The coffin-like table moved uneasily backward and forward and sideways. It lifted itseflfrom the floor.

CICERO ON FREE LOVE.

At this time attention was directed from the antics of the coffin-shape table to a middle-aged woman, who weut into a trance and shouted at the top of her voice, "Whoo-tah lie-ho, wlioo-tah!" Jumping to her feet with the quickness of a squirrel, she said the spirit of Cicero was speaking through her. Cicero was of the opinion that there was as much deviltry and meanness of all kinds in the world in ancient times as there is at the present day. There was King David, who claimed to be a man after God's own heart, and he wanted Uriah's wife. So he put Uriah in the front of the battle. Uriah was killed, and David took the widow. "Love," said Cicero, "will go where it is sent and no mistake. The King could not help liking a pretty Voman." The spirit of Cicero discoursed at length on free love. After the audience has grown somewhat weary, the medium ceased speaking,* gazed wildly at the ceiling, gasped convulsively, rubbed her eyes hard with her fiugers, and dropped into her chair.

JONAHS DISCOVERED.

The next speaker was the venerable gentleman at the head of the table, who said lie was not influenced by spirits, but spoke on his own hook. He was a freelover in the broadest sense of the term, for he loved every man, woman and child iu the world. "But," he concluded, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, "it is quite natural that I should love woman the most." At this remark there was a nenernl titter around the room, and some laughed outright.

A tall, gaunt man, with long hair and piercing coal black eyes stood up and solemnly said: "There is a brighter destiny. For a small fee I will give instructions pertaining to the higher and better life, insuring a brighter destiny. I keep a school of the higher and better life." No one offering to invest, the speaker subsided.

Two elderly ladies were observed holding a whispered consultation. One of them rose excitedly and rushed to the other end of the hall. She said: "I know there are Jonahs among us yes, Jonahs in the shape of uewspaper reporters, who are ready to pounce upon us like vultures and hold us up to ridioule but they are welcome here. "We want the truth proclaimed to the world." The lady became so excited about it that it was necessary to lead her to a seat and request her to stop talking.

TWILIGHT SCENES.

The seanee continued until the sun went down and the shades of twilight deepened. The dim light, as it struggled through the blue window curtains, cast a bluish tinge upon the faces of the men and women in the circle.

The room grew darker, and darker, until the worshippers and the coffinshaped table were scarcely visible. The gas was not lighted, for the spirits were of that or.ler which seemed to prefer darkness light. In the darkness the reporter co-aid dimly see men and women lovingly clasping each other's hands. In a few instances strong arms clasped feminine waists. Male and female faces were laid lovingly against each other, and the sound of kissing was distinctly heard. A female Voice struck up, aud the whole assembly joined in singing: s.

THE COFFIN-SHAPED TABLE.

Tho Progress of Spiritualism in the Metropolis—Strange Seance in an Eighth Avenue Hall—A Spiritaal Scene in the

Dai k—Free-Lore and Progression—A Jonah Journeying to the Snmmer Land At half-past 3 o'clock yesterday after noon a 6'un reporter was passing the southeast corner of Eighth avenue and Sixteenth street, when he heard music in the air. The flood of melody gushed out of a door which opened into a dark en try-way, leading to a narrow, rickety staircase. A hundred voices were singing:

I never look up with a wish to the *kles, But a lltriit like thy presence is there, And I hear a low murmur like thine in reply

When I pour out my spirit in reply.

Instinctively the reporter looked up at the fourth story of the building. The windows were each shaded with a blue curtain, upon which inscribed in guilt letters, "Mohawk Hall." The following notice was posted in the entrance-way "Friendly Spiritual Circles, Sunday afternoon, at o'clock, in Mohawk Hall: All are invited."

Climbing the dismal staircase, were scores of people who were responding to the invitation. In the hall was a scene such as is seldom witnessed in the most high-strung spiritualises meetings. In the center of the room was a table. The top of this table was in the shape of.a coffin. Over it was thrown a black cloth, giving it a very dismal and funeral appearance. Sitting around in this circle, with their hands resting upon this coffinshaped table, were eighteen men and women. The ends and sides of the room were occupied with seats tilled with people, all of whom seemed to take the deepest interest in the proceedings. Many of the spectators were no doubt attracted there by curiosity, but far the larger number were evidently firm believers in spiritual philosophy. THE DANCE OF THE COFFIN-SHAPED

TABLE.

As the singing ceased, all eyes were bent upon the circle seated around the coffin-shaped table. At the head of the coffin sat a venerable-looking patriarch. His head was almost entirely bald, and the few hairs which remained were as white as the driven snow. He wore a long flowing white beard. At his right was an elderly lady, and at his left a buxom young woman. The elderly lady was whispering lovingly to the old gentleman, but he was paying no attention to her. He was busily whispering in the ear of the young lady. The young lady heeded not the elderly gent, but smiled sweetly upon a mild-looking young gentleman who sat at her left. For a few minutes nothing further of note occurred. Then the eighteen ladies and gentlemen in the circle lovingly clasped each other's hands, forming a magnetic circuit.

Heliiiiiitliology.

A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every I situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible •member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of

Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms In the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with I their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states of the animal economy, ail tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds«have been devoted to the'study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them lrom the human sytem.

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who erer lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form oi the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The young est physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the com bination of Edward Wilders Compound Extract qf Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation. He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bron cliitis he grapples wtth consumption, and sub dues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluabl medicine at hand.

Indigestion*

'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in thebook of nature. It is self evident tha the difl'erent forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has beeia said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each indiVid ual case its precise and as It were, its individual cure. This is the object- which every conscien tious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Ed• ward Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combina tion of substances which meet the speciality oi the disorder by a corresponding speciality oi cure. They should be kept every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health.

Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three greet actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition.
