WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24,1872.

City and Neighborhood.

CLEAR and cold.

THE coopers give a ball soon.

NOT a small-pox case in town, that we know of.

EVANSVILLE this season.

WHY don't the Terre Haute gas works blow up as did those of Richmond last evening? They have been "blown up" frequently enough of late by those who patronize them.

ROCHESTER has a man whose nose is so crooked that during pleasant weather his friends hook his proboscis over a limb during the night, where he slumbers until the "dawns early light" in blissful sleep.

THE Second Presbyterian Church, Rev. B. Condit pastor, had eight admissions of new members Sunday, all the result of the week of prayer. Let the good work continue there and all will be well with them.

THE Grand Lodge of the order of Knights of Pythias of Indiana, are in session at Indianapolis, Terre Haute being represented for the first time. This because of the organization of the Occidental Lodge No. 18, recently.

ARRAII-NA-POGITE, is the title of the piece in which Mr. T. G. Rigga will appear as "Shaun, the Post" tlii3 evening, at Dowling Hall. He will be supported 1 iti the presentation of this excellent piece by'the Indianapolis Academy of Music

Company. A HI'SINKSS house in town has out a red flannel sign. It is very amusing to see cautious ruralists shy around the Vermillion color, laboring under the delusion that it is an evidence- of small-pox within. We venture the assertion that house has not had much country trade of late. ..

ACQUITTED.—Col. L. D. Watson, proprietor of the Watson House, Evansville, was on yesterday acquitted of the murder of James P. Shyrock in that city sometime since. It appears that Shyrock and Watson had some difficulty or altercation, when the latter shot the former, from the effects of which he died recently.

THE street cars are doing a very good business this cold weather, as they always do. Uulike Evansville and LaFayette, the street railroad of Terre Haute prospers, and is alike a beueflt to stockholders and citizens, also a very great convenience to the traveling public. Under the superin tendency of Mr. George Palmateer the road has prospered.

THE most readable daily newspaper in the city, is what they call the Evening GAZETTE—at 15 cents per week.

THE City Council will meet again next Tuesday evening, when that vexatious gas'question will be gased about.

THERE is a police justice at Miskawka, this State, who preserves order in tris court by the aid of a navy revolver. He \s the most orderly court of any justice race, lie certainly is the ablest and most in Indiana.

"Shin Faiie."

"Shin Fane" was repeated At fowling Hall, last evening, to a good house. The entertainment was even better than on the former evening. Mr. Riggs, as a delineator of the characteristics of the Irish race, is accomplished to a degree very rare of attainment. His representations are so life-like that very many of the more cultivated of the Emerald Isle, who now reside here, are carried back in memory to the scenes of their childhood days. This characteristic feature of this pretty piece was more noticeable last evening than the evening previous: that there is

an opportunity for the "star" to

carry off much of honor or criticism. This*is to be regretted in some respect, for there is considerable talent in the Academy company at present, which our theater-goers wish to see brought out, and which will be developed ere the present engagement closes, we feel assured. However, all who participated last evening did themselves as much credit as they had an opportunity to do. "Arrah-lia-Pogue" this evening.

Tlie Royal Cub Comelli,

We are pleased to learn from the Indianapolis papers that the royal cub is not to return to his native country until iie has scented, at least from afar off", the fragrant perfumes of the Terre Haute artesian wells, and the sweet and ravishing fragrance of Pogue's run, which have so long been the admiration of the traveling world. It is thought that he will pass through both of these great cities en route to the mammoth cave, where he, true to the instinct of his kind, will go into winter quarters, and suck his paw until spring. This he will do if he is like unto other bears. We trust as he hies himself hence that the Fort Harrison Guards will parade, headed by the infantile band, in honor of his great achievements on the plains, where he bravely dispatched a broken legged and dispeptic female bison, which was firmly bopnd down to the earth with strings of raw hide. This youth should be shown the highest.of military honors, and wo have faith that the guards will not be direlict in duty on this important occasion

PERSONAL.—We regret to learn of the illness of Judge Long, of the Criminal Court.

The Evansville Journal says Our friend and former associate, Isaac Herr, has purchased Reese P. English's interest in the office of the Brazil Miner, and will have entire control .of its editorial columns. He starts out rigbt( and we wish him success in the field he proposes to cultivate." "The Stewart of Terre Haute," is what the Indianapolis Sentinel calls W. S. Ryce, of the Buckeye Cash Store, this city.

Hon. H. D. Scott, Col. John Baird and others, are in attendance at the Prairieton T. H. & S. W. Railroad meeting today.

Joe. Erlanger, the great merchant tailor, is iu St. Louis. President Tuell, of the T. H. & S. W R. R., accompanied by Messrs. Forrest and Cookerly, attend a meeting in favor of the above road at Prairieton to-day.

FRED. DOUGLASS.—Friday evening, of this week, the grand Opera House will be again opened to the public, on the occasion of the first appearance of Fred. Douglass, thereat. This distinguished gentleman is a man who all of our citizens should see and hear for of all his

experienced. Being himself a man of color and once a slave, he no doubt better represents the colored portion of our national population than any other man who ever lived. He, however, has chosen for his subject upon this occasion, "San Domingo," on which subject he is well

before, and wherever delivered has met with enthusiastic applause from vast audiences, and flattering praise from the press. We hope he will have a large at tendance hero. Reserve seats at B. Cox's book store.

BENHAM'S MUSICAL REVIEW.—The January number begins the seventh vol ume, and presents its subscribers with a fine portrait of M'lle. Carlotta Patti, and three pieces of new music—"My Heart is Thine," song and chorus, "Christmas Bells March," and "How the Gates came Ajar," arranged for the piano or organ—in value worth more than the whole year's subscription, which is ex tremely low at $1.00 per year. Every lover of musie, or of good reading, ought to take this excellent journal. Sample copies, containing $2.00 worth of music mailed on receipt of ten cents. Address Benham Bros., Indianapolis, Ind.

THE Great Fires of Chicago and the Northwest are being explained at Bloomington by that truly great bore, Prof, J. L. Gay, who afflicted this city with the same insipid production some time since. If the great fires of

Chicago

and

the Northwest produced such a desire on the part of thove near by to leave the scene of their woes, as the Doctor's lecture does on the part of an audience, there certainly must have been a very 9trong desire manifested to let the places that once knew them kjiow. them no more.

THE New Albany Ledger, Indianapolis Journal, and the Terre Haute GAZETTE, stated that E.

S. Stokes, the mur

derer of Jas. Fisk, Jr., had a brother who acted as baggageman on the New Albany, Salem & Chicago R. R. Mr. W. B. Stokes noticing this disparaging statement in the Ledger, made his will, prepared himself for a fuueral ceremony, aud forthwith went in search of the vile libeller of the Ledger, who took it all back. Mr. W. B. Stokes will hereby take notiee that we'll take it back also, as we don't want to see him.

Foster Brothers' magnificent stock of winter goods is being cut down at a rate so rapid as to greatly surprise the highpriced stores, which are in the habit of "eating the bread of idleness" during what they term "the dull months" of January and February. The superiority of these Bars oveim ers is owing to the distribution of the metal in such a manner that all strain in consequence ot expansion from heat is relieved, so that they will neither warp nor break. They give, also, more air surface for draft, and are at least one-third lighter than any other Bars, and save 15 to 30 per cent, in fuel.
