It was known that he was quite wealthy in real estate, his wealth being the result of the advance in the value of his lands, which were judiciously purchased in localities where improvements were steadily going forward. Butat the time of his death not a very large sum of money was found among his effects nor had his family any knowledge that he had other funds than what his bank account and his pocket-book showed.

The administrator of the estate was proceeding by due course of law to settle its affairs, and this made an inventory of the contents of his late residence in Charlestown necessary. This inventory was being proceeded with on Thursday last when an old, but tolerably large, trunk was found stowed away in a closet under a pair of stairs 011 the "first floor of the house, and within the bed room occupied by the deceased during his lifetime. This old trunk was drawn from its dingy quarters, and was literally covered over with dust and cobwebs. Its great weight, however, attracted particuIar attention, and as no kejrcould be found with which to unlock it, the lock was broken.

And now comes the singular part of this story. On raising tflie lid of the trunk it was found that the body of the box was literally filled with gold and silver coin and Government bonds. A grandson of the deceased informs us that there were $2o,000 in gold and silver, and $10,000 in Government bonds. Mrs. Hammond, who survives her husband, says that during the raid of General Morgan through Indiana, Mr. Hammond drew all his money from the bank and other sources, and placed it together in this old trunk, which he secreted where it was found. She had supposed, however, that after the danger from Morgan and his men had passed, he had again deposited the money whence it had been drawn, and, although it was known to her that the trunk was in the closet, she never dreamed of the inline* treasure it contained.

The money was counted by the proper parties, and then carried to Jeftersonville, where it was deposited for safe keeping in the Citizens' National Bank. At the time of his death Rev. Dr. Hammond was probably the wealthiest Methodist minister in the West, except, perhaps, Bishop Ames. We are informed that his estate is estimated at not less than §350,000. It is not often that a minister of the gospel has so fortunate a run of luck in the accumulation of wealth. Mr. Hammond several times, a few days before his death, attempted to tell his family something that seemed to bear with weight upon his mind but he was too debilitated to either talk or write. Several times he was noticed to point anxiously toward the closet, and it is now thought his desire was to communicate to his family the place where his treasure was hidden.

From the Chicago Republican. Phil Sheridan's Pass.

The following poem was suggested to the author by the inhuman conduct of a Mississippi steamboat captain, who re fused to honor the pass issued by Phil Hheridan to a lady and family that were bereft of everything by the late fire "Hay, Cap there's a girl a cryln' below,!

A kind of a cityfled lass, With couple o' kids at her side in tow, And a bogus sort oi a pass.

"Hiie says she's corne from the city of flames That they al 1 the Queen of the West A"' she looks like one of yer high-born dames

Though she aint very grandly dressed.

"I halt believe she's a lady bred, An' tellin'the gospel truth Phil Hheridan signed the pass himself,

An' it's hard when ye think of her youth.

"I told her 1 thought vou'd take her through, Though it wa'n't in the regular way If you 11on'i, why I doesn't know what she'll do,

For she hasn't a dime to pay."

"G'» down below, with yer maudlin trash, And tell her to pack her stuff If stie wants to rlue she must pay the cash,

Or I'll put her ashore at the bluir.

"Phil Hheridan don't write a pass for me He did me a dirty trick, And if all the North wuz to drown atsea,

I wouldn't throw 'emastick.

"I'm glad to think that their time has come To taste of the scorching blaze, For I don't forget old Sherman's march

As a thing of bygone days.

"I'll honor no pass from a Yankee cuss, 'Cept it carries the holder to li—11 Ho put her ashore without further fuss,

When I give yea tap o' the bell!"

"Well, Cap'n, I know you're the boss afloat, An'italut forme to say, Hut take yer stamps from that twenty note,

An' let the poor woman stay.

"An' I hope when ye Jump on the Heaveneraft, An' the minister tickets ye through, That the boss of the boat, when he comes abaft,

Won't say Unit yer pass won't do." Aurora, III., 1S71. COI'1*ALKEN.

lie Dies and Leaves $35,000 Hidden in an Old Trunk. For startling sensations Clark county is tlie champion county of Indiana. We are scarce recovered from the .sensation of the Park family murder and the hanging of the negro murderers, when another extraordinary affair, of an entirely different character, however, startles us b.y its strangeness. Itev. Ilezin Hammond was a noted local preacher of the Methodist Church, and resided for many years at Charlestown, Indiana. He died some four weeks ago, after a lingering illness. During his life-time he had been a prudent, economical man, but by 110 means miserly in disposition, for he gave liberally to all commendable objects.

AN INFERNAL WELL.—Iu Sangamon county, near the village of Laomi, in sinking a weli recentty, the workmen came to a body of water. A most remarkable feature about this strange body of water is that though almost ice-cold, it is stirred by some hidden force, and boils and bubbles up to the height of several feet above the level when at rest and that this commotion of the water occurs at regular intervals—an hour of rest succeeded by an hour of bubbling, and so on alternating from calm to troubled waters.—St. Louis Republican

Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some share, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This hasat last been done. EDWAED VILDEB'S FAMILY

Helmiiitliology.

A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven tomadessbyan almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states of the animal ecouomy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling tiiem trom the human sytem. EDWARD WILDER'S MOTHER'S WOKSI SYKUP is a true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide "vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, it effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live in its presense. Mothers! destroy the worms which infest your little ones, with this deiightfu syrup.

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill iu detecting the nature and form oi the malady before him, he was sadly deficient his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affect ions of the air passages still he left but fewwords concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wiidcrs Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use

Indigestion,

Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency liicli regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is sillied in tho book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each Individ al case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscien tious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder1a Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a comblna tion of substances which meet the speciality ol the disorder by a corresponding speciality ol cure. They should be kept in every well-regu lated family they are indispensable to health.

Gaiidianna River*

The British army when it advanced on Tala' vara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. Thqy died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three grept actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare With Edward Wilder1s Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Tly it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case.

St. Louis Hospital, Paris.

This ancient instiitution is one ot thelargest, and to the medical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adorn the gay capitol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set apart tor patients suffering with diseases Of the skin, and every patient, old or young, is tnking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge of theskin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic orscrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash,rose-ash, pimples, scrofuia, ulcers, old sores, falling of the hair, etc. In all they did good, in most they effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward Wtlder's Sarsaparilla and Potash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any knows medicine. It possesses virtues shared by no other combination of these substances. It is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the disease at which it Is aimed it is simply resistless it never fails. See to it that you suffer not one day longer with any of the ills which it cures. Get it at once.

Men who came here two and three years ago, and took a farm, are to-day independent.

To Yotrso MEN.

This country is being crossed with numeron Railroads from every direction to Siout City Iowa. Six Railroads will be made to tnis city within one year. One is already In operation connecting us with Chicago and the U. P. Railroad and two more will be completed before spring, connecting us with Dubuque and McGregor, direct. Three more will be completed within a year, connecting us direct with St. Paul, Minn., Yankton, Dakota, and Columbus, Nebraska, on the U. P. Railroad. The Missouri River givesus the Mountain Trade. Thus it will be seen that no section of country offers such unprecedented advantages for business, speculation and making a fortune, for the country is being populated, and towns and cities are being built, and fortunes made almost beyond belief. Every man who takes a homestead now will have a railroad market at his own door, And any enterprising young man with a smalt capital can establish himself in a permanent paying business, if he selects the right location ana right branch of trade. Eighteen years residence in the western country, and a large portion of the time employed as a Mercantile Agent in this country, has made me familiar with all the branches of business and the best locations in this country.
