From the Knoxville (Tenn.) Press. CAVING IN.
The Bottom Falling Out of Knoxville— A Mystery. The steamer J. C. Luttrell was stationed at the foot of Clinch street, on First creek, on yesterday morning, and set to work to throw water through a line of hose up to the new cistern lately built on Clinch street, west of Gay, for the purpose of filliug it with water. The engine worked beautifully, pumping one huudred and eighty gallon per minute, equal to thirtyfive toufc*per hour, according to the calculations of the city engineer. The cistern is divided into two sections by a strong partition wall. After the engine had worked for several hours the depth of water in the cistern was tested and found to measure seven feet ten inches. Shortly after, or about 3:30 o'clock P. M., the water in the westernmost division of the cistern suddenly disappeared to the astonishment of all who were aware of it. The engine was stopped as quickly as possible, and a negro went down into the now almost dry cistern to investigate the cause of the trouble. On returning to terra firma he reported that a large portion of the western end of the floor of the cistern had given way, leaving a. hu^e cavernous opening down which the water had gone glimmering.
This is only another evidence of the cavernous condition of the hill upon which Knoxville is founded and of which we have several times spoken in the past. Similar occurrences have at different times occurred in different parts of the city the most notable iustance was that of the dropping out of the bottom of the cistern in the rear yard of the Lamar House, some twelve or fifteen years ago. Many of our citizens wiil remember the amazement of the frightened Irishman who scrambled up out of the cistern to tell the story of his lost mattock, which, having struck through, slipped from his hand and dropped to depths unl^nown. That cistern, though its bottom, has never been found or restored, has proved quite valuable to the hotel as a sewer,^.always ready to receive, and discharging"ffd contents no one knows where.
Numerous instances of a similar character might be cited, but we care not to excite needless apprehensions amongjth6 less righteous of our readers, that the rale" of Kroth is about to overtake them, We are too well arched beneath, no doubt to fear a general caving in, for yet a lit* tie while longer, at any rate. .j.
K«w to Lire long. li
They live longest, as a class, who lead calm and even lives, mentally and physically who are most exempt from the turmoils and shocks and strains Which are incident to human existence, and who are assured of te-morrow'sbread. There, is no one thing, aside from the blessed-, ness of an explicit reliance on the Providence of Qod, which has such a direct influence in promoting longevity as an assurance, felt to be well grounded of a comfortable provision for life, for all th.Q ordinary wants of our station. Not long ago a mau died in a poor-house in Eugland, where he had been taken' care of for ninety years he had ho anxie ties for to-morrow's bread he ha,d ho quarter's day to provide against in default of which wife and cthiicfreiL would be turned into the street from the doors of the elegant brown ston* man-, sion. He had no notes to meet in bank, which if not paid by a day and an hour, would involve protest and financial ruin. Ah, this load ot debt, how it grinds one's manhood to powder how it agonizes the seusitive heart how it shames a man's honor how it has driven men to desperation, to drunkenness, to suicide, to murder! How the anguish ot it takes the energy aud health out of a man, and makes him pine and languish for weary days and weeks upon beds of thorns, which pierce through the body, into the soul 1
So, one good way to avoid sickness fctid premature death is to avoid debt as you would the devil.—Jlall'a
ffealth.

The Power of Mind.
"Soragg,'* is a famons old blood-hound belonging'to the Duke of Aberdeen. Being desirous to secure his likeness, his, owner sent him to the studio of Sir Edwin Laudseer, under the charge of keeper, who was the only on* who bad the least control over him. No sooner had the wild hound entered the studio than he took refuge under a sofa, growling and snarling at all who approached, nor could his keeper appease him in the least. At length Sir Edwin, draw* ing near, spoke to the savage, beast in terms of concil at ion, betraying no symptoms of fear, but ually raising his voice, alt the while keeping bis eye steadily fixed on thatof the hound. Slowly, and at first with evident reluctance, did old Scragg besrin to crawl from beneath the sofa, aud at last dragged himself, like a serpe&t to
r«i»-
the very feet of Sir Edwin, who, talking to him all the while almost ill a vrhisper, managed to hit off his likenesa in a very short space of time. Strange to say, the animal, subdued during the whole of the sitting, turned savage as sooh as he had passed out of the studio.
Sparrows.—The following case shows the readiness with which swallows combine against their foes. In 1832 a pair of swallows built their ne9t under the eaves of a house at Hampton Court. A pair of sparrows got possession of the home, and the swallows were* unable to expel the impudent intruders. But when the usurpers had to leave the nest in search of food for their young, then came the time for revenge. "During the short absence of the sparrows a number of swallows tore down the nest from the wall, and left the unfortunate young ones to perish, thus proving that even birds may sometimes suffer through the faults of their parents.

taken into the stomach. Bo said the. great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some shaie, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in theli administration has been to get on which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—^and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue-its use. This has at last been done. Edwakd Wildkb'SFamily
Pills fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched with fever andfequires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.
Helminthology.
A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all tend to render Cheih&n object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the stu&y of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them from the human sytem. Edwakd

Dr. Laennec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form oi the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughB, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of

Indigestion,

'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood/' is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is sallied in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has beea said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its indi ridual cure. This is the objlct which every consclen tious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken.
