TECUMSEH.
A Historical Sketch of Fort Wayne—How Tecumseh Conducted Himself in Battle.
Where Fort Wayne now stands was once, as all know, the scene of many important battles between the Indians and whites. Among the former there was no more distinguished chief than Tecumseh, whose deeds of bravery and lion-hearted courage gave him his wide fame. There is a tradition that Tecumseh was born in the old Miami village, (Ke-ki-on-ga,) and as it is known that it #as his headquarters for many years, and in several bloody campaigns, the following letter from the venerable Goneral Combs, of Kentucky, to the American Historical Record will be perused with much interest by every citizen of Fort Wayne:
Editor Historical Record:—You ask me for a description of the celebrated Indian warrior, Tecumseh, from my personal observation. I answer that 1 never saw the grpat Chief but once, and then under rather exciting circumstances, but I have a vivid recollection of his appearance, and from intercourse with his personal friends, I am possessed of accurate knowledge of his character.
I wasjjas you know, one of the prisoners taken at what is known as Dudley's defeat on the banks of the Maumee river, opposite Fort Meigs, early in May, 1818. Tecumseh had fallen upon our rear, and and we were compelled to surrender. We were marched down to the old Fort Miami or Maumee, in squads, where a terrible scene awaited us.
The Indians, fully armed with guns, war clubs and tomahawks—to say nothing of scalping knives, had formed themselves in two lines in front of the gateway, between which all of us were bound to pass. Many were killed or wounded in running the gauntlet. Shortly after the prisoners had entered,, the Indians rushed over the fallen fort walls and again surrounded us, making unmistakable demonstrations of violence. We all expected to be massacred, and the small British guard around u« were utterly unable to afford protection. They called loudly for Gen. Proctor and Col. Elliot to come to our. relief. At this critical moment Tecumsch came rushing in, deeply excited, and denounced the murderers of prisoners as cowards. Thus our lives were spared and we were sent down to the fleet, at the mouth of Swan Creek, (now Toledo) and from that place across the end of the lake to Huron and paroled.
I shall never forget the noble countenance, gallant bearing and sonorous voice of that remarkable man, while addressing his warriors in our behalf.
He was then between 40 and 45 years of age. His frame was vigorous and robust, but he was not fat, weighing about 170 pounds. Five feet ten inches was his height. He had a high projecting forehead, and broad, open countenance aud there was something noble and commanding in all his actions. He was brave, humane and generous, aud never allowed a prisoner to be massacred if he could prevent it. At Ft. Miami he saved the lives of all of us who survived the running of the gauntlet. He afterwards released seven Shawnoese belonging to my command, and sent them home on parole. Tecumseh was a Shawnoese. His name signified in their language, The Shooting Star. At the time when I saw him he had the commission of a Brigadier General in the British Army. I am satisfied that he deserved all that was said of him by General Cass and Governor Harrison, previous to his death.
LESLIE COMBS.
LEXINGTON, KY., Oct 1871.
From tho Nevada Territorial Enterprise.
A Good Story of a Silver City Bridegroom. A young couple residing not far from Silver City, Nevada, determined to elope recently, and accordingly provided a buggy aud started for Virginia late in the afternoon, and in due time arrived at a certain hotel in that city, which is indeed the paradise of lovers. The two were exceedingly rural, and their conduct soon convinced the initiated attendants at the hotel that they had been thwarted in their hymenial inclinations by hard-hearted parents and guardians, opposed to what is satirically termed the "decree of Heaven."
The emotions betrayed by tho fugitives were various while modest in the extreme, they were unable to conceal their fondness from the" guests in the drawing-room, yet mingled with this modesty was a sort of look of triumph at their success, and fear lest they might be overtaken, which at once enlisted the sympathies of all who observed them.
At length the youug man went to. the office aud inquired for the proprietor, alleging that he had some private business which could be transacted with no other parties. JThe clerk stated that he was not in, but that he could and would attend to anything the rural might unfold. Of this the young man seemed skeptical and recommenced pacing the floor exhibiting the greatest restlessness and finally entered the drawing-room, from which he again issued after a short consultation, and approchiug the clerk, said: "Sir, there's a young lady in the room she wants to marry me and I want to marry her Just as bad, can you do anything for us?"
The clerk replied that anything matrimonial should be arranged in a short time, aud in less than half an hour the justice of the peace had arrived, the ceremony was performed, and the happy couple uuited by the firmest tie the law recognizee.
Soon after the bridegroom approached the desk of the clerk and commenced looking over the register. The clerk inquired what he desired, and received for reply that he only wished to see the arrivals. His manner betrayed tho fact that his mind was not easy but "What his troubles were no one could oonj€oture.
After walking around the office for about twenty minutes, he repaired to the book again, and said to the clerk in a low voice: "Hadn't you better change the register aud give us one room, now we're married "That is already changed," replied the clerk. "You are marked for the same

SHOOTING THE WRONG HENS.—A person in a passion very often jump.3 at conclusions suddenly. "I say, neighbor Snobs, if you don keep your hens out of my garden, I will shoot them." "Very well, Doolittle, shoot away only if you kill any of my hens throw them into my yard." (.'rack went the fowliug-piece, morning after morning, and large fat hens were pitched into neighbor Snobs' yard. They cooked well. After a fortnight or so, Doolittle discovered that Snobs never had any hens, and he had been shooting his own, they having broken out of his own coop.

Purgatives in some sha e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration has been to get one which lias either laxa
tive
or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always eflicient-and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This
ha= at
last been done. EDWARD V/ILDEB'S FAMILY VILLS fulfill all the requirements of the case"
They
area laxative, yet sure purgative,
vet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want" in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity givdu, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and aie indispensable to him who is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.
Helmintliology.
A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven tomadessbyan almost invisiblo member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helmintliology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytem. EDWARD WILDER'S MOTHER'S WORM SYRUP is a true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live itspresense. Mothers!

Gaudianiia Riyer-
The British army wlien It advancea on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands A.11 Europe believed that the invading' army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three grept actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The txio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wilder's ChiU Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case.

apart lor patients suffering with diseases oi the skin, and every patient, old or young, is taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had tharge ol the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic orscrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash, roseash, pimples, scrofuia, ulcers, old sores, falling of the hair, etc. In all they did good, in ost they effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward Wilder's Sarsaparilla and Potash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared by ro other combination of these substances. It is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the disease at which it is aimed it is simply resistless it never fails. Br. Laemiec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form oi the malady before bim, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the Value of t*e wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward, Wilder's Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation. He has no fear in the presence oi croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluab medicine at hand.
Indigcstion,
•Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is sillied in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of rtidigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its indi fidual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality 01 the disorder by a corresponding speciality oi cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health.
