MACALLISTER held forth at Dowling Hall last evening, to a very respectable sized audience, and appeared to please all. He is by far the best magician that visits this city.. Many of his tricks are new, and his outfit is first-class. His presents are articles of use. Go and see him.
Fashion and Comfort.
There are some people, especially women, who would sacrifice themselves on the Shrine of fashion—the fashion of discomfort and ill-health—so long as they ot their children wore clothes of fashionable make. How it pained the observer, yesterday, to see a lady strolling upon Main street, attired in all the gewgaws aud fripperies of the latest fashion book, while by her side walked a poor little boy, evidently her son and apparently not more that five or six years old his hair was long, and he was dressed 1n some cotton velver stuff, something after the idea of a stage court page, while he carried a little bass-headed cane—all the time the poor little fellow was shivering and chattering with cold. He would gladly have parted with his cane and feathered cap for a pair of warm stockings. But, no! the poor mother, whose husband works for a pittance of some eighteen or twenty dollar* a week, must needs keep up with the fashion or perish with cold ia the attempt. And so it is, from day to day, fashion keeps people in the most abject slavery and personal discomfort. In some cases, it might truly be said— fashion makes cowards of us all—even more so than conscience. But, thank heaven, there are sensible people in the world, and the number is increasing every day, so, kind reader, with your per-r mission, we will call your attention to another pieture. A little girl—we won't wait to describe her dress—with comfort written all over her, from the warm little hood on her head, to thewooleu leggings on her feet, and what a happy, bright, merry little face that wasthatshe looked out at us, from that becoming litttle hood! What sparkling, dancing eyes^ What titles of red, healthy blood coursed beneath the transparent skin! What ease and grace in her motion! She was, what a healthy, neat, happy child always is, a beautiful sight for the eye to rest upon, and we said, thank God, that little girl has a sensible mother! It is an evidence that we are nearing the millen-. ium that the number of women who dress ctiildren for style instead of comfort is each year growing less. We can never expect strong healthy miuds in weak, unhealthy bodies. And, we would say to the women who are foolish euoqgh to continue the practice, that, if it is necessary for the peace of your mind to make such a display of your wonderful taste and skill, choose something that hasn't tender flesh to be chilled, limbs to be cramped, health to be lost, and a heart t.o suffer. Get a doll, exhaust all your ingenuity ou it, plice it iu your front parlor wiudow, or label it and hire some one to carry it through the streets, but have some mercy, some pity for your child. Do not make monkeys or scarecrows of your children, but dress them warmly, deeeutly and cdmfqrtobly, andi throw ^tshioQ to tbe dqgs.

Half Sermon—Half Advertisement. If there is any disposition on the part of any young men in this community to think that success in business can ever come from "the tricks of trade," we wish to undeceive them. Success in any legitimate kind of business can only come from the practice of correct principles iu the management of that business. Wealth is generally, not always, the reward of virtue, and usually represents economy, perseverance, honesty, sobriety, chastity and close application to business. We are certain that our anility to sustain ourselves under the adverse circumstances with which we have had to contend in Terre Haute, and the remarkable increase in the amount of our business is to be attributed entirely to the fact that no enemy, howsoever bitter, has ever been able to place his finger on a single trick iu the management of our business. FOSTER BROTHERS,

Magnificent Stock of Notions. We passed through the mammoth notion establishment of U. R. Jeffers & Co., Maiti street, this morning, aud as we anticipated, feasted our optics ou a most magnificent array of goods of all kinds pertaining to a wholesale notion establishment. These gentlemen, with the Enterprise which characterises Terre Haute merchants in general, and this financial and business firm in particular, have forced the season and secured a splendid stock of goods in their special line ait the lowest prices, which will enable them to offer bargain sales to their hundreds of customers throughout the vast territory they supply. While it is yet winter, their capacious and well-known notion establishment is receiving all the spring styles in inexhaustible quantities.
Though their large rows of shelves, and commodious and substantial counters are weighed down with goods, it will be two weeks before the entire stock ordered, will be in, though this stock arrives and is stowed away by the car load each day—except Sunday What is to be done with that which comes iu the future we will leave in charge of the firm, as we could not see where any more could be packed or stowed anywhere from "turret to foundation." As to the quality of the goods, all that it is necessary to say, iis that these gentlemen won't have any but the best. feb6tf
Removal.—Lockwood has removed his tin shop to Cook's new building on Fourth street. He would be pleased to see all his old friends and as many new ones as see proper to call. All kinds of roofing, spouting and small job work done at the lowest rates. febd3tf
REV. WM. GRAHAM, of N. W. Ind. Conference, says "BARB'S PECTORAL ELIXIR acts like a charm."
A BARBER SHOP.—The Elegant Barber Shop, situated on the corner of Fifth and Main streets, is for rent. This is one of the most desirable Barber Shops in Ihe •city, and a first ra b.irber can not fail to make money in it, if he will attend promptly to his business.
..
The Clearance Sale, now advertised by Tuell, Ripley & Demiug, is an event deserving more than passing notice. They want to close out their winter goods entirely, and they have gone about it in earnest. It will be seen by an in speetion of their stock that they must have marked everything down to cost, to biftfer the bargains they nOW do.

The superiority of these Bars ovei ners is owing to the distribution of the metal in such a manuer that all strain in consequence ot expansion from heat is relieved, so that they will neitbp warp nor break. They give, also, inoreaii surface for draft, and are at least one-third lighter than any other Bars, and save 15 to 30 pei cent, in fuel. They are now iu use in more than 8,000 places, comprising some otflargest steamships, steamboats and manufacturing companies in the UnitedStates. Noalternation of Furnace requh ed. BARBAROUX & CO.,
