In too many of these poems there is mere coarseness without humor, or depth of feeling, or any poetic thought. Vulgar words areadopte 1 merely to secure a des'red rhyme. Thus the second stanza of "A Newport Romance" is as follows "Her lover was fickle, and fine, and French

More than once the word "stick" is made to rhyme with"creek." This may be what is called an excusable rhyme, but it certainly is not a good one, for it involves an incorrect pronunciation of the word "creek," only in vogue among uueducated or rustic people. Then, agaiu, it Is no reason because Whittier made a false rhyme to "been" in "Maud Muller," for other writers to follow the bad example yet Bret Hartes does it Worst of all, in "The Second Review of the Graud Army" he tells us that— "outol tbe misty midnight air I heard In the distance a

SOME NEW BOOKS.

Bret Harte's New Volume of Poems. If Mr. Bret Harte had never written anything better than the verses contained in his new book entitled East and West Poems (James R. Osgood & Co.,) his reputation would not be as high as it is. We begin to fear that the story of his career as a poet will be Jike that of the new clock which began by striking twelve and rau down before it ever rrached twelve again. It may seem ungracious to assert that a young author's future work will not equal what he has done in the past yet this depends much upon the character of his past achievements. At no time in Mr. Bryant's career, since he wrote "Thanatopsis" at the age of nineteen, would it have been in the least derogatory to his fame to say that he would never write another poem of equal merit. And Bret Harte's admirers may find some satisfaction in entertaining a like view as regards the cl.'ver and widely-known "Plain Language from Truthful James," wherin is portrayeJ the "Heathen Chinee," now so familiar to us all. If they do not, we see no other consolation at hand for all the evidence of the present work is against his ability to maintain the position he has heretofore acquiied.

It was nearlv a hundred years a^o When he sailed away from her arms—poor wenth—

With the Admiral Rochambeau."

Now the word "wench," which is evidently used here solely for the sake of the rhyme, is commonly applied only to colored women in the United States. It is also defined by Webster as "a low, vicious, coarse young woman," and tii£ old meaning, which was simply a girl or maiden, is stated to be obsolete. It is never used at the present day in a favorable sense except when applied to a ne gress. We can hardly suppose that our French lover was enamored of a black woman, and we do not think that Mr. Harte intends to have us understand that frhe was "low, vicious or coarse," yet he designates herb a word which compels us to choose between these two meanings. Its use as a poetic archaism is not defensible, for the vulgar sense of the word has become so fixed as to render it absolutely antagonistic to the expression of an attractive idea.

We believe that nearly and perhaps quite all the con'tents in the present volume have previously appeared in print. "TheStuge Driver's Story" of the descent of the Geiger Grade is earnestly aud dramatically told. The picture of the flying coach, at first on three wheels, then ou two, and finally on one, as it whirls down the steep incline, the horses tearing madly ou before it, is drawn with a powerful hand. "The Hawk's Nest" is in a similar vein, but more sketchy every reader would not catch the meaning at once. These poems, and one«-or two others in the book, are very creditable to Mr. Harte but throughout the majority of them the carelessness of the work is evident and in many cases wholly inexcusable.

trumpet blare,

And the wandering night winds seemed to bea: The sound of a far tattooing.

Now this might very well have hap-

in Polynesis, but surely not in forth America. A refereuce to the dictionary will show Mr. Harte that the noun "tattooing," which if derived from the verb "to tattoo," means the process of coloring the flesh by pricking in dyestuffs, after the custom of the South Sea Islanders. The meaning which he attached to it was doubtless that of the noun "tatoo," "a beat of drum at night," which has no corresponding verb. "This mistake reminds us of the use of the word "stale" as an intransitive verb in the last number of the IfeAfmintrter

view.

