Have We a Diamond Field at Onr Doors? Since the days of tUe exploration and conquest of the southern portion of the American continent by Hernando, Cortez and his Ivurd-hit ting, pious and plunder-loving-followers, the belief that Arizona-—in \yhieh there were then situated, as vvy now know, the famous "Kiugdonvof Cibbla," for which Cor onodo antT DeSoto sought so long from opposite/directions—abounded is the precious rfietals and precious stones has been eurreut. So far as the precious metal.y are concerned, recent explorations ajrd mining operations have abundntly demonstrated the truth of the old traditions, and it is not impossible—we might, perhaps, say not improbable—that the deposits of precious stones, which the Aztecs worked centuries ago, are soon to be found. It is known that the Aztecs occupied Arizona in early days, and that they assured Cortez and his followers that the precious stones—of which they had a considerable store-came from the far north, beyond the limits of of the empire of Montezuma as the Spaniards found it. The ruins of those cities are scattered through Central Arizona, and are outside of the greater ruins running in a semi-circle from the vicinity of Wickenburg, on the Haissiyampi, far to the northward into the country of the Colorado Chiquito, around the Black Forest and San Francisco mountain, and south-west-ward to the Gila. East of the mouth of the Salinas is found a range of minor ruins on the hill tops near running water supposed at first to have been temples of the sun, but now admitted to have been intrenched mining camps, located in an enemy's country, or in a country subject to raids from a hostile people—probably the ancestors of the saintly and lamb-like Apache pets of Vincent Collyer of the present day. In the vicinity of many of these camps slag and other evidences of wonting for silver and gold are found, but in others no traces of the precious metal are found, and the inference that the occupants must have been seeking for something else is quite natural. One of these ruins is located on a bed of lava, which flowed for a hundred miles to the soatheast from the now silent crater of Mount San Francisco, and is twenty miles from water. The builders of that camp were evidently cutting through the lava aud mining for something underneath it. Years ago Kit Carson's men, in passing through the Navajo country in New Mexico, aud the eastern portion of the never fully explored country of the Moqitis, found on a gravelly plain large quantities of small red stones in the earth, carried out by the red ants of the country, and carried some of them away with them. Years after, Fred Henry, a well-known Arizonian Indian-fighter and miner, gave a number of these stones to a gentleman from this city, who had one of them ground by a lapidary, and it proved to be a genuine ruby, though not very valuable, on account of its dark Color.

The whole country in the region of the mine is in a high state of excitement, and arrangements are making to sink other shafts with a view to striking the quartz stratem. It may extend over a territory, and yet it is possible it is confined to the tract Mr. S. has leased. Be this as it may, the excitement is great and land in the vicinity is held at almost fabulous prices.

Mr. Schweitzer intends starting to "VVushiagton Gity in a few daysJto perfect his arrangements for working the--mine, disposing of the metal, etc. He also intends to erect a house over the main entrance to the mine, the better to guard agiuust iutrusion and pilfering. He informs us that he has refused $50,000 for an eighth interest iu the mine, believing that he can superintend aud carry it on himself. He has just learned that tons and tons of clay removed from the cavcrn is worth five dollars per barrel, and he is goiug lo make provision for savins

Mr. Schweitzer has heretofore given notice warniug pfeisons not to visit the mine without a permit. He now gives notice that he will prosucute those who fail to heed the above request.

Mr. S. engaged in the matter with the fixed determination of prosecuting his investigations to a point that would forever settle the existence of the virgin metal in this county, and though he met with many discouraging remarks from men less determined and enterprising, he persevered in his labors until crowned with success. The last powerful blast let off, after the smoke had cleared away, revealed to his delight aud astonished vision a scene that fairly bewildered him with its brilliancy—a five foot stratum of quartz rock, rich in silver and lead ore, lay glittering before him. The goal now reached, those engaged in making the discovery were at once ordered to cease work until arrangements were made for taking care of the ore. Some of the quartz was taken to an old miner, who crushed it and separated the metals in the usual way, when it was found to be very rich in silver aud lead. The old Indian traditiou, "that when this mine should be discovered the people of this part of the country no longer need to shoe their horses with iron", bids lair to receive verification.
