A THRIVING CITY.

The City of Terre Haute—ItsCommercial Relatious, Manufacturing Industry, Educational Institutions, Etc.—The

Improvement of the Wabash. lo the hditor of the Tribune: Sir: The city of Terre Haute derives its name from the high ground on which it ia founded. The French voyageurs who gathered at Vincennes as far back as 1705, wandered up the Wabash and applied this name to an Indian village which was three miles south of tho present town. The site is a beautiful one, being on a plateau about GO feet above the river, and sloping in every direction so as to admit of easy drainage, and the river may be made available to supply the inhabitants with an abundance of good water.

The town was organized in 1816, and the fact of ita situation on the line of the Great National Road, a stupendous scheme in its day, and of which Henry Clay was the jjrojector, gave to this place a prospective importance. What, however, Jed to its substantial growth was the completion, in 1852, of the Terre Haute & .Indianapolis Railroad, and the subsequent extension of that road to St. Louis, thus fixing Terre Haute as an important jotnt on one of the great thoroughfares of traffic between the seaboard and the Mississippi Valley, and at the same time rendering tributary for manufacturing purposes the block coal region of Brazil, lying 10 miles to the east. Up to that time her population, after the lapse of more than 35 years, barely reached 4,000. In 1860 it had risen to 8,594 at the present time it is not far from 20,000, and is rapidly increasing. Since the completion of the Terre Haute & Indianapolis Railroad there have been put in operation the following routes which bear directly on the commerce if this city The St. Louis, Vandalia & Terre Haute the St. Louis & Indianpolis, essentially a rival line running to the same principal points the Evansville & Crawfordsville, and the Terre Haute & Chicago. Ground has just been broken on the Cincinnati & Terre Haute Railroad, to the stock of which the city has voted a subscription of $100,000, thus evincing her disposition to open new avenues of trade.

By these routes Terre Haute has direct access to the Lakes, to the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, and to the seaboard. She is distant from Chicago 180 miles St. Louis 165 miles from Cincinnati 180 miles, and from Louisville 150 miles—the last two distances being computed by the Cincinnati & Terre Haute route. Thus, then, it will be seen that there is room here for the growth of another inland city, and I know of no place which has a stronger claims to assume such position tlian Terre Haute. It is surrounded by a country fertile almost beyond comparison, and much of it is clothed with a magnifleent forest growth. The Wabash Valley has long been as furnishing the best corn lands in the United States, and the uplands produce good winter wl) jat. The forests yield abundant materials for railroad lies, wheels, hubs, barrels, and lumber for agricultural implements, and the coal fields are near at hand. Tho uuion between the spepular iron ores of Missouri and Lake Superior and the block coals of Indiana, can be effected here as cheaply as at any other point, and the Wabash river affords an" unfailing supply of water for furnaces and manufacturing purposes. An iron furnace, under the superintendence of Mr. A. L. Crawford, with a daily capacity of turning out 25 tuns of pig m'etal, is already in successful operation. There is a rolling mill, with a nail factory attached, with a capacity to manufacture 1,800 ltega of nails a week, and also a glass factory.

Main street is substantially built for the most part of brick, but the (ronts of many buildings are of Ellettsville limestone, a free-cutting stoue of an agreeable tint and great durability, and capable of any degree of ornamentation. It is, in fact, one of the niost desirable stones for construction to be found in the United States. Many of the private residences, with their surroundings of walks and shrubbery, indicate a spirit of taste and refinement on the part of their owners. The State Normal School is situated here, and the building, of brick with stone trimmings, in the midst of a square, presents an interesting appearance. The Opera House and Dowliug, both tastefully built aud adorned, afford commodious quarters for popular amusements. The public school buildings are also worthy of commendation, and evince that tlie people are not neglectful of the interests of education. To the member of the American Association for the Advancement oi Science, on the occasion of their visit to this place last Autumn, the citizens extended a magnificent reception.

With regard to the importance of the Wabash river as a great artery of tnftie, I am not profoundly impressed. This stream, like the Ohio, each year, as its sources are cleared up and,, its swamps drained, appears to flow with diminished volume. A survey with reference to the improvement of its navigation has just been completed uuder the direction of the United States' Topographical Bureau, and the plan contemplated is to remove the snags and sawygfs, ttnd excavate channels through the sand bars. Tins plan, while it might remove niany impediments, would not increase, but rather diminish, the average- depth of water by permitting it to flow more freely, and wheu completed would only admit of the free navigation of the river for a limited portion of the year by steamers of :li capacity, To slack-water the river would be impractioable, for the intervals bordering the stream' ftretwoad and larger tracts of rich land now cultivated, "would inundated and rendered valueless. The only feasible method to render the Wabash thoroughly -navigable, is to imitate what is now doing iu the neighboring State of Illinois to start at the head of Lake Michigan, say at Michigan City, and cut'a canal, at least 100 feet broad on the bottom, to the northernmost bend of the Wabash/ apd use a portion of the waters of that great reservoir to keep the river iu & boatable condition, except wheu closed by ice. There it a growing disposition on" the part of the people to restrain Congress from embarking in schemes of internal improvement designed to beueflt. partic-, ular sections btlt the State of. Indiana, I believe, is nearly out of debt, and may be disposed to execute a project which shall redound so mucli to her prosperity,

la taeaus a wa.te? egtumuhieaUoti eiiMbfef tliiiii aftjf iiiiiti ccnVeyaticej might be maintained throughout the en» tire length of the State, a distance of more than 250 miles in auair line thus uniting the commerce of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers \vith tnatof the gfeat lakes. S. W. Fostek.

upon the pit of the stomaeh of a child, Will cause the bowel? to be emptied, and ailoes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if tha medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said tho great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of crotou oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some slia- e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system arc benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild

but always

efficient-and the use of which did

not make it necessary to continue its use. This hasat last been done. Edwaiid Winder'sFamily Pills fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want iu large doses, they fulfill the lattei but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who sulleis from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.

Helmintliology.

p. distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale-is often driven tomadessbyan almost invisiblo member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helmintliology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytem. Edwabd

Wilder's Mother's Wokm Syktjp is a true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live in its preseuse. Mothers! destroy the worms which infest your little ones, with this deiigbtfu syrup.

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form ol the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The young est physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he know£ the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the com bination of Edward Wilder-a Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation. He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bron chitis he grapples wtth consumption, and sub dues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluab medicine at hand.

Indigestion,

Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying td* each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder'a Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They area combination of substances which meet the speciality ol the disorder by a corresponding speciality ol cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health.

Gaudianna River-

The British army when It advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands A.11 Europe believed that the intading army was extirpated./1 Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three gref actors in this equationrf disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition.. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wilder'* Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease andof miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case.

St. Louis Hospital, Paris.

This ancient Instiitution is one ot the largest, and to the medical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adorn the gay capitol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set apart tor patients suffering with diseases of the skin, and every patient, old or young, is taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who'had charge of the skin department as well-specific iti almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic or scrofulous or simple origin. They werejtiven in tetter, ringworxn, nettle-asli, roseasli, pimples, scrofula, ulcers, old sores, falling of th6 bair,et*£ In all they Bd \cost they effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward Wilder's SarsapariUa and Totash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared by no other combination of these~ substances. It is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the disease at which it is aimed it is simply resistless it never fails. See to it that you suffer not one day longer with any of the ills which it cares. Get it at once.
