PERSONAL JOURNALISM.—According to the

Mirror

of that city, Indianapolis

"personal journalism has been revived among the quill and scissors fraternity wish an ardor that is not to be despised. Opprobrious epithets not to be found in the latest edition of 'Webster' would command a high price in this market at the present time."

leurn that the in

fant Express has again come to life, and will run three days in the interest of the Wallace Sisters. It is still quite feeble from its recent severe attack, and three days will try its strength. It has busted every show that has had anything to do with it this winter, but we hope it will not do so in this case.

AT

DANVILLE.—The

Diinville Indianan says that "the other day we experienced what we took to be a slight shock of an earthquake, but upon further inquiry we were sorry to learn that the delicate little lady across the way, Mrs. Powers, weighing only 640 pounds, had been so unfortunate as to make a misstep and fall on the ice. She has sustained considerable injury, but as far as we have heard nothing serious."

CHEERING INFORMATION.—The Iudianapolis -Sentinel says that "an autograph letter from John Quincy Adams, addressed to the Governor.of the State of Indiana, dated from Washington, D. C., April 9,1819, was discovered among some old documents in the Secretary of State's office yesterday. The letter communicated the cheerful intelligence that ten copies of the Second Session of the Fifteenth Congress had been forwarded for the use of the State of Indiana." Ifthose documents were as sensational and newsy at that time as thev are now, the above letter must have been very refreshing.

THE INDUSTRIAL MONTHLY.—Thisexcellent journal for Feuruary is at hand. As usual, it contaius a large amount of valuable information ou a variety of subjects especially interesting to mechanics, manufacturers, builders, inventors, engineers, architects, aud, in facf, to all who feel an interest iu any of the branches of handicraft. A prominent feature of this periodical is, that it is copiously and beautifully illustrated, and altogether gotten up iu a mt»t perfect and attractive manner. Among the contents of the present number we find articles on Circular SUears for Sheet Metals, Hints to Inventors, Floor-warming, How to Make Good Mortar, Cheap Homes for the People, IUilway Notes, Practical Notes, and a i^ood deal of other interesting matter. The subscription price is put at the merely nominal figure of $1.50 per year clubs of three and under five, §1.25 per year. In order that this journal may become extensively known, the publishers will send it to auy one for three months as a trial-trip, for twenty-five cent*. The

Rev. Mr. Howe: DEAR SIR—I

the sermon preached by you upon Sunday, February 5th, in certain passages of which my friends think you intended to be personal to myself and to our firm. There is nothing condemnatory that I can find in your sermon that could, with any appearance of truth, be applied to us, but, inasmuch as it does contain certain passages that have an undue significance imparted to them inconsequence of th^ir echoing in almost precise words the charges of certain of our competitor.*, and inasmuch as it is important that if I sim to continue to sit under your ministrations cordial sympathy and mutual repeat should exist between us, I am led to ask of you an answer to the following questions:

Did your sermon of yesterday have in it anything condemnatory intended to be personal to me, or to the firm of which lam member—anything that was intended to censure, or in anyway cast rep loach upon myself our firm, or our method of doing business

Did your sermon contain any remarks that when you wrote them you felt certain or nearly certain, a large portion, if not a majority of your congregation, would think were intended to apply personally to myself, or to the firm of which lama member?

Very truly yours, D. N. FOSTER,

reply to ypur note, I

will say, that, while it has ever been a principle with me never to destroy any little force which there may be in my preaching by declaring, either publicly or privately, that anything therein is fo be undei stood in a "Pickwickian sense,1 yet it was far from my purpose to make any personal allusion to you or your lira), and the question whether a "majority of my congregation," or -anybody in it, would think the remarks intended for you or your firm,, never entered my mind either when I wrote or delivered the sermon. I have no reason to suppose that this community, or my congregation have reached such a standard of Christian integrity that there either was or was supposed to be, any monopoly, by a single firm, of "dishonesty, or ot deceiving the people by word of mouth or by false advertisements." If my language was a precise echo of the charges publicly made against you by your competitors, as you affirm, it was unintentional on my part.

You must remember that what I said on the points named in your note, was merely iu illusiration of the principle which I was discussing. In fact, my dear sir, while the jealousy of your friends in reference to your reputation does great credit to their hearts, yet I must think that their friendship made them over sensitive. So far as your enemies are concerned, if there be suclj, I suppose it is the same old sfbry of listening to sermons in the interest of neighbors rather than for personal benefit. And so it happens for near the thousandth time that I am chagrined at finding that the great truth which I attempted to enforce was missed altogether, while a mere illustration steps to the front and claims ail attention.

Trusting that my explanation will be satisfactory, 1 remain Your friend and pastor,

E. FRANK HOWE.

A Good Movement.

As will be seen by reference to our Congressional report, Senator Morton on yesterday offered a resolution in relation to the manufacture of Bessemer, steel, and said he would call it up at an early day, and would submit his remarks on the superiority of Indiana for making steel, aud the importance of improving the harbor at Michigan City, Indiana, so a«. to bring the iron mines of Lake Superior into more direct communication with the coal fields of Indiana.

We are pleased to note this new departure of the "war Governor." It looks like that he had some little interest in the welfare of the State which has done so much for him. It may in a measure serve to convince the people of thi3 State that their Senator has their interests more at heart than many of them anticipated. At least it is truly refreshing to see an "able representative of the people" lay aside the practices ©f an accomplished demagogue and take a practical interest in the welfare of his constituency. Let Mr. Morton follow this matter up persistently and advocate it with the ability he is noted for,aud the movement will no doubt be a success.
