WOOL EMBROIDERY.
The fancy for wool embroidery shows itself in the chairs, sofa cushions, footsi oils, lounges, tables, piano covers and rugs, which adorn so many homes. As a great deal of this work is done by the young ladies of the family, we have endeavored, in our observations of the different kinds of embroidery, to .single out some particular style, which would be effective enough to give satisfaction, while demanding but little time and expense. The einbroideiy, which is done upon BLACK CANVAS DOTTED WITH GOLD OR
SILVER,
has rewarded
ih
NO BACKGROUNDS TO WORK,
it requires, when composed of other styles, but little worsted, while it takes but a week, giving two or three hours a day, to embroider an elaborate patten. The cost will be from three to five dollars. Dark olors, particularly among the olive browns, should be chosen. White, pale blue or yellow, or the pale magenta colors, do not harmonize with the background the latter is prettier dotted with silver than with gold.
EMBROIDERED STRIPES
are in favor for ornamenting the backs of odd chairs. If three are worked, which is generally the case, the center will show a different pattern—sometimes the monogram of the owner, while the two outride stripes may be alike, or they may be different. In the prettiest back we have seen, every stripe showed a different vine. Pieces for the teats are also worked for these chairs.
WALL POCKETS,
Although they are sometimes made of black walnut rosewood, with embroidery extending over the front, may be of pasteboard the inside lined with silk, and the outside covered with embroidery. Superb pieees for armchairs are embroidered upon cloth. To do this, the canvas i.-t first tacked to the cloth, and, after the embroidery Is finished, the threads are drawn out. Care must be taken to let every stitch go through the cloth.
BRACKETS FOR VASES,
and various other ornaments, are also adorned with this gay work. Work baskets and piper baskets are ornamented in the same manner—in fact, it would be impossible to enumerate the articles which, in some way or manner, exhibit the prevailing fancy.
From Harper's Bazaar.
STREET SUITS.
As the season advances, the new winter costumes appear on the streets, the preference for black makes itself more visible. Ten of every dozen well-dress-ed ladies promenading the avenue are arrayed in black and the same is true of the audinees at fashionable theater.1: concerts, churches, and, indeed, everywhere that ladies do most congregate except at the opera.
GLISTENING JET,
fine laces, jewelry, feathers, and the lavender gray gloves relieve this favorite attire from any appearance or sombreness. One elegant suit, a polonaisa and single skirt is one of alternate stripes (an inch wide) of black velvet toque, solitaire diamonds ear-rings, and long lavender kid gloves were worn with this suit. Some of the richest

of the season, made by a modiste jtlst returned from abroad, have the lower skirt .escaping the ground, and trimmed to the fcuee in the following manner: On the •edge of the skirt are three overlapping folds au inch wide, and falling over these are four bias frills, each a finger deep, two of them in scanty gathers, the inter mediate ones laid in small pleats. The upper skirt, with apron froul and three Straight back widths most bouffantly draped, is edged with three bias folds of velvet and a broad tassel fringe with netted bead heading.

loop the sides. The basque has a double
position, a pointed front, a vest outlined by velvet f»ldj, aud duchess sleeves. A velvet Wattean inantJe is the wrap. It should be remarked here that the lingerie worn with the richest black suits in the daytime in plain linen, or perhaps embroidered linen, or else standing nm-ilin friita in tne Marie Antoinette fashion. Ltces detract from the elegant simplicity of these costumes, and are reserved for home and evening toilettes.
BALL DKKSSES.
Whito tulle dresses are the favo Ve bVl artire 'his season. The^e thin fabrics have regular train skirt and tunic. The lower skirt is from sixty-live to seventylive inches long behind, and about live yard* wide. The toundation of this skirt is white taffeta silk, and the tulle garniture covers it completely.
A Bridal Dinner.
A dinner party given by a wealthy citizen of New York to a bride and her bridesmaids, is thus described. The table seated sixteen served on each side with the lady and gentlemen of the house at head and foot. The tabieclo* \v:is of rich, heavy white silk, with fringe half a yard deep, aud was elegantly embossed. Along the edges of the table, under the plates of the guests, were spread lengths of the finest aud costliest linen damask, the width of a napkin. There were no meats or vegetables ou the board. It was set aud oruameuted for dessert. At each place was a small silver vase, of exquisite pattern, holding a few rare flowers. These, with kni and fork, the live wine-glasses of diflsrent sizes and patterns, and the bill of fare, printed in gold on white satin, were all. In the center of the table «as a richly chased plated tank filled with moss aud flowers. Runuing up from this was a stem which was twined with vjues and held astaud little lesslu size than the tAQfe, which was perforate)
On this stand stood a block of the clearest ice, which, sparkled and looked rain-bow-hued in the numerous gaslights, and as it melted sent little streams of water trickling down among the plants, making a beautiful fountain. The fruits were in elegant stands, garnished with the most beautiful flowers. The whole table presented a very elegant appearance. -""There were live eours-'s, at the end of which the narrow tablecloths on the edge of the table were dextrously rolled up and taken off by the waiters, showing fresh ones beneath, and clean napkins were supplied to the guests.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if ths medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha^ e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are in. curable without them and all of the simple disorders of tliesystein are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in theimdministra tion has been to get one wliich has either laxa' tive or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This hasatlast been done. Edward Wildek's Fam

case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the flrbt want: in large closes, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is pa relied with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all ou who value health.
llclmiiitliology.
A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale'is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Iielminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states of the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytem. Ed
Wildkk's Mother's Wokh Syrup is a true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live in its presense. Mothers! destroj' the worms which infest your little ones, with this deiightfu syrup.
Dr. Laeimec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up (lie mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with ill his skill in detecting the nature and form ol Jie malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affect Ions of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The young est physician to-day knows better how to man age any one of these chest troubles he know the value of the wild cherry he is acquaints with its supreme virtues he is aware of th many potent agents which enter into the coin bination of Edward Wilder's Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with tiie u:
Indigestion,
'Which makes sleep a paiD, and turns its balm to worm wood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about No disease pi ei-t-uts such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, aud can only be read by him vhoi ail-Jed in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has beeii said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each Individ ual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscien tious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Ed ward Wilder's Stomach Sitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combina tion of substances which meet the speciality ol the disorder by a corresponding speciality ol cure. They should be kept in every well-regu lated family they are indispensable to health.
Gfaudianna River*
The British army when it advanced on Tala vara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the slckaning Influence of miasm. The three grept actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious eflects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare With Edward Wilder's Chill Tbnic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a curc is guaranteed iD every ease.
