Legal Qualifications.
The followiug racy examination of candidates for admission to the bar is taken from the Western Law Journal, and is decidedly a good hit:
The examination commenced with, "Do you smoke, sir?" "I do sir." "Have you a spare cigar?" "Yes, sir." "Now sir, what is the first duty of a lawyer?" "To collect fees." "Right. What is the second?" "To increase the number of his clients?" "NVhen does the position towards your clients change?" "When making out a bill of costs." "Explain." "We then copy tho antagonistic position—I assume the plaintiff and he becomes defendant." "A suit decided, how do you stand with the lawyer conducting the other bill?" "Cheek by jowl." "Enough you promise to become an ornament to your profession, and I wish you success. Now are aware of the duty you owe me?" "Perfectly." "Describe it." "It is to ask you to drink." "But suppose I decline?" "Candidate, (scratching his head), "there is no iustance of the kind on record in the book. I cannot answer the question." "You are right, and the confidence with which you make the assertion shows th»! you have read law attentively. Let's tuk* drink, and I will sigu your certificate."
THE Phihuh'lphinns are all on the qui vive, in auticip ttion of the visit of the Grand Duke Alrxis to that burgh, where he is to be greeted with a grand reception and a ball. Iu anticipation of the event the Bulctin publishes a column of •'Czarcastic observations." Here area few of them:
Ladies in full dress will go to the ball to ttie Russian bare-necked. No side-arms will be woru at the ball, unless they have been sucee&af lly vaccinated.

From the Denver (Col.) News.
A Boston Thief—How he Squandered his Money in the West. The Associated Press report yesterday announce that the young man Heine, who recently robbed a Massachusetts bank of $2-5,000, had been arrested in San Fracisco, and added that nearly all the money was found on his person. As we have referred casually to the young man on one or two occasions, while he was stopping in Denver, we take this oppor tunity to inform our readers that he is the party who so lavishly disposed of and unwisely displayed his money, and for whom a party of Denver thieves put up a little game one night.
He was young, apparantly unsophisti cated, ready to make friends with strangers, and extremely anxious that they should become acquainted with the fact that he had plenty of money and stood in no danger of being "broke." From Kansas City to Denver, he traveled in company with three young men, all perfect strangers to him, and took upon himself the payment of their bills. He changed his name three times between the above naaied points, and when he got there, he had lixed upon Mr. Archer as the best cognomen by which to pass himself off. While here, he lived likea "lighting cock," enjoying hischampagne suppers, scattering his money far and wide, lavishing costly presents on females, and paying the bills of a retinue of male companions. Inviting new made friends to his room, he would take from his trunk a package of greenbacks, which he said contained about $23,000, and assure his guy-its that he hid plenty of funds. He was continually inquiring for a good business location, and announcing a dozen times a day that he had $23,000 to invest.
Meantime there were detectives on his truck, "shadowing" him night and day, but he in his eighteen-year-old innocence had no idea that such was the case, and went on with the extravagant actions, which were sure to get him into th® ollicer's hands. Spending about $1,000 in Denver, this Mr. Archer pulled up stakes and turned his face Pacific-ward. About as soon as he arrived in San Francisco, his unfamiliar but constant traveling companion at once arrested him, and he is now probably on his way back to Boston, to see his Pa, and answer for his crimes.
One Hundred Years Ago.
One hundred and ten years ago there was not a single white men in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Then, what is the most flourishing part of America, was as little known as the country around the mysterious Mountains of the Moon. It was not until 1767 that Boon left his home in North Carolina to become the first settler in Kentucky. The first pioneer of Ohio did not settle until twenty years after this time. A hundred years ago Canada belonged to France, and the population did not exceed a million and a half of people. A hundred years ago the great Frederic of l'nissia was performing those grand exploits which have made him immortal in military annals, and with his little monarchy was sustaining a singlehanded contest with Russia, Austria and France, the three great powers of Europe combined. Washington was a modest Virginia Colonel, and the great events in the history of the two worlds in which these great but dissimilar men took leading parts were then scarcely foreshadowed. A hundred years ago the United States were the most loyal part of the British empire, and on the political horizon no speck indicated the struggle which within a score of years thereafter established the great republic of the world. A hundred years ago there were but four newspapers in America. Steam engines had not been imagined, and the railroads and telegraphs had not entered into the remotest conception of men. When we come to look back at it through the vista of history, we find that to the century just past has been allotted more important eveuts, in their bearing upon the happiness of the world, than almost any other which has elapsed since the creation.—San Francisco Bulletin.
Why can't the youthful Duke dance?
because he left his Russian steppes behind. As to the kind of dress most fitting for the ball, out of compliment to the Duke, of cossacks will be worn.
Gentleman are expected to take off their hats when they approach the presence of the Grand Duke and Rush-in bare.
As the Alexis ball is to be full dress, the committee had to persuade the obliging Mr. Pugh to tear his Schurz away from the Academy.
It is understood that Catacazy has instructed the Duke not to encore the address of welcome to Philadelphia, if it is more than four hours long.
AN exchange says that "an Irishman who was recently run over by a whole train of cars got up and asked for his cap, and said he 'would not run another such risk as that for tin dollars.'

upon the pit of the stomach of a child will cause the bowels to be emptied, and allocs kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr, Ciutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha. e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are in curable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in theii aQministra tion has been to get one which has either laxa
tive
or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always eilicient—aud the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This hasat last been done. EDWAKD WILDEB'S FAM IL.Y PILLS fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want: iu large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched with fevei and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.
Heliniiitliology.
A
distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helmintliology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytem. Ed WAKD WlLDEli'S MOTHER'S WOKSI SYKUF is a true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, itfc effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live in Its presense. Mothers', destroy the worms whieb infest your little ones, with this deiightfu syrup.
Dr. Laennec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form ol the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleui'isy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of JSdward Wilder-a Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation, He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluabl medicine at hand.
Indigestion,
Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precisc and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a com bin a tion of substances which meet the speciality ol the disorder by a corresponding speciality ol cure. They should be kept every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health.

The British army when it advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. Yet malaria diseases arff no more common in Europe than in out* own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickoning influence of miasm. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare With Edward Wilder's Chill Tonic, the master of ever form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. St. Louis Hospital, Paris.
This ancient institution is one ot thelargest. and to the medical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adorn the gay capitol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set apart lor patients suffering with diseases of the skin, and every patient, old or young, is taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge ol the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic orscrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash,rose-ash, pimples, scrofula, ulcers, old sores, falling of the hair, etc. In all they did good, in most they effected a cure. But it has remained for JSdward Wader's Sarsaparilla and Batash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared by no other combination of these substances. It
