WE are in receipt of Harper''s Bazar for January, through the courtesy of Dooley, the Opera House bookstore man. It is an excellent number, as usual, and all the ladies should get it.

DOC. STAIIL, who was arrested a short time since on a charge of larceny, took a change of venue to the "courts above" yesterday. Let the grave bury the young' man's faults with his last mortal remains.

THE examination of 'Charles Barton, charged with assault and battery on Engineer Mooney, was continued agaiu yesterday, because of the iuacesi-ibility of the injured man as a witness, he being in a very critical condition.

IT would seems that we had the lecture business on the brain to those who noted the fact in yesterday's GAZETTE that we referred in two items to the lecture at, Uie Opera House Friday" night. We meant dramatic and humorous reading. 5

THERE is a movement on foot in railroad circles of this part of the western world, to have conductors and brakesmen, wear a uniform, as is the custom on the-Qreat Western road of Canada, and some of the Eastern roads, in the U. S. This is a good movement, and we hope it will succeed

Toute's band furnished the music to which the programme was rendered in most satisfactory style to all present. The supper vras first-clas3, and of course was prepared by Breuning aud lady. The delicious viands were spread in the magnificent banquet hall adjacent to the main hall. All who attended will long remember with a thrill of pleasure the enjoyment of the evening.

The ludianapolis Journal, of this morning editorially compliments Rev. W. W. Curry,-of this city, and refers to him as being the most favorably mentioned Republican candidate for Secretary of State. The kinds words of the Journal will be heartily indorsed by all who know Mr. C.

Hon. H. K. Wilson, of Sullivan, is in the city attending Court. Mr. Charles Briggs, recently a bridegroom, 'is in the city the guest of his brother John C.

this morning, we learn that "yesterday morning a man was discovered by the engineer of a train on the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago Railroad, putting obstructions on the track in the way' of the train between Bain bridge and Carpentersville, Indiana. The man was captured. He was throwing his arms about, wildly acting and talking strangely. He is a German, but refused to give his name. He was sent to Greencastle, Iudiana, this morniug." Too much care cannot be exercised by engineers in "keeping an eye ahead," for evilly disposed persons and lunatics are ever at large.and at any time, through malice or the inspirations of the evil one, are liable to be guilty of such terrible deeds as obstructing a railroad track in front of an approaching train. The greatest care should also be exercised in communities to have those who are laboring under any sort of mental depression, carefully watched that they do not escape and bring destruction on not only their own heads but upon the lives of others. The above being a case in point, suggests these precautions.

Mr. and Mrs. John G. Shryer returned from Carlinville, Illinois, last evening. They were called away some days since to that city to the death-bed of Mr. Siiryer's sister-in-law, Mrs. D. A. Burke, who had been very sick for many months, and who died Wednesday, Dae, 27th. Mr. and Mrs. S. attended the last solemn rites to their loved and departed relative on Sunday, the last day of the old year.

Hon. John Pettit, of the Supreme Court, is still in the city, stopping at the Terre Haute House.

Joseph Gilbert, Esq., and Mr. John Weir, are attending the meeting of the State Horticultural Society at Indianapolis in an official capacity this week.

formation of the limb of the law who stopped the political editor of this paper on the street yesterday, and demanded if we are responsible for what appears in the city department of the Evening GAZETTE, we have to say in addition to being answered in the affirmative by the Chief, that we "can be found." W« will further state that we are responsible for all that has appeared in the city, general news and editorial columns of the GAZETTE, with the exception of an article on the T. H. & S. W. R. R., since a week ago yesterday, up to and including this number. Now, if the distinguished ornament to the Terre Haute bar feels himself so very deeply aggrieved at the certain paragraph to which he excepts, let him call and see us, with a cowhide or cane, as we understand he contemplates, and if he don't go away with a "bug in his ear,"-we don't know ourself. We make, this statement because the threats were publicly made, judging from the uumberof persons who have spoken to us about it.

A RISING YOUNG JOURNALIST CONSUMED!—The Indianapolis Journal is our authority for stating that the "rising young journalist of the Evening tfews, of that city, was "consumed with anxiety y.e^terday." We are pained to learn this, for that gentleman enjoyed the contideuce of the proprietors, his associates and the miany thousand readeis of the News, who will be deeply grieved to learn of his being consumed!
