"THE GRAND JOKE."
I!O*TT He Looks, How He Dresses and How He Dances—As Crocus Saw Him.
Other DiKtinsnlsiied Foreigners.
The following we clip from the Titus viile (Pa.) Herald, as an extract from a lengthy letter from the racy and imaginative special correspondent of that spicy organ, who writes under the nomde plume of "Crocus," who attended the grand ball given in honor of Grand Duke Alexis, at the Academy of Mugic, New York, recently, as descriptive of one the greatest society events in the great metropolis of the continent. It is rich, rare and racy. Alter describing the ar rival of the Prince, "Crocus" writes '1 IiOW LOVELY! HOW ELEGANT'' came from a hundred rosy lips on every side, and it was universally acknowledged tiiat his manner of entering the ball room was far superior to that of the Prince of Wales. Alexis was neatly, but not plainly attired in a bear skin "wamus," while underneath wasacrstly vest of coon-skin tanned with the hair out-ide, and ornamented on either breast with the striped tail of the same animal, which, hanging pendant, swung and bobbed with his every motion, and likewiseserved as a handle for his partner while waltzing. His trowsers were of the "Wehil" pattern, full breasted in the rear, of the most elegant material, and wero from a pieC3 of plush cloth which Pullman, tho palace ear mau, had left from trimming one of his coaches. He wore a pair of "J)e Wellington Boots," with soles an inch and three quarters thick, and ornamented with a bay window over each toe to give ease to his corns. His shirt was of the jockey pattern, and was ornamented with horse-shoes, while on the bosom were admirable portraits of "Dexter" and "Lady Thorne." This shirt was worn in compliment to Robert Bonner, whose paper the Duke takes regularly, and is much interested in the "answers to correspondents." His head was clipped in the customary Mace and Coburn style, and oiled with goose grease which difl'used a delicious and intoxicating odor of Congress water. His moustache, which was beeswaxed to the fierceness of a clerk's in the Erie Railroad office, gave a most "ravissante" appearance to his chin, which was shaven clean. A magnificent Alaska diamond completed his "tout ensemble," which was gay in the extreme. But it is his commanding figure that wins him the admiration of the fair sex. Standing with two feet in his boots, and six feet above them, making in all eight feet, he combine the Herculean beauty of O'Baldwin, the "Irish giant," with the gentleness of a last year's clam. And his symmetrical proportions, not unlike the Collosjusof Rhodes, added to a smiling demeanor like that of the "Heathen Chinee," serves to inspire all around him with a platonie afi'eclion that only needs cultivation to inspire the possessor with a desire to know of him, and borrow money of him if possible.
THE LADIES' TOILETTES.
It. would require the brain of an Alexander Stephens, and the product of a paper mill, to describe the rare, rich, and magnificent toilettes present. Diamonds were to be seen in countless numbers, from tho gorgeous soltaire of a Sixth Ward policeman, and the mammoth clutches of a buckwheat oil prince, down to the modest, and unassuming sparkler of Tweed or Fiskian style. Au eminent importer of hair stated that there were at least $500,000 worth of purchased capillary substance to be seen in the room, or enough to mix all the mortar used on the Court House, and give the desired con sistency to all the boarding bouse butter consumed during the past year.
Madame Catiserazy was attired in a lovely lamb and green peas silk, cut appvopos in the back, and goered in the bulllest manner around the bottom. Her hair was cut doecolctc, and her Bllppers were run down at the heel ala mode, de chambremaid.
Miss Petusit do Meningitis was the cvenosure of all eyes as she promenaded the floor leaning heavily upon tho cork Hipper of Count Hoopinkoll, a Russian naval ottieer, whose .ureast looked like the show-window of a tin shop, glittering as it was with temperance medals, •baggage checks, and the gorgeous pharnaphanalia of the proprietor of a dollar store. His fair companion's face was flushed with excitement and Laird's Bloom of Youth, and her eyes fairly Hashed with merriment and Belladonna, as she listened to the diptheria producing monosyllables of the Count.
