From the San Diego (Cai.) Union, Jan. 11. WHALING NEAR SHOtfE.

IIow the San Diego Whulers Capture sind Convert their Pr\v—Exciiiug Sc nes—Extent of ihe Business.

Sinue our last report the whalers engaged in fishing in kelp have met with siicii success as equals their most sanguine expectations. Three whales, in additiou to those previously reported, have been caught, making thus far this season five, whose aggregate yield of oil will amouut to 230 barrels. Whales are now seen nearly every day outside of the heads, sometimes in schools aud often singly. On Saturday last fifteen were observed at once. Oil this day a large bull was harpooned, which gave its captors considerable trouble. Two others were fasteutd to the same day, but escaped. The day previous a good-sized bull was taken. On Sunday a large cow whale and calf were captured the calf being worthless for oil-making, was allowed to fl'at a way. The cow, however, was a fine catch, and being extremely fat, its tilubber will not yield less than seventy-five barrels of prime oil.

The method of taking the whale here is similar to that practiced by the crews of whaling vessels, with this difference: that the watch upon a whaler are always on the lookout and constantly on the ground usually frequented by the whales at this season of the year. When a whale is observed by the lookout upon a regular whaler, the call, "There she blows!'' is the sigual fir lowering and manning the boats No such excitiug scene is gone through by the San Diego whalers. The cry, "There she blows!" is to them the signal for bending to their oars and starting in instant pursuit. Not a moment is lost, everything being in entire readiness in expectancy of the welcome call. The last and largest whale captured this season, made an interesting chase. Herbiovvmg was observed by the crews of the four boats almost simultaneously. The moment she was seen the orders came quick and sharp from the boatswain in command, and at once the men bent to their oars with a will, making their boats bound over the water with such speed as would astonish a jireen hand. The whale, however, seemintrly unconscious of the close prnxiim of its would-be destroyers, at regular intervals sounded and returned to the surface to blow, evidently enjoying himself hugely. Soon the boats were up with the "mammoth of the d«ep," and uearly in reach of its ponderous flukes. Having pulled their craft into such a position as would allow the harpooneers to take good aim and to dart their lances with accuracy, the boat's crew lay on their oars, awaiting the signal to discharge their lances Soon it was given, and one bomb and three other lances were simultaneously discharged at the whale. If the speed of the boats when only impelled by the oars of the ew seemed immense, it now was almost startling.

No somier were the harpoons darted, than ofl'da^hed the whale ata furious rate. Sunt lines, however, towed the boats after it, and soon the fury of the wounded whale subsided, aud it lay upou the surface of the water an inanimate carcass. Alter the death of the whale, the danger and accompanying excitement being over, the work (no play work, but real genuine labor) must be performed by the boats crew. It is necessary to secure th* carcass, and to do this it must be towed t' nine sheltered place, where it may be cut i. The San Diego whalers have chosen Ballast Point fur this purpose its close proximity to the mouth of the harbor aud sheltered position rendering it the most advantageous poiut on the bay. After towing in the whale and dragging it as lar on shore as possible, the labors of the boat crews are finished. They then seek the kelp again, to lie in wait for more whales.

As soon as the captured whale has been, brought inside the point aud made secure, it is taken charge of by a force of thirty-four men, employed for the puro'' trying the oil from the blubber. These men are divided up into gaims, some of which are employed in slipping the blubber, othens in carrying, some attending to fires, &c. Two large vats or pots, with a capacity of one hunedaud fifty gallons each, are constantly li led with blubber from which the oil is rendered. The fuel used is principally ref se blubber, which makes a fine heat aid a villaiuous stench. The blubber, after ueiug stripped into pieces of from thirteen to six inches, is carried to these vats and thrown into them in such quantities as will nearly fill the vessels. The fires below are carefully watched and not allowed to get too low or burn too fiercely.