Remarkable Flight of Carrier Pigeons. We noticed a short time ago the wonderful flight of the ourrier pigeon Tempest. We have now to record the still more extraordinary time of two other birds sent home. The following notes were fouud on them on their arrival: "DEAR FATHER—September 15, 1871, lattitude 27 10 north, longitude 79 30 west, 1,004 statute miles from Montclair, N. J.—I will let the male bird Tornado go with tliis note at exactly 9 A. M., New York time. I let the bird Tempest goon tiie !0th. She rose up about five hundred rds high, atid then made one tremendous plunge to the north, and was out of sight about as quick as a flash ot lightning. HARRY C. SLEEKER. "DEAR FATHER—September 21,1871, latitude 26 north, longitude 93 5 west, 1,596 statute miles from Montclair, N. J•—I will let the old bird Typhoon go with this note at exactly 8 o'clock A. M., New York time. He is a powerful bird, but he has a fearful job on hand. He must go through it or. perish. All well. HARRY C. BI,EKKKR."

The bird Tornado arrived at Montclair the same day at seven ininu'os past 2 o'clock P. U., making over 196 miles an boar. Typhoon arrived thewmv lay at

fifty-four minutes past 3 o'clock P. M., and fell dead on his arrival, but he brought the note in the unprecedented time of 202 miles an hour.

A

CASE

S

of remarkable longevity has

just been developed in Germany, in the case of one Jacqftes Bernardoux, who died recently in a small village in the Hartz Mountains, aged 104 years. This man's life was always exemplary. He had never been drunk but once in his life. Up to the last moment he retained all his faculties. Upon the morning of his death he attended mass at a church situated about four miles from his dvvel ling. He received communion, aud on leaving church he remarked to his great grandson that bis end was approaching. That night he was seized with an attack of asphyxia, and died without paiu.

It is said that if a puff of air were to be blown into a vein of an animal, death would instantaneously follow, because circulation would be stopped. The blood makes the eutire circuit of the human body every seven minutes, and whenever this circulation is impeded or any of its channels are clogged by impurities which oufjht to be carried off, disease follows fever oi a disorder of liver or kidneys, or scrofula, or dyspepsia. To get at and remove the source of the diffi culty, use the old and infallible blood purifier, DR. WALKER'S VINEGAR BITTEKS. nov6dw4w

There, instead of the express

ion, "the world grows stale," we have "the world stales." Now the instructive verb "to stale" means something that ladies and geutlemen are notiu the habit of conversing about,' as well as something which it would be exceedingty difficult for the world to do, and every reader who will look it out in Webster will appreciate the funny character of the mistake.

It is apparent that the true expression of Bret Harte's talent is in prose. "The Luck of Roaring Camp" is sui generis in American literature. His fortune and fame are secure if he cau write other stories characterized by the same high qualities. He should direct his energies to that end rather than to the composition of such careless verse as this volume for the most part contains.—N. Y. Sun.

Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are Incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in theii administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This has at last been done.

The his ton' of Helininthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ol the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his timt had invested the nature of chest diseases thaL any other physician who ever lived. Yet witl all his skill in detecting the nature and form oJ the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but fen words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knowtthe value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of tin many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilder'* Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation He has no fear in the presence oi croup, no misgivings at the advance of bron chitis he grapples wtth consumption, and sub dues every cough, cold, orcntarrh. Hence every lainily should always have this invaluabl medicine at hand.

Indigestion,

'Which makes sleep a pain, and turnB its balm to wormwood, is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, anc incompatible symptoms. They contradict till the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is s.i.1 ued in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to oe met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each Individ ual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscien tious physician pursues unceasingly, and nevei can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edtcard Witder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distil led whisky, maket this object attainable alike to all. They are .specific—the disease specifying the remedy, noi the remedy the disease. They are a com bin a tion of substances which meet the speciality the disorder by a corresponding speciality cure. They should be kept in every well-regu lated family they are indispensable to health

Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in oui own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some timt and in some shape are we made to feel the sick pning influence of miasm. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set npart for patients suffering with diseases of the skin, and every patient, old or young, is taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had- charge of tbe skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whetherof rheumatic orscrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash, roseash, pimples, scrofula, ulcers, old sores, falling of the hair, etc. In al 1 they did good, in most they effected a cure. But it has remained for JBdtcard Wilder's Sarsaparilla and JMeuh to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine.
