy, all tenc fo render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanent!} expelling them Irorn the human sytem. Ei WAKD WlLDISK'S MOTHEK'S WOKM fcSYKUP is true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is deiightlui, it* ellects are quick, its results unfailing. Dr. Laennec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaptto clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases thai any other physician who ever lived. Yet witl all his skill in detecting the nature and form ol the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consump tion, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections ol the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he kiiow the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of tin many potent agents which enter into the com bination of Edward Wilder'* Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use oj this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation. He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bron chitis he grapples wtth consumption, and sub dues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence ever} family should always have this invaluab medicine at hand.
Indigestion,
Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about, No disease presents such various, contrary, ana incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistent which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is sxl lied in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has beea said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case Its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscien tious physician pursues unceasingly, and nevei can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder'S Stomach BiUers, their body bein^ the purest of copper-distilled whisky, make*this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specilying the remedy, uot the remedy the disease. They are a combine tion of substances which meet the speciality oj the disorder by a corresponding speciality oi cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health.
Gaudianna River-
The British army when it advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, whicl. was followed by a retreat into the plains, losi more men by the malarial diseases contractec on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the int ading arm} was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are nc more common in Europe than in oui owi country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some tim» and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening Influence of miasm. The three greiM actors in this equation of disease are solar beat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. Tin tilo, if separated, are harmless together thej are more potent for evil than any other kuowi. agents so long as they exist, Just so long wih we have need of a m«*diciue ^hich will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it b« necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all knowi agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wilder's Chill Tonic, the master of ever} form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, alJ you who are suffering from any form of agut and fever or chills and fever, as a cure Is guaranteed in every case.
St. Louis Hospital, Paris.
This ancient institution is one ol the largest, and to the medical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adori the gay capitol of the French. It receives within Its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building Itset apart lor patients suffering with diseases ol the skin, and every patient, old or young, lb taking potash* in some Shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge ol the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether ol rheumatic or scrofulous or simple origin. Thej were given in tetter, ringworm, nettie-ash, roseash, pimples, scrofula, ulcers, old sores, falling oi the hair, etc. In all they did good, in li.ost thej effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward Wilder'* SarsapariUa and Potash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared by no other combination of these substances. It is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the disease at which it is aimed it is simply resistless it never fails. See to it that you suffer mot one day longer with any of the ills which it cures. Get it at once.