Two men stand by with long poles, whose duty it is to stir the boiling mass of blubber and keep it from burning, thus insuring a good quality of oil. At each pot is also a man with a larue strainer, who-e business it i» to fish out the pieces of blubber as fast as they are sufficiently "browned," and throw them into a vessel. From this they are taken to a machine aud subjected to a pressure whicv. compels them to yield all the.oil that is l«ft, in them. When the vats coritain a sufficient quautity of oil it is taken out with larie pot-ladles and poured into casks to cool. From these casks it is drawn otl into others for shipment to San Francico. Some ideaof the importance of the whalim buiness at this poclmay be furmed from the quautity of oil exported last year. Although the business is yet in its infancy, tbe export of oil amounted in 1871 to 21,88S gallons. Already this season 7,500 gallons have been made, and the prospects for a shipment greatly in excess of the previous year are very encouraging.

Triiks of Trade.

It is said there are "tricks in all trades," and we believe it. Here i.-Mfe, devflopenient in this direction, which the reader can add to his present stock nf f. cts proving the truth of the old a lage: "jNje.v.er you buy a fat pi« at JSTew York," was the advice given us by one who had been there. "And why not a fat pig?" "'Cause, you see, they fat 'em too fast for the New York market sometimes." *.. "How so?" "Why, you see, some of them west country dealers fetch their pias in pretty nigh skin and bone. Well, jest afore fair day they Kivea'eui corn aud salt—1 LfcLANK DEF'^, neatly printed, io- sale bj nolhiu' butJeJ com aud salt-uo swill,,

'Sposen on an average they swallow about a pail apiece. That makes 'em look all filled out, aud slftk and heavy, I tell you but there aint no heart aud substance in it. You carry one of 'em ere critters home, aud calcu late you've got a biisteriu' pile of pork but jest you look in your ho«-pen next morning', and you won't find nothin but a hog frame, skin and bone, and dear at that. You can't tell me nothin' about fat pig« I've been there, and I've seen 'em manufactur'd."

ALAIN E. SANDERSON, of Sunderland, Mass., recently did so mean a thing as to cause the arrest of his mother on trumped-up charge of stealing his shovel aud tongs, he Judge dismissed the case with a sharp reprimand of the untilial son.

So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some slia e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are in curable without them and all of the simple uisorders of the system are benefitted by their use.

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaptto clear up the mysteries which before his timt had invested the nature of chest diseases thai. any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form ol the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to man age any one of these chest troubles he know."the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of tlu many potent agents which enter into the com bination of Edward Wilder•* Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use OJ this truly great medicine he is 1'uJly master oi the situation, He has no fear in the presence

croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence everj tainily should always have this invaluab medicine at hand.

Indigestion,

'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its bain. to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all tht disorders of the stomach. It is also the mobi obstinate. It has been the most written about. jNo disease presents such various, contrary, anc incompatible symptoms. They contradict ali the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency wiiich regulate natural events they bother tht doctor, and can only be read by him who it s4iii.ed in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the diflierent forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has beea said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its indwiduai cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and nevej can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distil led whisky, maket this object attainable alike to all. Gaudianna River-

The British army when it advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, whicL was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands U1 Europe believed that the invading armj was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are nc more common in Europe than in oni owi country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some timt and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three gre»! actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. Tht tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it bt necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all knowi agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wilder's Chill Tonic, the master of ever} form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case.

St. Louis Hospital, Paris.

This aneient institution 1B one ol the largest, and to the medical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adorn the gay capitol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set apart ior patients suffering with diseases ol the skin, and every patient, old or young, is taking potash in some shape, and Honiara*sarsapariila in some iorm. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge ol the Bkin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic or scrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nett/e-ash, roseash, pimples, scrofula, ulcers, old sores, falling oi the hair, etc. In all they did good, in ost they effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward Wilder's SarsapariUa and Potash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared by no other combination of these substances. It is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the disease at wnich it is aimed It is simply resistless it never fails.