Mr. Noekemoff, one of the Russlau Consulate, attracted much attention by his simple attire, consisting of Garden of Eden breeches, sarsaparilla-colored coat, and a heavenly tint of hair dye upon his whiskers. His head, wheih was as bald lis a roll of eouutry butter, had been grained and varnished in imitation of Russia leather, while his glass eye, disployed a stare that only conies from high birth, a familiarity with society, aud the skill of the glass-blower.
HOW HE HOOFED IT.
The first dance in which the Grand Duke manipulated his brogans was the "L:\ncers," Mrs. Governor Hoffman for a partner. As a tripper of the "light
fantastic" Alexis was uota success. On the "forward aud back" he did well enough, but when it came to "swiugiug on the comers" he was a little behind, and the "grand right and left" mixed him np so that he ripped out a horrid oath in Muscovy Dutch at least, he remarked something very emphatically, aud Gen. McDowell, who was his vis a vis, was distinctly heard to say "damisizesacrebleukrotchaulhemlock." But on the homestret. when the "countermarch" occurred, the Grand Duke was all right* though his height rendered it necessary for him to take two or three steps to the rear when he made the Lancer's salutatiou, otherwise he would have knocked the brains out of the opposite couple. But I can not specify further. The beauty of the decoration, the sumptuousness of the supper table, the beauty and eleganco of the appointments can be imagined. The Duke assures me he will visit the oil regions, as soon as the weather gets cooler. He will be the guest of the Commercial Club, and— wants to obtain portraits of the Common Council and City Auditor.

PKIXCK PIEKUE BONAPARTE'S recent uarrige with M'ile Riffin took place under interesting circumstances. The couple were married by the French Minister at the Legation in Brussels. 'The Independence Beige says that the mar riuge was but the consecration a union contracted years age before a civil officer of a small town in Belgian Luxemburg named Lacuisine. That union, from which had issued two children, has been disapproved by the ex-Emperor, who, by virtue of the laws of the Empire, declared the ceremony null and void. The Empire having fallen, the Prince de sired to legitimatize his children, and therefore the parties presented themselves before the French Minister, who, in reply to a question from the Prince, said that they were acting strictly according to law. The marriage contract
the parties were declared to be regularly married.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child will cause the bowels to be emptied, and allocs kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same eflect as if the medicinehad been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon Hie tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha. e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are in curable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administra tion bus been to get one which has either laxa tive or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This has at last been done.
EDWARD WILDEB'S FALT'
ILY PILLS fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want: in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched witn fevei and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.
Ilelmintliology.
A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven tomadessbyan almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease aud in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering kom.e substance which was capable of speediiy, safely and permanently expelling them Irom the human sytem. Dr. Lacnnec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form ol the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consump tion, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passag-es still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The young est physician to-day knows better how to man nge any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the com bination of Edward Wilders Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use 01 this truly great medicine he is fully master
Indigestion,
'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, wo all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is liled in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individ ual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscien tious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Ed ward Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combina tion of substances which meet the speciality ol the disorder by a corresponding speciality oi cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health.
Gaudianiia River-
The British army when it advancea on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of tho Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the im siding army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickaning influence of miasm. The three grept actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious eflects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wilder's Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try It, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case.
St. Louis Hospital, Paris.
This ancient institution is one ot the largest, and to the medical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adorn the gay capltol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set apart lor patients suffering with diseases of the skin, and every patient, old or young, is taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge of the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic orscrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash,rose-ash, pimples, scrofula, ulcers, old sores, falling of the hair, etc. In all they did good, In most they effected a cure. But it has remained for Edxcard Wilder's Sarsaparilla and Potash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared by no other combination of these substances. It is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the disease at which it is aimed it is simply resistless it never fails. See to it that you suffer not one day longer with any of the ills which it cures. Get It at once.
