True Story fEnoch Arden. An exchange says we have had c.o many versions of Enoch Arden, that the identity of that individual has become like tired wool, considerably mixed, George Harding, tlie renowned author of the blue bird story, comes to the rescue, and says that Enoch, the original Enoch, was a sailor of Moroni, Sullivan county, and ran a horse terry bout over the Wabash. Ho and Phiilip Ray courted the same gal, but Enoch, having lather better looking, got away with Phillip, who turned misanthrope, retired to a cavo in the bluff, and lived on acorn-!, "sang" and fresh water clatn.-, which lie took from the shores of the Wabash at low tide. The day was set for the marriage, and Enoch iuvested his savings in a suit of yaller jeans and a new coonskin cap, whiie the bride' sent to Tarryhut for a trousseau. But the course of true love is tortuous. There came along dry spell, and the people instead of patronizing the ferry waded the Wabadi. Enoch's business was broken up, and to mend .his broken fortunes he shipped before the mast as coxswain on a broadhorn, and started down the liver. The noble vessel, after weathering a terrific storm, was wrecked on Paw paw island, and all the crew, with the exception of Enoch, perished in the briny deep. Enoch clung to a b»rrel of salt pork and was swept ashore, where he was taken prisoner by a band of pirates, who apprenticed him to the shoemaker of the band. For many years

Enoch hammered leather on the island, occasionally looking out from under a plum tree to see how the land lay. In the meantime there came a longdry spell, aud Enowii, who had by this time so excelled in his profession that the pirates could not have been inducedto give him up at any price, waded ashore with his kit of tools around his neck, tirst having killed and skinned the pirate captain. Once ashore, Enoch struck a bee line for Merom, where he arrived just in time to interrupt the weddiiig of Phillip Ray—Enoch's bride, thinking him dead, having yielded to Philip's solicitations. Enoch promptly put a head on Mr Ray, and the latter gentleman again re* tired to his hole in the bluff and his diet of clams. Having little muscle he took to mussels. Enoch then carefully tanned the pirate's skin and made a pair of boots out of it, in which, after exhibiting at the county fair, he stood up to be married. He then went to Indianaolis, where he distinguished himself as the greatest artist in leather of his day.

From tht Gold Hill (Nevada) News. Of Course He Knew Her. A little incident occurred in front of the International Hotel, Virginia City, a few days ago, which is worth the room of a local to relate. There resides in Gold Hill a married man—a tall, goodnatured Scotchman—whose wife went on a visit to the East some eight months ago. Tne nights becoming rather cold lately, the husband imploringly wrote to his wife to return home—that he had had enough of the life of a Washoe bachelor, aud he wanted no more of it. A couple of weeks ago she wrote him a letter that slve would leave for home, and that he might expect- her to arrive in Virginia City"on a certain day. At the appointed time our warm-blooded Gold Hiiler (who had scarcely talked to any living woman since his wife left for the East), anxiously waited on the sidewalk in ifront of the stage office to embrace his long absent wile and several of his friends noticing his impatience, inquired the cause, when lie enthusiastically informed them that he expected his dear wife, who had been absent for eight long months, and he would be so happy when she arrived —that it would be equal to getting married again—and he was sure she was on the incoming stage, as she wrote exactly the day she would start for home, and it took just so many days on the cars, aud the time was up, etc. The stage arrived and drew up in front of the lnternutional Hotel, where our friend had already engaged a comfortable chamber, as he knew that his wife must be tired and sleepy alter such a long journey, etc. The passengers all got off the coach except one lady on the

ba-'k seat, who was deeply veiled and had on a thick, checked shawl. Our Gold Hill friend made a rush into tie stage to embrace and kiss his wife— he knew it was her by the check shawl she had on, as it as the one she left home in—and just as he wasabout throwing his arms around her neck, and pushing her heavy brown veil aside to get a good smack at her lips, a deep, sonorous voire from under tiie veil exclaimed: "Never mind, chile I kin git out. mvsef, I kin!" Horror of honors! could such a thing be that it. was not the 1 ng-ex-pected wife? The would-be husband withdrew from the stage, aud put'ou

bounced a big fat colored woman of at least two hundred and fifty pounds in weight, and throwing aside her veil, she cast a terrible pair of black eyes at the intruder, with this remark: "You can't fool dis gal afore all dis crowd." The disappointed husband asked the crowd into Capt. Vesey's saloon to take a drink provided the whole thing was kept a secret—which has been strictly observed. His wife has since arrived, and he is happv, but he swears he will burn up that check shawl she wore when she left home. No more check shawls for him.

not make it necessary to continue its use. This has at last been done. EDWAKD WILDER'S FAMILY PILLS fulfill all the requirements of the case. They are a laxative, yet sure purgative, yet roild. In small doses, they meet the first want: in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity lor they create no morbid state oi the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge 4t to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are iudispensable lo him who is parched with level and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.

MelHiiuUiology.

A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The liistorv of Helminthology abounds in illustrations ol the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and

states ot the animal economy, all tend

to render tliem an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to tlie study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them trom the human sytem. EiWAKD

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all liis skill in detecting the nature and form ol the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, coids, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affectionsof the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is, aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of JEdivard Wilders Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with tho useoi ^his truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation. He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance oi bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluab medicine at hand.

Indigestion,

'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is sallied in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder's Stomach Hitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality ol the disorder by a corresponding speciality ol cure. They should be kept every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health.

Gaii(liaima River-

The British army when it advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in oui own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we mslcle to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three grept actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting aul beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wilder's Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or,chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every e%se.

St. Louis Hospital, Paris.

This ancient institution is one ot the largest, and to the medical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adorn the gay capitol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands 6f sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is

set

apart lor patients suffering with diseases of the skin, and every patient, old or yonngTis taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some iorm. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge of the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety oi cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic or scrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash,rose-ash, pimples, scrofuia, ulcers, old sores, falling of the hair, etc. In all they did good, in IDost they effected a cure. But it, has remained for Edward Wilder's Sarsaparilia and Totash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared by no other combination of these substances. It is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the disease at which it is aimed it is simply resistless it never fails. See to it that you suffer not one day longer with any of the ills which it cures. Getitatonce.
