Tfcs~ InilianirpolTs "Evening'_Arae$"ia: itorially says: Th(T vastrt!eIt'S oF bio ck' "co£ 1' Tri oiff State will do Indianapolis little good if it cannot be delivered here at a cheaper rate. It is folly to talk about competing with Pittsburg, when manufacturers there can get coal at from six to nine cents per bushel, while here they would have to pay from twelve to eighteen. As long as we are dependent upon the great through lines for coal the price will be kept up. What we need is a local road, and we believe this could easily be built if some of our leading citizens would start the enterprise. It only requires a good starter and the people will follow. Terre Haute is branching out, New Albany is building more roads, and if we do not do something, Indianapolis will be outstripped.

By the above it will be seen that the mammoth railroad and other worthy enterprises on a large scale of Terre Haute, are waking the people of the Capital up to the importance of being up and doing lest they be outstripped in enterprise and consequent wealth by the city of Terre Haute, which is "branching out." Indeed, our beautiful prairie city is branching out and extending her trade in every direction, while the wealth of the country around about is pouring" into her lap in great abundance with her increased facilities, the result of her jnterprise.

Though the Capital is at present the railroad center of the State, and population considered, of the West, she must look to her laurels or she will be eclipsed by the oil city on the Wabash, which even now, the population of the two cities considered, is her equal. With the completion of the Cincinnati & Terre Haute and the Terre Haute & Southwestern railroads, the mineral wealth of southeastern Indiana and southwestern Illinois will be rolled in upon us, bringing wealth and increase of prosperity with every revolution of the hundreds of revolving car wheels which will bear their precious freights into our midst. With the increase of railroad facilities a city prospers in all ways, however onerous the tax may seem at first, without which we would have no public improvements and no increase of the general prosperity. Even the Capital city, with her vast net work of railroads, is not satisfied, and seems bent on the construction of anew road to the coal fields.

In this commendable movement we feel that she will succeed for the mighty power of the press is in full support with the enterprise, with which all things are possible and highly probable and without which public enterprises of whatsoever character, languish. Indianapolis, iu this most worthy enterprise, has the well, wishes of her sister city of Terre Haute, which being fully awakened to the importance of railroads, rejoices to see other cities likewise.

To Supply a Need Loug IVIt. We are pleased to learn that our friend, W. C. Ijuntin, the good-looking and genial proprietor of the magnificent wholesale and retail drug establishment in Deming's mammoth block, corner Main and Sixth streets, is doing well in the East. He is now attending the grand Philadelphia College Pharmacy, where he is devoting his time and talent perfecting himself in the science of chemistry and pharmacy, with a view of supplying a need long felt in the drug business in his native city, Terre Haute, viz: Qualifying himself for compounding various preparations for sale, with his own hands. To do this, he denies himself the society of a young, accomplished and beautiful wife, and most interesting couplet of his own flesh and blood. His wife and twins are now in Missouri visiting his father-in-law, while he is vigorously persecuting his studies, and putting them into practice at the institution named above, as an evidence of his success, and the practiced results ©f his studies, we notice several very valuable compounds at his gorgeous drug establishment on Main street, which he prepared at the

culiar characteristics of these peculiarly interesting people were excellent. All the characters did extremely well. As a matter of course, however, Riggs was the central figure in this piece and as an impersonator of the comical and tragic of Irish nature, he has but very few rivals. In short, the play was a good one, and was most satisfactorily rendered. Colleen Bawn this evening. Reserved seats can be secured at B. G. Cox's.

PERSONAL.—Rev. James Hill, pastor of Asbury M. E. Church, this city, was at Indianapolis yesterday.

James O. Woodruff, of Auburn, New York, and connected with the Holly Water Works, accompanied by his accomplished lady, is visiting friends at Indianapolis. Mr. Woodruff is well and favorably known here.

As to this occasion, however, there were but two Terre Haute persons present, both of whom have traveled much, and seen a great deai more than the News man ever read of, heard of, dreamed of, or witnessed.^ Had they never been outside of Terre Haute they would have seen a much more elegant and magnificent Temple of Music than the Academy at Indianapolis.

We claim to sell three dollars, where "the A. T. Stewart of Terre Haute," sells one, and we challenge him to a comparison of sales to decide the question. "The A. T. Stewart of Terre Haute," as applied to the proprietor of the "Deserted Palace," sounds tairly well in Indianapolis, but repeated here, has much the same effect as would one of Artemus Ward's best jokes.
